Subject: Desotos rescued!

Location: Williams California		I had been in contact with an elderly man that had no less than 5 Desotos on his property in southern Oregon. A customer had told me that he might be interested in selling them, as he had lost his ability to drive some years back. I called him many times, but his response was that he would have to go look at them to see what they were worth.

My customer called Thursday, to inform me that he had passed away, and his brother had moved in the clean the property up,as he wanted to sell it quickly, and the cars were available, at a price of $1000, but all had to be removed by Monday. By the time I was able to reach the brother, he had called a scrap yard to purchase the cars at the price of $1000. I convinced him to hold off until the weekend, and I guaranteed him that all cars would be gone by Sunday afternoon. He agreed to it, and here are some pics of the cars, none have been cleaned up. The red/white Firedome sedan runs good, and was stored inside since 1982. ---John

Location: Williams California		Here are pics of the other three cars, still on the trailers. Note the spanish moss growing on a couple of the '59's. The '55 Firedome Coronado has excellent pit-free chrome, and an engine that was overhauled just before the owner lost his driving ability. ---John

I'm not a sedan guy, but I've always been partial to those '55 DeSoto Firedome (I think Fireflite offered 'em as well) Coronado's - the only DeSoto with a 3-tone paint job. Just a sharp car, even in decay. Think you'll be able to get it running?

Shoot, for $1,000, you can't shake a stick at any of those babies. Surface rust and moss abounds, but they're all straight as an arrow and complete - and one runs to boot!!! Any frame issues that you can see?

John, God bless you, guy. You're doing a hell of a service in rescuing these cars.

One full size '50- mid '70s American car has plenty of steel. And theft of older radiators from vehicles as well as wiring from inside street light poles is rising.

Kenny, the old fellow had a few interesting ideas regarding his cars. The red car does have a trans cooler fabricated from an aftermarket A/C condenser, the sportsman 2-door hardtop has a '64 Chrysler dash fitted into it as well. The '55 Coronado looks like it will be a presentable car once the moss is washed off, I'll have to give 'er a good cleaning, and re-post some pics. ---John

You're not kidding about these thefts, I know about it first hand. While I was away for my wedding, somebody got my gate open and went into my barn and stole 40-50 good radiators I had saved. Funny thing was, they walked by a plasma cutter, Miller welder, boxes of tools, etc. to get to the radiators. I'm sure it was some tweeker just after getting money for their next baggie. Someday, they'll get caught, but they had better hope it isn't me who catches them!!! ---John

It is sad the old guy had to pass away in order for you to get your hands on them, but sometime that is just the way it goes. It is also a shame that you had those radiators stolen. Did you check with you local scrap yard to see if anyone had brought them in for recycle. That is how abunch of people around here are getting caught. It had to be someone that knew you were gone and knew where the loot was at. Anyway congrats on recuing those Desotos. I still think you are lucky as hell,lol.

You really have to look around while you are there. Hemi's, 4 speeds, crossram parts etc,, even good fenders and hoods, dash clusters swivels??

Nah, it's a Firedome Coronado, ronbo.

Yeah, I thought John's '55 above was a Fireflite initially (I thought you could get the Coronado option on both the Firedome AND Fireflite in '55, though it was only available for the one year and only on a 4 door sedan), but he says it's a Firedome.

Either way, if I had it to spare, I'd give AT THE ABSOLUTE VERY LEAST $1,000 for that beautiful Coronado alone - as she sits this moment.

Now, this gets me to wondering:

In 1955, Chrysler had the St. Regis option for the New Yorker hardtop, DeSoto had the Coronado option for the Firedome (and Fireflite?) 4 door sedan and Dodge had the La Femme option for the Custom Royal Lancer hardtop - was there a special paint/interior option of the like for Plymouth in 1955?

Usually, there is an accumulation of parts that goes with finding a group of cars like this, but there was absolutely nothing loose lying around, other than some old equipment, and dilapidated travel trailers. The brother did say that he would call me if there were any auto parts that turned up in the outbuildings when he cleans those out. ---John

Ron, the car has a power seat, but manual windows. I hate this daylight saving time change, there is no daylight left once I leave my office and head to the yard. ---John

No problem, John....I must admit, I've always been a sucker for the '59 DeSotos/Chryslers, but I really like the single headlight '57 Chryslers.

I just found the keys and title to that one. I'll do a bit of rust checking when I get out to the yard. I do know that the hole in the bottom of the right door was not from rust, but from an overzealous neighbor pulling the car with his tractor to move it. A piece of equipment gashed the bottom of the door due to his carelessness. ---John

Yeah, I may buy all the glass (if it's tinted) as I plan to drive the '57 a lot and will have to add A/C if it's going to be a summer car. Our daughter has all but commandeered the '68 Imperial. It looks like the Imperial is going be her first car. For her sake, I hope gasoline isn't much over $4.00 per gallon by the time she gets her license. With all the work she's helping me with and will be doing to that beast, it would be a shame if she couldn't afford to drive it....we will not take out a second mortgage just to fill the tank!

The Coronado came as a springtime addition to Fireflite series in 1955. There wasn't such model like Firedome Coronado in that year ('54 was)..

Thanks for the clarification, Mark. I must have had Firedome on the brain!

Huh. TWO green DeSoto sedans. I guess the old guy liked green. The one with the moss looks like it's riding a little high. Has that engine been pulled or is that an optical illusion?

Walt, I had given Mark a price of $3000 for the '55 once the lost title issue is resolved.

As to the other four cars, the red/white 4-door Firedome is in my wife's posession, got it cleaned up and running good, the pea green '59 4-door has been cleaned out, and was found to be entirely rust free, the light green '59 4-door is definitely a parts car, the trunk had been lined with rubber matting which held water in a pool inside, causind nasty black mold on everything inside, and the 2-door HT is still setting in the same place where photographed before. ---John
