At the time that photo was taken, I lived just a few miles from there,

Location: North Australia		I had to go back a page to look Doc. It is an neat picture. Sid, nice pics Man!. As an Australian, this thread and lots of other threads on this site are my best reference to this American era, I get the vibe, and I see why it is so loved. We had a similar thing in Aus, but much smaller scale. I missed a lot of it, I'm only 53 years old. But lots of Aussies are keen old car Guys (both back in the day and now). Same with our Kiwi brothers. I am perplexed,,, what is the car next to the 61 Plym, the pic with the guy in the white shirt? Steve.

Thanks, Steve. yes, same here in Germany, it was called the "american era". German manufacturers of all kinds copied american things and the charts were full of american pop songs converted to German
There is a reason the "50s" were already missed and worshipped in the early 70s, barely 10 years later, when the memories were still vivid, as mirrored in countless movies. Some songs even made it back into the charts. Looking back, I miss the 70s, as terrible and tastless they appeared to me back then. I took all the relics of the wonder years for granted, they are mostly gone now.

That car is a 61-62 Pontiac Tempest. The standard engine was a 4 cylinder 194 cu. in. which was a 389 V-8 cut in half.


The 1961-63 Tempest, ½ V8 engine up front, also used Corvair transmissions (manual and Powerglide) mounted in the rear. The driveshaft from the engine to the transmission was a long bar, similar to a suspension torsion bar, so there was a slight bend along the bar. Won Motor Trend's Car of the Year Award for 1961. It was all downhill from there and the 1964 Tempest shared its new intermediate body shell with the Chevelle.

Lakewood is a suburb of Denver, Colorado, and today there's hardly any way to tell where Denver ends and Lakewood begins. It looks as though the Dart patrol car doesn't have anything special in it (i.e., no D-500 badge on the rear of the trunk lid). Of course, in that day, the ordinary cops on the beat had fairly economical cars with small V-8s and even 6's with the hi-po ones going to the state police who patrolled the highways. My town, Pueblo (about 100 miles south), at about that time even had Ramblers which were a source of amusement to us who "cruised the gut" (driving around major streets looking for drags and girls -- not necessarily in that order).

Joe: While that might well be true, the Lakewood in question in the photo isn't near Denver unless there was an earthquake that dropped the elevation to 50 ft AMSL and it shifted to Los Angeles County.

Location: So. Cal		The caption for that Lakewood photo says that the Lakewood sign was used until 2006. What idiot decided to take them down in 2006? Today this area is ridden with crime as it is too close to Paramount and Compton, which are holes. But back then, the people living there were quite a bit richer than most Americans and the community was quite new.

That one photo above of the red sandstone formation with a hole is Window Rock which is, appropriately enough, in Window Rock, Arizona, the capital of the Navajo Nation. It is in the extreme northeast corner of AZ and is the governmental, health, and administrative center of the Navajos. It is in an area that covers several thousand square miles mainly in Arizona and Utah (as well as smaller parts of Colorado and New Mexico) that is known as Monument Valley. Monument Valley was a favorite site for the great American movie director, John Ford, to make several of his movies such as "Stagecoach," "The Searchers," "Rio Grande," "Fort Apache," and "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon." Google the last if you want to see some excellent color scenes of Monument Valley (which really isn't a valley but a very, very extensive wild and beautiful area) The movie doesn't have any FLK cars as it relates a quasi fictional story about the U.S. Army during the Indian wars of the 1870s, but is celebrated for its cinematography. I personally like it because the uniforms and equipment are accurately depicted as representative of the the time and the troops look like soldiers, not cowboys.

Location: northern germany		Joe, you are not going to find someone east of the pond more fascinated by postwar America than me. One of the reasons is
they aired all the 1950s American movies in the 70s in Germany, another, as a kid I had access to an old school-library that
hasn't been updated since the early 60s, that had a lot of 1950s American paperbacks for kids, in Germany called "Jugendbücher"
(youth-books) translated to German that gave me an insight into the american way of live in the 50s and the room in the school,
I was supposed to take lessons in, featured a full set of National Geographic magazines from 55-60 with all the car ads!!!
So I naturally know all the films you listed and btw, I'm a big fan of John Wayne.

Googled San Juan Capistrano but couldn't find a picture looking remotely like this. Can the 2nd cvt identified if it is an Adventurer or Fireflite? The hardtop in the background seems to be a 58 Desoto too.

Possibly a 1960 Chrysler, but the resolution of the photo doesn't support blowing up the picture to make the ID more exact. I would question why the parade cars are 1958 models, if 1960 models are out, but then, maybe the parade organizers wanted convertibles only.

If you follow along the belt line of the "Chrysler" in the San Juan DeSoto photo, you will notice there are no fins through the front door. The fins on the 1960 DeSoto and Chrysler started on the front door.

How about a 1959 DeSoto or Chrysler?

No, I never had, I edited 40 minutes after my initial post, after I was searching for pictures of San Juan Capistrano. The car in the background looks like a hardtop.
By "2nd convertible" I meant the 2nd convertible. Can you see the 2nd convertible?

You are the 2nd person claiming I edited something that I didn't.
