I had to replace my 59 year old stoplight switch today on my '59 Firesweep. I guess I got pretty good life out of the original and was able to clean up the master cylinder a little while I was at it. I did consider converting to a mechanical switch by the brake pedal but figured if I could get another 59 years out of a hydraulic unit for under 15 bucks, it's worth the chance.

In preparation for the National DeSoto Club annual convention, I thought I would spend some time giving the old girl a once over before driving 6 hours from Branson, MO to Hutchinson, KS. Chassis lube, oil and filter change, tire rotation, inspection of all the joints and rotational components, like steering linkages, ball joints, U-Joints, parking brake, etc. Cosmetically it's as good as she'll get but might need a clean-up when I get to Hutchinson. The convention is July 16th to the 21st and hope to see many of you there.

Congratulations, it's a great feeling when you finally get the motor back in and hooked up. I'm on the opposite side of the spectrum. My motor came out today. I had to tear it apart to finally get it to turn all 360 degrees. A couple of valves were stuck and 2 bores were pretty nasty with crud.

Thanks Nathan,
It's been quite the arduous process. Started out as a quick fix of a cracked block. Turned out to be a 413, rebuilt trans and disk brake conversion.

Finally installed the handbrake warning buzzer. Works perfectly when you push any button with ignition on, thanks to Wizards suggestion, using a NC-relay. Only problem, as I didn't want to cut the OE wiring or soldering the ignition switch, was getting Ign1 current behind the dash (already had a loop/switch behind the dash for the solenoid safety ground switch). So I routed it back to the dash from the engine bay.

Actually it worked even better than Wiz said, as there is no need for a 2nd handbrake ground switch when you want a warning light with ignition on and no button pressed. Just replaced the regular bulb with a bright red LED and that solved that little problem.

Now I only need to install another relay that cuts out the stereo, when I push a button when the engine is running, so I actually hear the warning buzzer

Suprisingly the untouched OE wiring fed for the OE handbrake warning light wasn't supplying 12V and didn't work for the relay!

That's nice to "hear" Sid, great that it worked even better than I thought.

Yes, the stereo needs to be at least muted for to hear the buzzer.

Technically I did this on Monday. I volunteered a little time at the DFW national cemetery, and then drove around that afternoon looking for spots to take pictures with my Chrysler. Not interested in discussing politics, but I'm grateful to live in a country worth dying for and having the freedom to roll around in an old car! I found a great MCM neighborhood and even found a home with a flag out on Memorial Day. Was worth getting a picture. (yes Nathan I took the wires back off )

Of course I wired everything with old used OE cables Below is the LED type I used. They fit perfectly behind the OE lense.
I didn't want to modifie the OE socket. so I used a 3/4" sheet metal plug instead with a 10mm hole drilled so these snapped right into place.

The only thing, it creates a micro-beep when I switch on the ignition with no button engaged (the time the relay needs to react).
It is barely noticeable and I got used to it.

Check out what I found inside my DeSoto trunk lid. I had no idea mice would like to hide up in there.

I cut it up like this so I could scavenge the sheet metal to use elsewhere. I don't like to pay for new sheet metal while throwing out usable stuff. Doesn't make sense, so I recycle it. I am hoping the bend at the downturn is going to come in handy when I do lower quarter panel repairs......

I had the inside of my hood and trunk lid painted black. I also had to replace the hood pad the original bit the dust. I stated sanding the engine compartment. I had to get more sand to sand blast more of the cancer off the car . I will have a have some photos shared on the forward look face book page . It has been a long journey on this forward look of mine. It also looks to me I won't be driving this car any time soon ,. I also got my front disc brake conversion kit . I also got to get brand new tires . I will not drive this car with tires that are 16 years old on it I am not taking any chances for a blow out and a fender bender.

On this Thanksgiving day I prepared my '59 Firesweep for its annual winter nap. Fired it up and ran it up to operating temperature, went through the gears several times (would have driven it but the weather was, and still is, nasty), changed the oil and filter, aired up the tires to 45 psi, put a fresh coat of wax on it, and put it under cover. Then I put up my DeSoto Christmas Tree in my office.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Beautiful day in the Ozarks today and had to get the Big D out. Also bought a Vintage travel trailer that I thought would look neat behind the DeSoto. Yeah I'd like to pull it with the DeSoto but don't have a hitch so I'll have to resort to the RAM 3500. I actually think the trailer would look really good behind a Turquoise and white '55 Chevy Nomad.

Got a chance to test the brakes again after replacing the grabbing linings a few months ago. PERFECT! Looking forward to the DeSoto National Convention in Wisconsin this year.

