Expert 5K+ Posts: 7211 Location: Victoria, BC, on Vancouver Island, Canada | 1960fury - 2017-08-25 9:31 AM excellent piece, at least it looks like the mopar performace 5 blade fan/clutch (according to them the unit that robs the least amount of hp from an engine) i have been running for 25 years without problems. replaced it with a lighter aluminum version that does not cool as well. The clutch fan is actually a 7-blade unit. The original non-clutch unit is a 6 blade fan. We arrived home from our trip today after 12 days out with the car. That fan worked great, the temp gauge didn't come near the hot mark at all, even when stuck in some heavy traffic hardly moving. In the past the gauge would creep right up near the hot line in a situation like that during hot weather. Edited by imopar380 2017-08-26 7:43 PM

I started to work on the left side exhaust on my New Yorker today, but a friend of mine brought by an 8 3/4 that he wanted me to cut & weld to A-body specs. That ate up the majority of my day so I didn't get much else done. Oh well, there's always tomorrow right?

Exner Expert 10K+ Posts: 10182 Location: Lower Mainland BC | Today was busy. I started off by shampooing my 56 Dodge's rear seat bottom: http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=65218&... While that was drying, I moved into the garage and played with the brake adjustment on my D500 Center-plane 12" x 2.5" brakes (left front - it had locked on a few weeks ago backing the car out of the garage): http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=68135&... And then while I still had the wheel off, I finally installed the custom 0 gauge solenoid to starter cable that I had made months ago. http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=66809&... And while I was under there, I took a photo of the throttle pedal lever boot that I made and installed months ago: http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=66984&... And finally before I put the left wheel back on, I wire-brushed the upper and lower suspension control arms and painted them (heavily) with a cheap hog's hair brush and Tremclad (think Rustoleum) semi-gloss black rust paint. I will have to do the other (right) side when I lubricate those center-plane brake shoes at some point in the near future. I had to avoid the urge to paint the anti-roll bar black while I was there - mostly because I don't know what the correct colour is/was (black? silver?). Same with the bumper brackets (I did paint the frame rails while I was there). Then I started the car after weeks of not being started and let it run up to a good temperature (monitored the generator output on fast idle and it was something like 13.9V). Then I cleaned up outside, came in, washed up and cracked a beer.

Expert Posts: 3967 Location: DFW, TX | Please add some heat shrink to that joint where the cable meets the lug at the starter. Stranded cable has a tendency to pull loose from lugs over time, especially welding wire. Some good shrink wrap with the adhesive inside will keep that connection tight forever.

I got reminded just how freakin' MASSIVE a 392 and tranny is. Sheesh! They are HUGE! And when you start pulling them apart, they get even bigger! But they can be fun too. I used some chain, eye bolts, an engine leveler, and a 2x4 to make this front-clip arrangement. It allowed me to use an electric winch to lift it in the air to keep it from taking up so much space. I had it high enough that we could walk under it. The clip could be attached to an engine hoist to move it around. Worked well for me. Exner Expert 10K+ Posts: 10182 Location: Lower Mainland BC | Not as exciting as a front clip hoist but I worked hard on getting my two piece Stock Interiors/ACC 1956 "Dodge Desoto" carpet set (which turned out to be for a 55/56 Desoto Fireflite 4 dr sedan) into its final positions and then starting the trimming (because the Desoto is so much wider) and the cutting of holes for the front seat mount and the new shoulder belt outboard bottom mount and the seat belt receiver. I struggled to get things symmetrical but eventually realized that there were too many hard points, i.e. the steering column hole, the gas pedal hole that were set by ACC (even after they redid the front piece) and subsequently the headlight high beam switch and the windshield washer pump pin, that symmetrical was not going to happen. Won't really be an issue because the seat will hide the things that aren't symmetrical anyway. I used an awl to line up the sill plate in its proper position (using the awl through the screw holes, into the holes in the rocker panel) and then I market the inner edge of the sill plate with masking tape. I ended up trimming about 1.5" off the front of the rear section in the right front passenger door area and a bit more in the rear of the rear section by the right rear passenger door area. I am targeting to have about 1" of carpet (with no padding) under the inner edge of the sill cover. I still have to trim the outer edges of the front carpet piece. Made good progress today - once I got over the symmetrical thing. So I was quite happy with the day (which also included rough fitting the carbon fibre version of my cold air scoop). Hey, soon I might have a real front seat and I can retire the milk crate and foam pad and go for a real drive! Expert Posts: 3967 Location: DFW, TX | I replaced the 3" rear lowering blocks with 2" ones. After driving it, the stock springs were sagging to the point it was getting a little too low in the rear. The last straw was when the driveshaft rubbed. Eventually I'll put some shorter and stiffer leaf springs on it to get rid of the blocks altogether. I ran all the wires to get the power windows operational again. Still have to wire in the relays and switches to get it all working. At the same time I installed a small amp and the cables to get an iPod or wireless/Bluetooth device playing through the speakers. Other than that, I just drove it a bit. Man it is sweet. Expert Posts: 2007 Location: Branson, MO | Way overdue, but today I decided to have my front seat cushion re-padded with new foam 'cause I just got tired of the "sugar" foam falling down under the seat. With the car being 59 years old and a wee bit out of warranty, I finally bit the bullet. As much as I wanted to keep the car as factory original as possible, I realize there are such things as limitations and this is one of them. Hopefully I will feel, and actually be, a little taller in the saddle when all is said and done.

