Expert Posts: 3490 Location: Montreal, Canada | It was a beautiful day for a road trip to a local salvage yard today, together with another forum member (Crusader). Overall a very neat yard, well organized and maintained. Lots of excellent parts cars. Here are some samples of what we found: The row of finned Chryco cars: This is what's left of a 1957 Chrysler airport limo: And this 1958 Dodge Regent sport coupe really caught my eye... It is complete, but partly dismantled, and the motor runs. It comes with a lot of extra parts. It was a well-optioned car, and an original red and white one: rear antennas, padded dash, radio, sportone, solex glass... Could make a really nice project:

Hmmm! Pretty good parts! Yes, it's a radio-delete plate. Is this rare for a '57 Chrysler? I might go back and get a couple of parts out before the winter. There were at least two of those sought-after 1958 Plymouth trunk handles too.

Neil, where did you get that information? I ask because I doubt it. Montreal being the largest city in Canada and one of the largest in north America in the 1950s, it had as many AM stations as anyone would ever want... In fact, one of the world's oldest radio stations was from Montreal: http://factoidz.com/the-closing-of-the-oldest-radio-station-in-the-... Same goes for Toronto and for the northern USA (I mean, Chicago, Detroit, Buffalo, Cleveland, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, etc...). All those northern cities certainly had lots of stations to offer. I think the difference was more rural areas/urban areas.. but not as much north/south. Now, maybe people were a bit more frugal than in the southern USA, that's possible though, but even that is probably more a rural area/urban area difference. Just sayin', eh!

I grew up in southern Michigan, and we could listen to CHUM out of Toronto, and the station known as 'motor city rock' CKLW actually broadcast 50,000 watts from over the border in Windsor, Ontario. ---John Just sayin', eh! :)

And I might add too that the junk yards and 1950's cars I know around here don't show this general radio-delete trend at all. On the contrary, I'd say the ratio is the majority of cars had a radio in them. For example, in the yard pictured above, only two FL cars didn't have a radio: the 1957 Chrysler airport limo and the '57 gold and white Dodge Mayfair. Edited by soiouz 2010-10-22 12:35 PM

Elite Veteran Posts: 726 Location: Some Island called Prince Edward | I grew up in London Ontario and there was 3 AM stations dating back to the early 1950's. We also had an FM station in the 60's. London was kind of leading edge. We were also the first city in the world with Cable TV.

Expert Posts: 3490 Location: Montreal, Canada | Went back to this yard last Tuesday to pick up some parts for my car, and quite a few FL cars have been added to it, including an incredibly solid 1958 Imperial (look at the floor pics I took!!), and a very restorable and complete 1960 Desoto. The 1960 Chrysler is not a weird truck conversion, the pickup cab is only stacked there, the car is a 4 door sedan and in good shape underneath it. (Sorry about the quality of the pics, only had my cellphone) Edited by soiouz 2013-08-30 7:45 AM

When he has time off from the regular modern car yard activities, he takes each one of them, lifts them up from the ground, brings them to his main garage, removes critters, junk and weed out of them, oils the underside, brings them back in the yard, and then parks them on iron sheets, lifted high from the ground, so they don't rot. I don't know many other salvage yards that takes that much care to preserve old iron (except for Big M of course!!). I say hats off for these guys that really help a lot for the hobby! Expert Posts: 3490 Location: Montreal, Canada | There were also other FL cars (and hundreds more non-FL 1950's cars) that I did not take pictures of, including a very complete and probably restorable 1961 Plymouth Fury 4 door hardtop. It was in another section of the yard that I saw just as I was driving away.
