Exner Expert 19,174 posts. Neil passed away 18 Sep 2015. You will be missed, Neil! Posts: 19146 Location: bishop, ca | Well, today was a red-letter day for Horrie. Decade(s) ago, read this mini-fix-it article, and realized that the annoying wind-leak-noise, due to the vent window's loose-closure against the vent window frame's rubber surround gasket, was due to usage-warpage of the (-pot metal) lock-lever's pivot post. The air-gap/wind noise is discernible by the front seat passenger (mostly) , when all the windows are 'up', so, the annoyance is seasonally-related. Well, tis the season for windows-up cruising, so decided to follow the directions, and (finally) FIX that wind leak problem. Rather than drill-out the lever-lock, and-install a steel pin into it (as described in the article) , decided, simply, to install a small self-tapping screw into the lever-lock-body (which would provide for simple/easy fine-tuning of the extent of the vent window's closure pressure. And VOILA! After 30+ years of custodianship, H.'s passenger side vent window no longer leaks air! (And, if you look closely, you'll see my earlier effort to shim-shut the vent window (as per the fix-it article) , but, that extra layer [of Gary Goers'] vent window rubber-seal did not eliminate the wind-leak at the vent window. And, BEST of all....this fix can be done with NO other labor operations being required onto the car body! Elite Veteran Posts: 836 Location: Layton, Utah | I got the Newport Wagon out to go into the engine so I can see why it started running a bit rough and smoking a bit after a hard run on her last summer, plus I can reseal it and I may go through the trans at the same time. It still works good after 54 years and 35, 000 miles of pampered driving. Sure is a fun one to put around. Elite Veteran Posts: 836 Location: Layton, Utah | I pulled out the Trans and the engine tonight. Can't wait to pull them apart and check them out. Can you believe the exhaust system is still original and good. Another thing about this car that is unusual, when I had the dash speaker out it looked good so I put it back in, and it sounds just fine. Also the steering wheel has no cracks, but then again it sat in the chicken coop from 1975 til I got it, 35 years later. DeSoto (Chrysler) lives !!! Location: North Australia | Jon, the Imperial engine bay is looking good. I like what you did with the mounting of the alt and AC compressor, similar to what I did on my own Imperial. I am looking forward to seeing your car completed, I have been watching your progress for a long time, and like your style. 60 crossram, in my opinion you should stick with your first plan and freshen the original motor and box. A rocker shaft should be easy enough to find. Have you surveyed the rest of the engine yet? My own 413/TF is a great power-plant and with some work yours will be too. Might not take too much money/time to get it back to top form. Plus, you can say it is the original if someone asks. Bloody nice wagon by the way. Steve. Edited by 60 Imp 2015-03-14 2:37 AM

Elite Veteran Posts: 836 Location: Layton, Utah | Yes, the engine is shot. I have never seen a ring ridge in the cylinders this bad before. There is even a ridge on the cam bearings. And the timing chain was a loosey-goosey. I'm just not prepared to do a complete rebuild on this 361 right now. The car is obviously a low mileage car (original exhaust system, dash speaker still soft and works great, brake pedal has very little wear, drivers door hinge has zero play up and down) so whoever owned it did almost no maintenance on the engine I'm guessing. It came from Colorado and was last licensed in 1977. It would be nice to know the history of her. I'm going to tear down a 383 from a 60 Adventurer that I have been storing for 10+ years. May go this route if it's fairly clean inside or the 69 webbed block 440 pavement pounder. Chrysler lives !!!

I would say you spend some bucks on rebuilding that engine and tune it so it runs better than new but you can still call it the original engine. What ever you do, don't get rid of it.

Elite Veteran Posts: 836 Location: Layton, Utah | 1960fury, The end rocker shaft bolt broke then it put stress on the shaft and broke it. The push rods were in the valley area. Luckily they didn't make it down to the crank/rods. 3 of the lifters came apart also and all their pieces were in the valley area and oil pan. Not sure if the valves are sticky which caused the bolt to break. I'm just going to set that engine aside for now and go another route because it needs everything. But I will keep it with the car for sure. David, that looks like a solid Regent. And it's a Hardtop too. Cool !!!

