Expert Posts: 4533 Location: Ripon, WI | My 318 is going to get some extra charge soon. This is what my setup is going to be: Stock 46,000 mile 318 block with stock pistons. Heads getting redone with stainless valves, slightly larger than stock. Will be ordering a 264 grind cam from Gary Pavlovich. Stock dual quad intake. Will be running 2 Edelbrock performers Has an MSD 6AL box. Stock exhaust manifolds with custom dual exhaust What do you think guys? I think it will improve it a little bit!

Expert Posts: 4533 Location: Ripon, WI | He told me the cam to go with. I should see the heads in the next couple of weeks. Hope they turn out well. I saw them a week or so ago, and I couldn't believe it was the same heads! They came off a junk motor that was rusted tight. They tumbled them and man did they turn out nice!

Expert Posts: 2480 Location: Dalveen, Queensland, Australia | We've got plans for a 318 Poly as well... This car... http://www.austarmetro.com.au/~raybell/dodgebradsf3q1204.jpg ...is going road racing! Under the Historic touring car rules in Australia, we're better off keeping the Poly it was born with, but we'll be fitting a 4-speed A833 (anyone got a bellhousing?) and doing a lot of things to make the engine and suspension work better. Oh, yeah, and the brakes... let's not forget the brakes! My nephew has taken on this project, he's a good hard working kid and loves his Mopars... he has five or six Valiants including a really original very early AP5... that car was going to get the racing mods had we not fount the Phoenix. Yeah, that's what the Polara was sold as in Australia... the Phoenix. Well, all the advice that's available will be well received, though we will probably source most of the bits locally. But information from kind Americans will always be welcome. One thing we'd like to know is whether or not there are any significant differences in the 318 Polys sold in trucks as compared to car engines. Did they, for instance, have thicker cylinder walls (as we're told the 225 truck engines had), better cranks or rods? I know they had different ports. This project has a timetable of about a year to prepare the car, then young Ben intends burning a lot of rubber as he races among things like Minis, old Holdens, Jaguars etc. By the way, we're restricted under the rules to 6" rims and radial ply road tyres, so getting it sideways in the turns should be no trouble at all... as long as he can get by down the straights and hold them under brakes, they'll never pass him! Expert 5K+ Posts: 8953 Location: WHEELING,WV.>>>HOME OF WWVA | RAY------from the info i have on the two(car and truck) engines-318-poly they are pretty much the same engine inside and out------sharing the same casting numbers and internals such as crank-rods-pistons------heads and so on------there are subtle differences like the dist. but i think that is due to the advance curve and power range------as for cylinder thickness they can be bored .90 + with vurtually no problems but testing the block first for imperfections make sense------the pistons may have a subtle difference-i'm trying to track them down now-as for real differences in them i believe it goes back to the power range thing------if i have missed something-i'm sure someone will jump in and correct me-----------------------later

Expert Posts: 2480 Location: Dalveen, Queensland, Australia | Thanks for that... I know the manifolds are different, hence my comment about the ports. But it's the bottom end that's important, we're looking to ensure the greatest reliability we can consistent with pumping out better than 450bhp and turning the car in both directions on road race courses. Let me know if you find out any more... and thanks again.

Expert 5K+ Posts: 8953 Location: WHEELING,WV.>>>HOME OF WWVA | if you want to pump out that kind of hp. from a poly 318-there's a great guy in california can point you in the right direction if you would like------he can tell you the does and don'ts and what to expect during the process------his email is GLPAVLOVICH@COX.NET------he's has had published articles on a poly 318 stroker and is slipping it into a 56 savoy he's owned since the late sixties------he should also be able to put you in touch with all parts you during the build------he even reproduces an aluminum finned valve cover for the poly 318------thought you might get a kick out of my 318 with a set of original EDELBROCK finned covers---------------------later Edited by 60 dart 2004-12-29 4:03 PM (finnedalum.coverswithPCVandoilbreather.jpg) (Scan0015.gif) (Scan0016.gif) Attachments ---------------- finnedalum.coverswithPCVandoilbreather.jpg (75KB - 167 downloads) Scan0015.gif (81KB - 164 downloads) Scan0016.gif (86KB - 176 downloads)

Expert Posts: 2480 Location: Dalveen, Queensland, Australia | Isn't he the Salt Lake Record man? I seem to recall the name from the distant past... I'll get in touch with him and see what he has to say. We're not allowed to stroke, of course, but with a fairly hefty bore increase and a bit of work on the flowbench, the right cam and a lot of hours on the dyno to get carburetion right (my brother owns a chassis dyno, that's a help!), I think Ben will get some serious grunt. With only 6" rims allowed, and only road radial tyres, it will scramble to effectively put that on the bitumen out of the slower corners, but it should hit its straps when it gets to the straights. You might notice we're also mighty concerned about brakes...

Expert Posts: 2480 Location: Dalveen, Queensland, Australia | Latest plans for induction are to make up separate manifold runners and fit eight single choke Strombergs off early model Holdens... Ben reckons he will have his hands full getting them synchronised, but they can be fitted with an adjustable mainjet and he's very familiar with them, so he's confident he can make it all work.

Veteran Posts: 228 Location: fulshear texas | instead of the old strombergs why not do the sprint car thing and run a hilborn injector setup? you won't have float bowl problems in the turns. sure would look cool.

Expert Posts: 2480 Location: Dalveen, Queensland, Australia | It's not legal for the class... has to be carburettors of a type available at the time. But thanks for the thought...
