If you bought that car now and went to restore it, would you leave the portholes or restore it back to original? After all, the license plate on the car is 1957 so the portholes are almost original! I would favour leaving them there... It reminds me of the bloke here who scoured the USA to buy a 5-window '33 Chev coupe to turn into a hot-rod. He found one in Chicago. As it was from the 'colourful' era of that city it had many signs of gunfire in its presence, including a row of bullet indentations from a machine gun. A great bit of patina to leave at least some of that alone, if nothing else the ones on the firewall. But they were the first ones he fixed!

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9899 Location: Lower Mainland BC | hemidave - 2018-01-14 8:23 AM 1959 Dodge Hemidave: Any I idea about the location and the sailor? It gave me shivers because his face reminded me of my uncle who had a son (that I can only vaguely remember) who was in the Navy, my cousin Johnny. Sad note: You can see the pack of cigarettes in the guys left front pocket. My cousin was a heavy smoker (too) and his position was in the engine room, home of tons of asbestos insulation. He died of cancer. Probably malignant mesothelioma that is now linked to asbestos exposure. The Navy used asbestos everywhere: engine rooms, boiler rooms, storage rooms, navigational rooms, galleys, mess halls, sleeping quarters and more. Asbestos covered the ceilings, walls and floors of these rooms. Steve McQueen who was in the Marines was punished by removing asbestos in a Navy/Marine ship. He died of mesothelioma at age 50. I don't know the location, but someone might recognize this base, although it would be difficult just seeing a couple of buildings. I'll see if the person who originally posted this pic has any info.

Expert Posts: 2308 Location: The Bat Cave, Fairborn, OH | This picture (or one very similar) appeared in one of the handy-man publications of the day (Popular Mechanics or Popular Science) as an inspiration to other hunters that showed how one man solved his dog transportation problem. Very clever and he probably didn't pay much for those portholes from a marine supply house.

My kid went to Pennridge. Where'd ya grab that photo from? Gregg Greeg I look all over for that picture after my attempts to take a sharp picture of my TV screen failed, but I could not find it. Finally, after several attempts, I managed to shoot this one. The still image came from episode 4th of "the Vietnam war" tv series on Mpt2.
