I'd totally forgotten about "King Creole" (B&W pic w/the NY ragtop).

That's not only Elvis standing on the curb, but it's also Carolyn Jones - a.k.a. Morticia Addams of "The Addams Family" - sitting in the NY.....

no, its a scene in the movie "it happened at the worlds fair" from 1962.

seeing that 61 dodge convertible... it has a 60 windshield, is that a pre production car? or had convertibles still the bubble windshield in 61?

I recall reading a story about Gary Cooper. When asked what he did for fun, one of the things he mentioned was "canyon carving" in his '57 Fury.

When you are talking about cars in movies you have to use this website!

The website that describes this car is in error. They think it's a 1955 model whereas is is really a 1959 model - not the same thing at all.

Quote: Nor will visitors be able to ignore the bright pink 1955 Chrysler Crown Imperial Convertible (€28,000-40,000), formerly the property of Led Zeppelin frontman Robert Plant, and first among a number of machines formerly owned by the likes of Mick Jagger and Elton John!
End Quote.

Brian Setzer of The Stray Cats 1958 Dodge Custom. These last three artists I have seen "Live" in concert Roy Orbison in the early '80s at The Edinburgh Playhouse ( I was a kid and didn't really know who he was ,but when the curtain came up to the riff of Pretty Woman and the crowd went wild I Knew he was Special).I saw the Stray Cats at the Hammersmith Odeon in 1989 and Robert Plant and Lemmy(of Motorhead) appeared on stage by surprise and jammed with The 'Cats on Eddie Cochran's C'mon Everybody and Gene Vincent's Be Bop A Lula-Brilliant.

NONONONONO...etcetcetc...! That red "D500" is a complete fraud.

That car was a blue 361 car, that a certain person (Paul Garlick) created, over several years, in the late 1980's, to be the
fake-D500, in red, with a fake provenance, to M.M. .

Initially, the car was "rumored" (by Paul) to have belonged to someone 'associated' with M. M. .

I have a photograph, taken on Xmas (forget the precise year it was taken) , with Paul grinning at the camaramen, sitting in that
blue 361 Polara.

Paul, also, famously, tried to pass-off a 1961 Plodge as being an export car, to Mexico--it's that very-nice looking turquoise Dodge
with the PLY front end, and with a Toilet seat trunk.

If not for quick contact to Hemmings Classic Cars, by a Daily List Server member, that car was all-set to have been featured in a
major article in H.C.C. . which reportedly spent $2,000.00 on article-preparation work, on that car.

As I've saved those discussions, I should be able to reference those thread discussions, for those who don't already read the
messages to that "Mailing List" , which membership & Archives are found on the FWDLK's homepage masthead subject-listings.

Marilyn's secretary/house-keeper did own that all-white CRL hardtop, as seen in the newsreels.

She did not own a 1961 Dodge convertible (and certainly not that particular blue 361-engined car.)

Ricky Nelson's 1958 Plymouth Fury convertible(special order) there are pictures of it in either TV Star Parade 03/58,TV Radio Mirror 07/58,DIG 11/58 or LIFE magazine 12/58-but I don't have copies of them, anyone got any?.
So here is his brother David Nelson in his '57 Dodge Coronet convertible with Ricky chatting up the girls.

Those late fifties TV shows were great for us here in Australia... we saw cars that weren't on our streets, and the ones that really made an impression with me were those cop cars on Highway Patrol!

Unlike you, we didn't really get this show until they were using Dodges, so those were the cars we saw mostly even though it seems that Buicks in earlier years get a lot of attention from the websites now.

The opening scene, IIRC, had a close up of a front wheel of the Dodge, tyre horribly distorted, doing a U-turn or something... and Broderick Crawford was a part of our lives.

Those late fifties TV shows were great for us here in Australia... we saw cars that weren't on our streets, and the ones that really made an impression with me were those cop cars on Highway Patrol!

yes, i watched every episode since i have em on dvd! great show.

Maybe I should get the DVDs too?

Funny, you know, looking at some of the web sites, reading the outline for some of the stories, I remember at least one of them and it's 48 years ago and I only saw each show once!

I saw Ricky at his home in Hollywood in 1958 and he was driving a candy metallic blue 58 Fury coupe.... not a convertible.

Did you get any photos of it?sounds really flash in candy blue metallic.Since we're mentioning Highway Patrol we'd better mention Fred Gwynne and Joe E Ross in Car 54 Where Are You?...

firedome - 2008-02-13 12:13 PM Ward Cleaver always drove a Plym, including a '61 Belvy 4 dr. Ozzie Nelson had Mopars too I think - BUT the Granddaddy of ALL Mopar movies is the classic 1962 flick "It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World" ... it's full of FL era Mopars of all kinds chasing each other and crashing it things all over the Wild West - a great, funny movie, with almost every big actor & comedian of the time - and a Mopar lovers dream!!!!!

Actually Ward Cleaver didn't buy MoPar until the third season. He was strictly a FoMoCo man in Season One and Two (1957 Ford). The 1957 Ford's tailfins were tiny in comparison to what was being offered by the 1957 Forward Look line.

I agree with the recommendation of the movie "It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, World." It was a 90 minute advertisement for Chrysler Corporation, and the plot was pretty funny too.

He drove a '57 F*rd in some of the earliest episodes.

How about some pictures of Peter Gunn (Craig Stevens) and some of the cars on his show? I don't have them otherwise I would post them myself, maybe someone else does. I just watched the great St Louis Bank Robbery with Steve McQueen, no one actually drives a Forward look car, but there is a scene where one of the robbers is doing a stakeout of the bank in a Desoto dealership lot, a nice rear shot of a 58.

You can find some clips of the "Peter Gunn Show" on the 59 Plymouth web site:

I don't think the stories hold up all that well but the cars are great. The series has been released on DVD.

I don't have a pic, but I've seen the movie a hundred times. In the Ed Wood "classic" Plan 9 From Outer Space, our hero drives a really nice-looking '57 Belvedere ragtop.

It was more of a grownups world back then, you never would have seen a grown man, in his 30s or beyond wearing a baseball cap unless he was playing baseball.

True, but every generation has issues with hats. Look at the American and British kids who fought in WW II.

They wore their uniform hats at all sorts of strange angles so they'd look "jaunty", but they defeated two of the most powerful military forces on the planet.

Wearing their hats correctly did not help either the Nazis nor the Imperial Japanese!

No pictures.... didn't expect to see him and they likely would have been in black & white anyway. It was stunning with that blue with the gold tone side trim. I didn't ask but I always thought it was interesting that blue & gold were the colors for UCLA, which Ricky was attending at the time.