Exner Expert 10K+ Posts: 10182 Location: Lower Mainland BC | Technically it was yesterday but I: 1. Finished (mostly) the carpet install in my 56 Dodge 2. Added vinyl and some OE-style trim to the bottom of my painted ABS kick panel (right side so far): 3. Put the front seat back in (been out since late October for the carpet install prep), set up the driver's side three point shoulder belt that I installed and took the car for a spin. Engine smoked Hope it was just the lack of driving (only around the block sitting on a milk crate periodically since November). Fingers crossed it goes away with more driving or I can at least manage it.

Expert Posts: 2007 Location: Branson, MO | Well, I did it again after I said I wouldn't. I went to the Route 66 All MoPar show again held at Presley's Jubilee theater here in Branson. There were 147 MoPars with about 10 being older than 2017 models (being a fit facetious) but you get the point. Sad to say only the "Geritol" generation paid much attention to the older cars. I did get a fairly neat picture of King Kong scaling the building in the background using my right tailfin as a "sight". Extreme Veteran Posts: 407 Location: Hilltown, PA | Well today I got "intimate" with my Desoto for the first time. New LF lower balljoint, new thrust rod bushings, new idler arm bearing kit, new shocks all the way around. And some miscellaneous minor things. Haven't aligned it yet, but I can say it's already so much better/tighter/smoother. And I also want to especially thank Sid - the idler arm bearing kit you sent is AWESOME! Fits perfect, smooth motion, no play - and greasable! I think that the idler arm kit alone made most of the difference in how the steering feels. Once I get the alignment done it should be better than new. So next weekend it's on to plugs, wires, service . . . Getting ready for the drive to Carlisle! Gregg

Expert 5K+ Posts: 7211 Location: Victoria, BC, on Vancouver Island, Canada | Installed a brand new reduction drive aftermarket starter on the 60 Saratoga. The old starter was starting to fail - cranking slow when hot, and other issues. Bought from Quality Power. http://www.qualitypowerauto.com/catalog.php?item=600 I also helped install one of these three weeks ago on Islander_62's 1961 Saratoga. A minor glitch was that the edge of the flange in one spot rubbed against the side of the engine block so it wouldn't seat in the bellhousing properly. It took a few minutes with a file to make it work. It was the same for both cars. Elite Veteran Posts: 667 Location: Frederick, MD | Drove the '55 wagon to Carlisle. Something is not right with it. Feels like an exhaust restriction. But, we got there, had a great day. Headed home, coming down US-15 between Emmitsburg and Thurmont, MD, the throttle return spring snapped. Fortunately, the car is slow enough that it wasn't a huge problem being stuck at WOT. I had to briefly ride the brakes a couple of times to maintain interval with traffic ahead of me going downhill. We hit the flats around Lewistown, north of Frederick and I turned off the ignition and pulled over. We called for a tow. While waiting, a farmer stopped, grabbed a pair of pliers and some wire and we were back in business. Cancelled the tow and drove on home. Stopped at the auto parts just before it closed and bought an assortment of return springs. Rolling the dice and headed back tomorrow.