Installed two NOS taillight side spears on my 56 Dodge Custom Royal and finally installed the two rear license plate lens that I waited 2 (3?) years to get from George Laurie. Easier than I thought that it would be.

Yesterday I was digging under the carpet of my 1960 Chrysler Town & Country wagon and found several strange things as well as the build sheet. Today I dug into the crack of the front seat because I found some stuff falling out of the torn carpet on the back of the seat. The car had been sitting since 1978. It was sold new in Los Angeles and the ended up in Indiana in 1973 or before. The second owner had it until 4 or 5 years ago but had parked it in 1978. All the coins are earlier than 1978 as well as the receipts. The lug wrench was an odd deal. I could feel it in there but didn't know what it was, It was in there at an angle stuck up into the backrest. Doesn't look like it had ever been used. I think my car came with Captive Air tires originally so no jack or lug wrench would have been included. The car is coded 99 for tires. I was hoping to find the special order form. Need to pull the front seat to check under the front carpet.

The last picture is the stuff from under the rear carpet.

I used some covid-19 social distancing time to pretty-up the trunk of my '57 Chrysler. I covered some PVC sheet plastic with the same materials used in the interior. The lion emblem is the original hood ornament.

Did you modify the emblem to put black around the outsides? All the emblems I have seen were silver or white in that region.

Yeah. It was silver, I think. Whatever it was had almost completely flaked off, so I sanded off what little was remaining and shot it black, then flipped it over and polished the face. voila

I installed an alternator on the 60 Saratoga. I bought an adapter mount from a local auto electric shop, had an old MoPar Alternator given to me by Islander62, and had the shop rebuild it, and they also added a voltage regulator mounted onto it which makes it a one wire job. Now I have constant voltage 14.4 when driving and 14.2 - 14.3 at idle with no load. With the A/C it reads 13.6-13.8 at idle and it comes back up. The alternator is a model 7007 60 amp amp unit which was used from 61 through 69 on various models. Higher amp units will likely kill the amp gauge. I still have the original regulator mounted on the driver's side, and simply had to move the red wire (coming from the alternator) going into the regulator from the ARM terminal to the BAT terminal to make the original Amp gauge work and I also have a small Voltmeter plugged into the cig. lighter to monitor actual voltage. Wish I had done this years ago.

Good job, nice engine bay.

Running it with the alternator now for over a week, and got the battery fully charged.... now the voltage at idle is even better.
It sits at 14.4 normally at idle/ no load, and with A/C on, or heater and lights on, sits 1t 14.1 at idle. At speed it relaxes itself at 14.5 V.

September 11, 2020------The Ozark Trail Chapter of the Studebaker/Packard Club sponsored their 25th Annual Orphan Car Show in Branson, MO with the recognition of the tragedy of 9-11-2001.

The event is open to any "orphan" car or truck 1985 or older. As expected the majority of the cars were Studebakers but there were a few others with the most notable being two 1930 Franklins that have air cooled engines. The rain held off just long enough for a full day of showtime and some drive-time in the beautiful Ozarks of southwest Missouri.

Beside my DeSoto, the only other MoPar was a 1973 Plymouth Satellite out of a total of 59 cars.

We took part in a momentous motoring event earlier today. Here in Adelaide, South Australia, was held the 40th anniversary of the Bay to Birdwood car run. With some 1200+ cars and bikes involved, we travelled a distance of 72km in perfect weather, starting at 7:30 near West Beach and Glenelg and reaching our destination at our National Motoring Museum up in the hills at Birdwood, unfortunately currently closed (thanks Covid).
We travelled in our 59 Custom Royal 4door, Australian delivered. Other F/L vehicles we saw included a 58 Plymouth, 59 Plymouth, 57 Custom Royal and a pair of 59 Imperials. We also have some local home grown F/L vehicles, built by Chrysler Australia from 1958 to 1963, called Chrysler Royal. They took styling cues from the 57, 58 & 59 vehicles and added them to a 55 Dodge body essentially. I counted approximately 6 of these.

I had the pleasure of replacing my fuel pump today on my ‘59 Firesweep. Fortunately the the engine died just after I got it out of the garage which brings up an inquiry. Would it be wise to put an electric fuel pump on as a booster or would it be more hassle than what it’s worth? If anyone has had a similar experience and put an electric pump on, was it worth the hassle? The mechanical one I replaced was on the car when I got it about 6 years ago and the previous owner does not recall if the original had ever been replaced. So my guess is they can last a long time or do they?

Your suggestions and comments are appreciated.

Hey Viper Guy,

this is only my opinion,
If you replace with factory quality mechanical fuel pump I would just replace it
they last a long time and if you have filter before the pump might be a good idea is the tank is suspect

I have both in my cars but the one thing I will say is If I convert to electric pump I have a spare electric one with me in the boot.

