Yeah... those numberplates are certainly as much a work of art as is the car!

Now wouldn't that be awesome up the Norton Summit Road, Adriana?

With brakes to frighten the pants off you on the way down, too...

oh my goodness! you have made my day h-bomb!!!!! STUNNING!!!!!!

i wonder what the original colour was? maybe it was airforce blue and they changed the tone slightly... i think this is the 2-door i saw about a year ago in i think mopar action or mopar muscle magazine... there was only a small pic, and im still kicking myself for not buying the $14.95 magazine... if anyone has the mag im talking about ill buy it off you if you wish to part with it or just if someone knows what issue it was... do you have the contact details of the owner.... that colour is just devine... any inside shots?

thanks so much, adriana

I thought you'd get a kick out of this one. My buddy Pete and I were talking about the car while were at the show and I said "Adriana's gonna flip over this one."

The car was built by a guy in Tennessee who has a shop called "Chuck's Hot Rods," or something along those lines.

The two pics above are the only two I took. Pete took a couple as well, but we both neglected to take any of the interior. The car is a four-speed, by the way.

You sound like you're in the same dilemma (sp?) as me with regards to painting your own car Adriana - keep changing my mind, just can't decide! there's so many great colors! Did you ever see a '61 plym in Lavender Metallic? pale purple metallic color...check out the actual color chip of it... WOW! I was going to do my '61 Belvy in that.

no i have not... ive seen the johan promo coupe models in that colour... i guess it was just a little flamboyant in its day, lol... i did see a small pixelated thumbnail pic of a purple ragtop in scandinavia/ finland somewhere, alas i think it was undercoat purple not original purple... ive not seen a suburban either in carnival red so i keep resorting back to the original colour... im so indecisive, what ever i end up deciding i will probably not be happy with anyway so i guess just stick with original and that way i can just blame the original owner... lol... hows your plymmies new owner getting along anyhow? cheers adriana

Adriana, Broderick's (he's named for Broderick Crawford, the star of Highway Patrol) new owner in Texas, Eric, got the 361 HP (High Perfomance) engine running well no problem, and it now sports police car Blcak & White! It's far from the pale purple that I'd have done (flashy color for a flashy car!) so he's no longer undercover, it's a patrol car now! ... just PM christinesbro here and I'm sure he'll send you a pic!

Original 1961 Plymouth paint chips by the paint manufactuers DuPont, Ditzler, Duco etc are readily available on eBay for from $5-10 and well worth having to see the actual color (they spray an actual sample of the factory paint on the chip), to add to the literature that goes with your year car, and helpful for deciding what color to paint it!

oh, thats who owns it now... yeah i have paint chips here, one of the first things i bought... theres a few colours that are rarely or never seen... maize yellow? silver gray metallic? bronze metallic? airforce blue? (this is the colour daves sub was and i persume the new 2door is/ was) oh how i wish i had one of those dealership stands where you could slip the colours behind the car and see what the coupe would look like in a certain colour and a draw of interior fabric samples... someday i will track on down... cheers adriana

Adriana, this is the '61 Suburban located in Montana that I mentioned many pages back.

Looks like a parts car, but a very complete one.

Here are two from Georgia, the first from a private 'collection' way down south, and the second wagon from a boneyard in Lafayette, GA.

Are those factory pine needles on those last couple pix ? I see a lot of cars with this option, but never see it listed on
the order sheet. And how about the blue, hood-mounted barrels ? Those really dress a car up, don't they !

its only because i hunt high and low for them... if someone did this much searching for another specific type of wagon you'd probably get the same results... there does seem to be more coming out the wood work lately however... i guess people are starting to see that wagons actually are liked and desirable to own... adriana

hello mark! i am so glad someone rescued that suburban! the seller was very uncooperative with me when he had it on craigslist... it was all sort of dismantled, i wanted t buy it as my daily driver, as it looked good from what i could see in the bad photos... but at least someone has it! did you have to do much to it when you got it? what engine does it have? if you would like your VIN and Dataplate decoded feel free to PM me the numbers and ill get back to you with the info... savoy plaza, you can post your wagon on here also! i have a few more to add here also... adriana

