I have surfed the net a little and found a couple. I am interested in seeing any old photos of FL cars racing on the dragstrip back in the 50's-60's. If you got any please post them.

The few I saw on-line are for sale at web-sites like Nitro Geezer. Those websites will not let you cut and paste.

I googled 50's drag racing photos and it popped up. There was a 59 or 60 Fury in one of the photos. It is worth looking at the photos though. There are some really cool old photos of drag cars.

Whoa; that's a 57 Coronet, or Royal D500, there; no exhaust deflectors on it, though...

Wonder if it could have been a Super-D.

There is NOTHING "cool" about these pictures. No one is wearing helmets. Just think of the safety !

If kids today can't ride bicycles without helmets for fear of death or mutilation ....

And just in case you are wondering, I ALWAYS wear my helmet when on the computer in case of accidents.

Nerd ?

I don't know about THAT.

Douchebag, maybe ? Afterall, I DO drive a finned Mopar, right ?

I thought nerds were unable to have contact or not repulse the opposite sex ? I must be close, but not quite a nerd.

But I do own some Artcraft birth control glasses and a Jack Nicholson / Easyrider helmet !

Hi Everyone... I've got a real treat for ya here... I'm sure you've all heard of the Ram Chargers... well, living back in North Carolina, I was honored to get to know Mr. Barnes Daniels. He was one of the founding members of the Ram Chargers, and was working at Chrysler as an engineer back when the height the fins were rolling off the production lines.

Here's a shot of one of the Ram Chargers first cars... a 57 Plymouth. Check out what they did under the hood... impressive even by todays standards :-)

September, 1964. Thanks for bringing up this subject! It's great to see the Forward Look represented at the birth of Drag racing!

Bryan

I've got some more shots of Car shows that Barnes attended a couple years ago and some of the cars he brought. I'll post them when I dig them up.

Not to mention the lack of guard rails and the fact that their houses were painted with lead paint and they fried everything in lard.

According to the safety freaks I died in 1961.

Nah; I-spy what appears to be, clearly, a 1964 Chrysler emblem on the fender, and, a relatively flat (wrap-around,
if you like) tail light bezel on that wagon.

They can't ALL be 1961 PLY wagons, Adriana!

Aren't those Weber side-draft carbs?

************************************

I rode my Stingray all over within a 90 mile radius of home for years. Never had a helmet.

I lived in lead painted houses all my life and still seem to be functioning.

I have climbed trees, played with electricity, built campfires, .... heck, I have even walked on top of guardrails ! All without a helmet. No Ridilin or sedation of any kind ! We took guns to school - never even unloaded them - and no one got shot. A friend and I ran into a pedophile one time, but had the common sense to beat feet and alert some adults. Today, we'd "need" therapy and perhaps medication to cope with the trauma (not to mention a helmet!).

How DID we survive ?

Very well, thank you !

Got an answer on those carbs...

Those are Carter YH carburetors. Often called a YF, which is incorrect. The YH is a sidedraft variant of the Carter YF. (So it is essentially a YF with the float bowl reoriented 90 degrees.) Standard equipment on 53-55 Corvettes (I6, three carbs) and later on, turbocharged Corvairs (flat 6, single carb). Also early '50s OHV Nash sixes with optional twin carburetors.

Here is EJ Potter (aka "Michigan Madman") and his 1710ci Allison V12 powered '57 Plaza sedan.

He was also known for riding his Widowmaker motorcylces - 500hp small block Chevys turned sideways, direct drive to the rear tire, no clutch at all - just a kickstand thrown down once the wheelspeed was up. Insane!

He is still alive and well today...

Look closely in the back seat... it appears he has one. Safety first!

I heard Art Arfons built a jet-powered '57 Plymouth 4dr to match race the Allison powered one, but never seen a picture of that car or any race.

C'mon... lots of Mopar race cars out there. I'll have to scan some pictures of Norm Thatcher's stock-bodied salt racers. He had a BAD '59 Dodge with a stroked, blown, 8-carb 392 Hemi. Insane.

Here's a couple more...

Belts and a helmet in use here...

This car was used in Motorkhanas (first pic), Dirt Circuit (second pic), Hillclimbs (nobody took any pics, too afraid!) and regularly hit the big circuits in the odd lap dash (sprint). But the third pic is actually of my friend Bob Levett driving around to our flag-waving point at Warwick Farm, one of his mates snapped the pic as he went through Homestead Corner. I wonder if this was the day he spun the car in the Esses?

It's a 1960 Chrysler Royal...

That's composed of a '54 Plymouth chassis, the centre body section from that model, but with updated rear window and a slightly lowered roofline (you can just about see the creases where it's indented), bodywork extended front and rear with all the Forward Look influences, front you can see, rear like a De Soto with torpedo lights in the fins (earlier models were very much like a '55 Plymouth) and a 313 Poly with 3-speed Torqueflite.

You'll find other pics of these models I've posted previously in other threads. They were made from 1957 to 1963 or so, the old 8¼" rear end survived in them until the very last, when what appears to be a very special (length- and perch-wise) 8¾" rear was fitted. Originally it had a 230 flathead with a 3-speed, or if you got a Powerflite or an overdrive 3-speed you got a bigger flathead. Six months into the model the first of the V8 Polys was fitted, I think it was a 303? The 313 came soon afterwards.

There was a small number of station wagons ('Plainsman') made, relatively speaking a large number of factory-built ambulances, and the 'Wayfarer' couple utility (styleside pickup) made a lot of friends and sold very well.

Thanks for the info Ray! I like those Aussie built cars, they are strangely proportioned and very cool!