Elite Veteran Posts: 836 Location: Layton, Utah | We'll, I hope people don't get too upset, but the 61 Wagon is getting the 69 440 and 62 trans. I pulled the great shape original exhaust and hangers to save. And the original engine & trans will be resting in my shed for safe keeping. The 440 is at the machine shop getting a 30 over bore and a head job. It will have a Mopar performance purple shaft 440-6 grind cam and new everything. I will not damage anything on the car that can't be undone and the engine will be painted up to look original. I will even modify a period air cleaner. I just wanted this wagon to have some nuts. I'm building the 62 trans now. So maybe another 2-3 weeks she'll be driving again. Hoping to drive her to Mopars at the Strip next year. Thought about it long and hard and this is the route I chose. She'll be cool and will sound and run like she always wanted to. Chrysler lives !!!

Posts: 19146 Location: bishop, ca | After many years of service, replaced the aftermarket crankshaft idler-pulley ( 3 1/2" diameter; Gates:7803-2083; NAPA: 38038), which has a sealed bearing in it. It had been making a sort of 'chirping' sound, which was the only extraneous noise from under the hood. Direct no-brainer/bolt-on item, but it does require the use of one 1/2" inside-diameter steel washer and a 11/16" box-head wrench. Elite Veteran Posts: 836 Location: Layton, Utah | d500neil. You can just press out the bearing on those pulleys and just buy a sealed bearing for a few bucks, then you can keep the original pulley. Nice looking engine you have there. I am building the 62 aluminum torqueflite this weekend. It's all cleaned, buffed and servo bores polished. Getting a complete reseal, clutches and both bands. After 50 years the material starts coming off. This is a one year trans if you guys don't know. Still has the push button and the rear drum e-brake. And it allows you to bolt it to a later big block. (Different crank flange). I'm kind of surprised no one has ever made a conversion torque converter. That's all you would need to bolt a modern engine to the old cast iron torqueflite. I don't know if you guys are aware of these old transmissions ability to start you engine by coast starting them. They have a front pump and a rear pump. If you coast it down a hill or have someone pull you, your engine will crank over at about 20-25 mph. Try it sometime it's way cool. By the way, the Poly 318 P-600 3X2 intake will work with the later factory air, the compressor, idler, brackets, pullys, alt, all came from a 66 Poly 318 Fury. There was some minor T-stat clearance issue's, but turning around a through bolt solved it. Elite Veteran Posts: 836 Location: Layton, Utah | Got the torqueflite built today other than doing a couple minor tweaks to the valve body. Whoever thought up automatic transmissions was either super smart or he was on acid. So cool how they work. Some of today's new trannys are 5, 6, 7 and 8 speeds, all electronic and solenoid activated. All the seals in this trans were getting hard and a couple of the clutches in the direct drum we're coming apart. The material was just coming off the steels in chunks. After so long they just need refreshing. It's getting both new bands also. Not worth having to go back into it again. Mopar or no car !!! If you don't do it, It don't get done. Regular Posts: 52 Location: Massachusetts | Changed the engine oil and filter today. I have to say getting the cartridge type oil filter back on was a minor chore, trying to get the bolt lined up and threaded in while reaching around the center link, exhaust pipe, and torsion bar. But I endeavored to persevere, and got it on with only minor cursing. The FSM calls for SAE 30, but also says that 20W-50 is OK to use, too. I have a half a drum of Cen-Pe-Co 15W-40 oil left over from my farming days, so I used that. I figure it's an old engine, I'll really only be running it in the warmer months, and hey, I got the oil anyways. Oh, I got my car inspected today, too. Anyways, visited a friend last night, and the car wouldn't start. Tried this and that. Finally took off the air cleaner, it was getting gas. Took off the distributor cap, and the points weren't sparking! Yes! The old 'scratch-the-points-with-an-old-screwdriver' routine! I can't remember the last time I had to do that! Put it back together and she fired right up. Man, I love it... Note to self: Please don't drop the little air cleaner clamp into the running fan blade again... That could have been nasty.

Yes my Powerflite (2 speed automatic transmission) in my Beast ('56 New Yorker) has a rear pump as well. I assume there was no major change (e.g. drop of the rear pump) in the Powerflite until it was phased out.
Happy Motoring!