Thanks Adriana,
My buddy spotted this on craigslist, I had to laugh as the car was literally two miles from my house. It had an old school 360 that didn't run just laying in it. Really great shape though. New rechromed read bumper, the floors are solid, the only rust is to the lower portion or the read tailgate. I have a middle 80's slant six and several early sixties push button auto's. If I could find a good tailgate I would buy it. I really love these cars, can't wait to get it back on the road... won't be long....

Wow, I feel honored to have my wagon in this thread!

For what it's worth, here's my 2-door Suburban. I'm so happy to have found one, I want to show her to the world, but alas, with this crazy paint on her, it's kinda like telling everyone you finally married Jayne Mansfield, and then have her show up wearing a burlap raincoat!

I will be returning her to a more original appearance, but here she is today!

Pete

That thing is pretty ugly. It almost makes me like your 59.

I have a few quarts of primer left over from the last car I painted if you want to cover it up.

Thanks, Brain!

Thanks, too, Mark for the brochures, very nice.

Now I could use a little help from a '61 Suburban fan.
My wagon is lacking the 'Plymouth' lettering on the tailgate, and I've found some Plymouth emblem letters for sale on LeBay, my question is if these are the lettering for the '61 tailgate?

Item:

Any help would be appreciated! Thank you for your assistance!

Thank you, Adriana! I went ahead a bought the letters, and they are really nice. Although the seller was merely cleaning out her father's stock of parts and only knew the letters were marked "1961 Plymouth", they do appear to be correct.

Now I must ask for more assistance from a '61 Suburban owner.
Could someone make for me a paper template for the location of the tailgate letters?
Or at least give me some detailed measurements?

The previous owner 'shaved' the letters off, and did a fine job of filling the holes, so fine I can't get a definitive location for them!

Any assistance would be mucho appreciated, pm me for any details. Thank you!

This picture is just for reference, although I'd love to have the Sonoromic emblem!!

I found some things tonight, might interest some... I have two promo cars, I never have figured out if they had a wagon promo car???

no Johan wagon promo for 1961... they did make the Revell HO scale '61 chrysler corp set, which includes a '61 2door wagon. you could get the set assembled, get it to not assemble (which was also reissued by heiji), and could also get the '61 wagon boxed seperately. there are also the ICHIKO tin plate '61 suburbans, YOSHI also made one, which is not as accurate as the ICHIKOs... and now you can get the '61 suburban resin model... hope this helps... they made the 1:43 (?) Johan promo model for the '60 suburban... i'll take some pics if you like... or check out collection in the album section... adriana

SavoyPlaza, I only found that ad a few months ago on ebay and couldn't believe it... Hence I bought it and love it! I have a cool ad for life insurance I think it is, with the front end of a '61 suburban and a guy bending over the hood washing it with a bucket of soapy water... Adriana

Old thread but wanted my old car documented. 61 Plymouth Fury Wagon Golden Commando. It was my first car. I bought it for $50 when I was 15 from the original owner who used it as a shop car for his body shop. It had been sitting for about 3 years when I bought it. It had a 361 with a carter 4V. I stored it in my parents barn while I was in the military then sold it around 89. A few years ago a co-worker said he thought he saw it in a junkyard south of Dayton. Several months later I went to the yard to find it. It was nowhere to be seen. A regular to the yard said it might have been crushed when a company contracted by the yard crushed several cars by mistake. so here's the only pics I have of it.

That is a shame, Roger. That looked like a fairly complete car with a lot of options on it, including air conditioning.

IIRC it was a sears AC unit. I wish I had kept it but I had it about 10-12 years and hadn't done anything with it but get it running when I first bought it.

That stinks. Quite the wagon she was. I've never seen a compass on the mirror stick before!
