The trolley bus pictured in the Columbus, Ohio postcard is a 1948 Marmon-Herrington Model TC 48 with General Electric motors and controls. It was replaced by diesel buses on May 30th, 1965. Some of the coaches from this order were re-sold to Dayton, Ohio for continued use or for spare parts.

The ones used by Dayton remained in service into the 1970s and '80s, but were replaced by new trolley buses rather than diesel coaches!

Brummbaer's post a few above this got me to thinking. They don't make advertising post cards of individual busineses anymore. Color street scene pictures seem to be a thing of the past, too. Did you ever notice how even into the 60s, it was common to take family pictures with the car in the background, or at least included? We don't do that much anymore either. 50 years from now our grand kids won't have much chance to look back and see the street as it was today. Who is going to print the digital photos on our computers? Will they even be able to print them if they desired? I take a goodly number of pics at work, and they have to be paper prints. I think I'll start taking street scene pics, and labeling the back as to exactly what they are.

AND, to expound upon John Harvey's conmment, above : "digital" images will be routinely lost, destroyed and/or discarded/erased
so that, in 50 years, there might well be virtually no archival (hard-copy) records of anything!

Digital "prints" certainly suck.

50 years from now :"Oh, wow, buy a digital image of something" (which appearance/content can be changed, at will...)

You're welcome, Sven Not cards, but private photographs.

A woman from Washington, DC decided to photo document Pittsburgh's tram system as it was facing a phase out during the 1960s. Thirty six of forty lines and 300 of 400 cars were removed from service between April, 1964 and November, 1971.

Four lines still run, having been modernized. The last of the old trams were retired in 1999. Now they run modern light rail cars. But they are talking about expanding the system again!

The woman was also a nationally known license plate collector. She was somewhat partial to Chryslers since that's what her father drove.

Very interesting woman, she captured two very special and now rare modes of transport FL cars and trams.Couple more, unusual Chrysler Limo in first and in the second all these cars would now be in that building.

That's a remarkably well trained eyeball you've got there Cowboy. What do you base your pick on? The only visible part of the green car is the greenhouse and a little tiny piece of a tailfin on the right side. It might be a 1959 Studebaker Lark or Hawk for all we can say. Pittsburgh wasn't exactly swarming with Austin or Morris imports in the early 60s.

It is 100% one of these, check the front and rear 1/4 vent windows, slight rear roof overhang and fins.

Yes, it was clearly BMC... I had an initial thought it might have been a 6/99 or A99, but on closer examination the smaller breed of badge engineered Farina-styled lever-damped junk had to be the answer. 4 x 4.5"... who needs it?

Frankly, the roof shape stood out plenty well enough for anyone versed in these cars to know what it was...

Yes,it is based on a '59 Plymouth body but the badges on the top of the fin give it away as a Diplomat Custom or Kingsway Custom.

Yes I have to admit that you make a strong case for that. Comparing what I can see in the photograph with your examples it does look like a close match. That must have been a pretty rare bird even in those days as I've not seen another one like it on these shores. I wonder who was heavy into pain in those days that they would actually want an Austin or a Morris? Maybe there was a granola crunching liberal professor from Pitt University (with the tweed jacket w/leather elbow patches) who thought Morrises were the politically correct car for the Swinging 60s. I wonder if he thought the same way once he met Lucas, Prince of Darkness...

Austin Cambridge A55 or a Morris Oxford. The only FL is a 55 DeSoto coming down the hill.

Funny you should say that about Pittsburgh not having many Austin/Morris cars because thats a Morris Minor you see the roof of parked next to the subject car.Another Austin, this time a Westminster in one of the postcards.

Wow - you show 2 of my hometowns! - Endicott NY, where I live, the original home of IBM, and Ausable Chasm NY, near my summer place on Lake Champlain! That car museum is no longer there, as far as I know... RA in NY.

Roger, you should go and have a look and see if the car museum is still there in Ausable Chasm and find out if some of the cars in the parking lot made it inside, also in the Endicott one are The Frederick Executive Suites still quite as "Executive" as in the '50s,somehow in my mind I have an idea how they've ended up in modern day USA...

OK, .. so we have established that there was a Morris in Pittsburgh and another one 3000 miles away in Umatilla, Oregon. There *might* have been a 3rd one somewhere else ???

Great pix. I love this stuff. I expect to see a 5 year old ME standing in any one of them !

Mark - The Executive motel building is still there I think, will try to find out, there are several that look similar, but it'd be under a different name, and seedier than in the late '50s - Endicott has gone downhill quite a bit since IBM pulled most of their mfr'ing out - from 12,000 once to 800 now, & most of their old buildings have been sold, they lease back what little they still need here now that the big chip plant is in Fishkill... and Endicott-Johnson shoes, once the biggest shoe mfr in the world, went out of biz in the 70s. so the once nice Endicott shopping district Washington Ave is sort of derelict now, sad, like so many old Northeast towns that lost manufacturing and had the Big Box stores built outside of town.

As for Ausable Chasm, I think that building is still in use, I believe it might be a used car lot for a Ch**y dealer... I'll ask around. The area is a big tourist spot because of Lake Champlain. Rough winter weather though, and low survival for old cars, but I did find my rust free '70 MG there... probably because it wouldn't start any time it was below 20 in snow season, Oct to April!

Awesome pictures guys, where do you come across these? The one of the plymouths on cape cod is very cool, about 20 minutes from my house. The dealership pictures are my favorite though. Any more?

One of my favorites. You hardly ever see a 55 Desoto. But here's one in the right color for this image.

58 DESOTOS RULE - 2008-01-03 3:12 PM I wonder where this motel was in Dover, NJ? Was it on US Hwy 46 or NJ State Route 15? I lived in that area for three years from 1987 to 1990 and I don't remember this place. Nice 56 Plymouth though.

The Skytop was on Rt 46. I used to drive by this motel on the way to a summer job that I had after graduating from high school in the 70s.

The colors look a bit tweaked with age and not-so-great printing colors of the day, but DeSoto had a color in 55 called "emberglow" that was a stunning orangey-salmon kind of color. Quite striking with white / cream or charcoal / black contrast paint. One more reason to love the finned era cars.

Definitely Emberglow. There's an overall magenta cast in the image, which makes the pink look orangey. I could've cleaned it up in Photoshop, but I just threw it out there as is.

This one I like. 6 1958 Plymouths of various models (Plaza & Belvedere) offered for sale. The paint job of the fourth one from the left looks like Miss Belvedere's colour. Maybe this the dealership that she came from.
