I asked the guy where he came up with his numbers, as I have not been able to come up with such low numbers, although it might be possible....he responds with, "what are your production numbers?"..haha I hope they're right as I have a 4 door hardtop just about like it!
Nice car, anyway. This car SHOULD be worth that, but I doubt he'll get anywhere near that for it.
Opinions, anyone?

Hi, Jeff:

Check out:

http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=18220&posts=4&start=1

I agree.  Those production numbers are way beyond any details I have ever seen.  I did contact AACA to verify that it was an actual national award winner.  They told me:

"The 1958 Dodge Royal Lancer, was owned and showed by a Mr. Greg Laggatt of Napanee, Ont Canada. He has not been an AACA member since 1999.

He won a 1st Junior award (27C0640 car badge) at Hershey, PA in 1995 and then won a Senior award at Hershey, PA, in 1996.

The vehicle was sold to a James Ward (not an AACA member) in 1997."

In further comments, they did confirm it is a Custom Royal and gave me the following information:

"The vehicle is listed as a Dodge Custom Royal Lancer 2dr Hardtop.  The Vin # is LD32-4517."

They must have meant LD3W-4517, I guess.  It is a very nice example of a '58 Dodge, but way, way over-priced, at least for the U.S. market.  I am not as familiar with Canadian cars, but having a Royal interior is a real turn-off in a Custom Royal at that price.  I would think you could hunt down and find a spiffy convertible for less.

The most detailed numbers that can find put Canadian Custom Royals at 5,097 units.  Serial numbers go from 1001 to 6097 - so this one is #3517,  69% of the way through the run (not too incredibly late).  Of the Canadian Custom Royals, I have never seen a production breakdown of how many sedans, Lancer coupes, and Lancer sedans were built.  Not to even mention trim options and so forth.

I would say if they advertise it like that, they now "own" this data and should have to live up to it: they should be able to produce the evidence.  If I had that much to spend on a '58 Dodge, that would be a huge turn-off if they could not verify those numbers conclusively.  If they couldn't, why in the heck would you give that much money to a liar?

If anyone really is going to buy this car, they should contact Greg Leggatt or James Ward first.  I have never heard of Ward, but I think Leggatt has a pretty good reputation on this site.  You might be able to get the straight dope from them.

I hope nobody gets offended, but I would rather have a full U.S. 58 Dodge or a full Canadian 58 Crusader / Regent / Mayfair that one of these hybrids.  In my personal opinion, these nifty hybrids are worth a bit less, not a king's ransom more.

Oh, and in response to the salesman's question, you should reply:

"I have production figures from Bill Watson at 137,942!" Tell him to put that in his pipe and smoke it.

Haha, thanks for the response Mike. You're right, Canadians kind of got screwed a bit on the Custom Royals, as they have U.S. Royal-style upholstery. This car has the correct pattern/type of fabric. The salesman was also wrong on the sentence," built FOR Canada.." as these cars were built IN Canada, not FOR us. (hence the 'W' in the serial # for Windsor, Ontario)
Also that's a good point, for that kind of dough you could buy several of 4 door hardtops/sedans or a ragtop.
The car also has the wrong intake; unless it's a typing error: he says it's a 2 barrel and it should be a 4 barrel according to my original advertising. All I can say is, typical dealer/salesman ploys.

No worries, Jeff:

I am glad you re-posted this. I never knew the asking price. I remember that they were selling a black and eggshell Custom Royal Lancer coupe a while ago for $36,000 or so. I thought that was too much! From what I remember of the black and eggshell car, it was very appealing.
