I have a 59 Dodge with power steering. It is leaking like a sieve. I'm pretty sure its coming from the pitman arm shaft seal. When I got the car, it came with a new pitman arm shaft seal and a worm gear seal. I'd like to replace them both but I could use an exploded view from a manual or a maybe a good description.

Thanks,
Bob

Get the pitman arm off of course, then you will see a snap ring holding the seal in, it is a pita the dig the old seal out, on my Coronet it was rusted in pretty good.

Make sure you mark the pitman arm to go back on in the same location on the splines.
Of course , there mas be only one way it will go back on, in that case you are covered.

Trick is to get the new seal over the spline without damaging it.
I always used a short, thin strip of bevarage can aluminum wrapped around
the spline secured with a bit if tape as a protection for the new seal,
and lube it with a bit of oil to aid installation.

I've got it all apart but the old seal doesn't want to come out. Should I just keep digging at it or is there a better way to remove it.

Thanks

rockauto.com has them. I took my steering column to a local machine shop to get them to dig out the old seal.

I had to replace the pitman shaft seal while on the road in our '58 Dodge. Mopar To Ya [Steve] ordered one at his local Napa store, and we had it when we arrived in Iowa. After removing the pitman arm, remove the snap ring that retains the seal. My method of getting the seal out is to fill the power steering reservoir, and with the car up on stands, place a good sized oil drain pan beneath and start the car. Turn the steering wheel all the way to its stops, and the resulting high pressure will force the seal out.

When installing the new seal, simply find a short piece of pipe approximately the same diameter as the seal, and use this to evenly push the new seal up into place.

I'm debating whether or not to have my steering gear rebuilt. It leaks slightly at the pitman arm output location, but it sounds like the ordeal of replacing the output shaft seal might be as much work as removing the whole gear and sending it in for repair (I ordered a seal from Rock Auto, but haven't got it yet). What makes the seal so difficult to remove after it's been in place for a long time? Is it just an o-ring or some specially formed seal? I DO know that getting the steering gear out of the car is no walk in the park....getting the steering column moved properly is complcated, but having a "new" gear with tighter parts would be nice. Advice?

Sometimes they got glued in, that's what was going on in the one I encountered. A local machine shop can clean up the machined surfaces and install a proper seal. No need to rebuild what doesn't need rebuilding. You're going to have to pull the whole column to do this job right, Sorry.

The box in my '58 Fireflite is leaking quite badly. Looks like I am going to attempt to replace the pitman arm seal as well. I'll try the high pressure turns first to see if that'll work to remove the old one. Thanks for the suggestion John!

I wouldn't touch it if does not leak. After being on FL net since 1999 or 98, I can say many problems start when people mess with things because they assume, if its old its gotta be bad.
Chances are, that seal will outlive you and your children. After 30+ years, driving almost daily in basically untouched cars, I never experienced any pitman seal leaks. Not a drop. Almost 600 000 KM/62 years on one untouched unit.
Bad panel fitment and rust gave these cars a bad reputation, but technically they are the highest quality and most bulletproof cars ever build.
For instance, the rubber on my 2014 Citroen already stats to fall appart. "Environment friendly" produced materials? The window seals, wires, etc on my 1960 Fury still look like new. Quality materials.

10 yo thread btw.

Hey Bob. Hope you got that seal replaced.

Too bad you didn't get a response with a diagram back then.

Better late than never (??!!) 10 years and 6 days later, *might* be a bit late, but:

I replaced the pitman shaft seal today and using the high pressure turns to pop the seal out worked great for me. Thanks again John! I didn't have a tool to install the new seal, and my usual deep socket wouldn't work in this case because the dimensions are pretty tight. But I happened to have an old fence post lying around that had the perfect 1.66 OD to work as a tool (1.7" is the maximum). So I cut off a piece with 5.5" length, which allows it to hang below the frame and gives you plenty of space to hit it comfortably. I pre-oiled the seal before I pushed it up into place. My only fear is that perhaps I may have hit the seal too hard, but if you are gentle with it, you should be OK. At least mine doesn't seem to leak now with the car still up on jack stands.

The new snap ring that comes with the kit doesn't work here. The inner dimension hits the shaft and doesn't allow you to get it on. By the time you clearance the snap ring enough, I doubt it would function anymore to be able to install it. So I just re-used the original one. The original is kind-of a pain to remove because of how the holes sink into the groove, but at least it works. The dust seal to the right goes on after the snap ring. Make sure you do it in the right order, as it goes on pretty tight and I doubt you could pull it back off without destroying it. Torque the pitman nut to air gun T-I-T-E after you are done.
