Location: Parts Unknown | Anyone have a decent photo showing the roof rack on a 55-56 Dodge-Plymouth wagon ? I have located one, but it is not on a car and does not look right to me. A 55-56 DeSoto-Chrysler unit should look the same judging by the numbers in the parts book (only the cross bars are longer). Any help is appreciated.

Location: Parts Unknown | I guess I am of the school that does not see wagons as slick or clean, but rather the opposite .... battleship cruisers taking the scout troop to Yellowstone. How am I going to get all those scout packs tied on the roof without a roof rack ?

Location: Parts Unknown | Thanks, Mark. That is about how good my pix are for detail. I can get the general idea, but not enough for hard details. That is a nice looking car. Looks to be pink and charcoal. They even ante'd up for the bumper accessory group. Just add wires and that is MY idea of a full fledged battle-ready wagon !!!!

Location: Parts Unknown | Thanks again. The rack offered to me is obviously NOT one of these, but rather a one-piece "ring" anchored on the four corners by similar stanchions. Seems to me this type was used in the 1950 era ? Man, I gotta find me a set up for our car !

Regular Posts: 81 Location: Akron, Ohio | HeyDoc, I have one that is similar to Vedette's shown in the previous reply. I can get you pictures of the rack but it is off a 1958 Desoto wagon. Do you know if the 55-56 wagons used the same roof rack?

Exner Expert 19,174 posts. Neil passed away 18 Sep 2015. You will be missed, Neil! Posts: 19146 Location: bishop, ca | Brent, the lateral roof curvature looks to be the primary concern. Your roof rack probably needs to be re-chromed (unless you REALLY scored, on it!), so the o.a. length looks like it can be cut-to-fit. Did Dodge offer an optional roof rack in '56? It didn't, in 1957-1959, iirc. I am very PRO-roof rack, on wagons!

I will have to figure out the rub bars. Sure ! I'd love to see pix. Hit me backchannel cgico@comcast.net Thanks, B.

The 55-58 parts book lists all the roof rack parts for 55-58 Dodge as well as the other lines. I do not keep a 59 parts book, so you are on your own on that one. But I have seen 59 Dodges with racks, so ..... ?

Regular Posts: 81 Location: Akron, Ohio | I was going through some pictures and found ones of the roof rack from the 1959 Desoto wagon in the Chrysler museum. That is one nice car. Location: Parts Unknown | Yup ! That's the ticket. I would prefer to find a 55-56 Dodge-Plymouth, as it is fit to size. But it looks to me as if "they" just made the thing a little bigger for the Chryslers and DeSotos, and adopted the big one across the board from 57 on. So, ... now to find one !

Elite Veteran Posts: 1176 Location: D-70199 Heslach | I would like to take up the roof rack subject again. We all know that mamopar had its own roofrack but but does anybody know the secrets about it... I'm interested, if the roof rack on FL-Cars came direkt from the factory and this cars get their rack straight on its assembly line. But this means, the first customer had to order this, but I could not find any note on "RossRoys Standard and Optional List on 57 DeSoto". Or is a an "Accessory Group"? There must be a note on the IBM Card, too - but I could not read the text on mine. Somebody has a readable IBM Card ? And also on interest is, are this roof rack on the cowl-tag as well ? There is no stamping code on the data plates. From what I've found, the roof rack wasn't available from the factory on a 1960 Chrysler and maybe Plymouth but was on Dodge. Only dealer-installed on the Chrysler. I've yet to see a build card or sheet for one. It's not shown on the order form for Chrysler. It's shown in the Dodge brochure but not the Chrysler or Plymouth. The Dodge brochure mentions that it's a "new" option. I have seen a photo of cars being loaded at the Fenton, Missouri factory and a Dodge wagon has a rack on it but none of the Plymouths do. Another showing a lot full of new cars there shows a lot of wagons and no roof rack to be seen.