My electric fuel pump is connected with straight ignition but I believe they are supposed to be wired in with oil pressure switch
so if the car stalls or you have a crash it doesn't keep pumping fuel.
You turn on ignition they prime then stop because of no oil pressure.

What I do like about the electric fuel pump is, if the car is sitting there for awhile, you are not cranking it over and over to get fuel to bowl
but the opposite of this is, in theory is its better to crank for a while to prime the oil before it fires straight away if sitting for awhile.

soooo after confusing you with this rant. I would go and replace with a good mechanical one, you will probably only do it once - my opinion only of course

I never understood why people chango to electric. I don't think anyone drives an old car as often as I do, almost every day for almost 33 years and the mechanical pump never caused any problems and thats what literally billions of people used back in the day when these cars were regular transportation around the globe, in days before cell phones. I just replaced the aluminum Carter street/strip pump I installed almost 30 years ago, not because it failed, just a precaution I checked the diaphragm and it was still like new, only the rubber that portruded from the housing had cracks.

Thanks for your input guys. I am in total agreement as I replaced mine with a standard mechanical unit and hope it will last a long time. I have no idea how old the pump
was that I replaced but it may have been the original one from the factory since the car has only 24,000 miles on it. I guess time will tell and I'm not arguing with success.

Generally, I prefer mechanical pumps for carbureted OEM style street engines. In my personal experience, electric pumps tend to overwhelm carburetors with excessive pressure, even the dinky ones. And they tend to struggle with volume if you have your foot on the pedal longer than 4-5 seconds. Yes, you can put a pressure regulator inline, and then you can buy one of those big noisy pumps, and then you can add a relay and a rollover safety switch, and then you can run a bunch of new wires... and then, and then, and then...

Just keep it simple. Your original mechanical pump can be rebuilt easily in about an hour with hand tools. It's actually kind of fun. 'Then and Now Automotive' offers rebuild parts that are compatible with modern ethanol blended fuels. https://www.then-now-auto.com/fuel-pumps/ Give them a call and tell them exactly what you have and they will send the right parts.

Yeppy, I'm with you 100%. I did keep my old one I took off and will order the rebuild kit as you suggest. Then I'll have a spare that
hopefully I'll never need.

I got into my trunk and the rust just kept going and going the more I dug into it, so now it is definitely all gone! Swapping in the bentire bottom half of the trucnk and lower part of the trunk seal/rail. Good thing I had picked up a dry parts car because I needed a lot more of it that I thought. Tedious work to separate the trunk pan and quarters from the wheel wells but worth the effort of going slow and carefully.

I used the trim line holes as my cut line and that seems to have worked out really well. Today was the first fit trial. More trimming and matching and hope to have this tacked in by mid-week.

Also ordered new carpet for the 60 Suburban. Excited for that!

Repaired my driver's door power window master switch. Lately the driver's window has been slow going down, and sometimes took a couple of pushes to start it going down. Finally, yesterday it got really slow going down, and then quit, and the switch gave off a little whiff of smoke. OhOh. I removed the switch and carefully un-crimped the back side, and took it apart. The contact points were so dirty and black it's a wonder it worked at all. I cleaned up all the contact points, filed them off, stretched the toggle button springs out slightly, and also cleaned up the toggle buttons which were coated with 60 years of grime. Then put it back together, and crimped the back plate on. Connected it back to the window wiring, tested it and well, let's just say it's as fast as a jack rabbit running from a prairie fire!

Not today, but over the last few days, I've been calling around looking for some parts and trying to figure out how to clear my garage out so I can get the Coronet properly sheltered.

I've also been looking at several different short-height lifts so I can do under-car work for it, and others, more easily.

I have been relooking at the the EZ Car Lift. Only 26" (max) lift - but straight up, no forward/backward throws that some of the small lifts cause.

My hemi heads came in handy for re gluing the linoleum in my bathroom. I brought more up after this picture. I knew it would eventually pay off to save these bad boys for something.

Put new front shocks on the 55 wagon, made a world of difference to handling under braking. Thanks to Powerflite for sending me in the right direction.

Found and greased grease nipples that I had missed last service, on top wishbone arms. Greased the hoist while I was at it, then washed the wagon, drove it around the block to dry it off and put it away.

Cover can go on tomorrow so I don't get it dirty all over again when I wire brush the 38 starter motor parts tomorrow.

I picked up another low mileage 57NE 392 hemi motor. I don't know why they pulled one piston out of it. The bearing surface & wall look fine. Not sure what I am going to put it into yet, but I've found it pays to pick them up when you can get them for a good deal.
