Extreme Veteran Posts: 363 | The cast iron torqueflite in my '58 300D likes to shift by itself into reverse these days when sitting idling in neutral which can get kind of scary when you're OUTSIDE the car ! I'm guessing it needs a cable adjustment? It is a later '61 trans in the car with the wheel aduster on the trans end. The other interesting thing it does, is it will NOT go back diectly into neutral from reverse (stays in reverse when you hit the neutral button), you have to go from reverse to drive and then into neutral....I hope I'm making sense here. All other gears engage and disengage fine. Anyway I'm hoping it's just an adjustment rather than a problem with using the later trans/cable on the earlier '57-8 pushbutton unit. Anybody else out there have or had a possessed trans.........

Elite Veteran Posts: 1153 Location: D-70199 Heslach | I want to adjust my cable and found this thread. Because my pushbutton interprets my gear selection by itself. So I read the master repair very attentive, but they just wrote a few words for the adjustment. Is it really so simple?? Expert Posts: 2289 Location: Eastern Iowa | You will find the adjustment procedure for the later model T/F's w/the adjustment wheel in the 60-64 FSM's I believe the clip you posted is for an earlier trans w/o the adjuster wheel. And yes, the adjustment procedure w/the wheel type really is that simple. Sounds like you need to start from scratch starting with throttle and accelerator linkage adjustments as well. Why was the trans swapped out for a later model? Because of this, you may have some wrong parts/cable/linkage that may be part of the issues you ae having as well. What was the source of the cable you are using? May be too long, too short??

Elite Veteran Posts: 1153 Location: D-70199 Heslach | Thanks Dave for the answer. Yes my trans don't have such a adjustment wheel. The trans was rebuild by an order of previous owner. I bought the car as a broken restoration and all the parts I have are from the previous owner, no idea if the parts was on car when its new.

But I have seen a few crescents that did not centered the ball in all positions. In that situation one must make a compromise. 57chizler - 2017-03-31 11:28 PM wizard - 2017-03-30 9:49 AM When in doubt, pull the pan and check that the ball goes in the detents for every gear.
