I am talking about the inserts shown below.

Were they originally mounted with clips? Or glue?

How about the restoration / reproduction parts, are they mounted differently than the originals? I know there was even an aftermarket vendor making them from.. vinyl?

One last question, were the mouldings that border these inserts any different than the mouldings for cars that had painted Sportone?

Thanks!

Wow, yet another yellow 58 Belvedere ! Is this your car and is it also a 2dr ? Please post another pic.

The 58 sportone inserts just slipped in between the upper and lower mouldings on the fenders and doors. The mouldings are the same as for a painted insert. On the quarters the sportone was folded under in the rear and retained by clips that inserted thru three holes drilled in the quarter panel. I'm doing this based on memory, so I may not be totally accurate about the quarter panel insert.

57Burb, A memeber right here on this site has repopped the inserts in Gold as well as silver in the EXACT thickness, color, PATTERN, and mounting as OEM...Members name is "Wayne" out of Coatsville PA...The "Vinyl" inserts you mentioned are probably the ones made from Mylar like is on my own car....There was no difference as far as I know in the actual Sportone trim between painted and insert...

I like 'em, some folks don't....I NEVER have to worry bout polishing that OLD aluminum OR buying the new REPOP inserts.

However, most here seem to be of the "purist" solution..I don't like the Originals as I'd think they'd tend to "Wear" on your paint as the Sportone trim is the only thing holding them on the car down the sides. They DO mount with little nuts in the rear at the fins, but that's as far as I know they have and "mounts"......

Anther little trick to keep them from chafing the paint is to run a small bead of silicone (thin) over the top edge under the wide strip of trim. This will keep dirt from getting trapped as well.

Exactly Donnie, I did that very same thing and it works well. I have purchased the mylar replacement set for my four door which were incredible.  Jim Rawa does great work!  However,  I chose to re-anodize a set of original inserts which turned out great.  You can't beat original if you can get them to look like you want them too!

Original vs. mylar pattern:

Sorry, missed your post.  I did the restoration and a local commerical anodizer comepleted the stripping and anodizing.  I think for all the work they charged me around $300.
