Yeah, we had them like the green one, both large and small versions...

But our De Sotos didn't have Fargo mascots. Those were on Fargos. Dodge, De Soto and Fargo sold alongside each other here until about 1959, but the body shape never changed from the first of the full-width windscreen version.

No dogleg A-pillars, no flash hooding over the headlights, no Sweptsides.

It's not all about Oz.

"While Desoto trucks were not sold in the United States they were produced here! On the same assembly line as Dodge trucks and right next to the Fargo trucks destined for the Canadian market. They would be considered “badge engineered” trucks as they were a Dodge truck with the Desoto nameplates intended for foreign markets like Mexico, Central America, South America, and lots of island nations in the western hemisphere."

That was why I asked for pictures...

I wanted to see what kind of De Soto trucks they had in Scandinavia. It was possible they had the British-built ones with bodies that looked like Leylands.

My query over the Fargo mascot on a De Soto stands, however.

The green DeSoto is an illustration and illustrations were not noted for their accuracy. Many errors were made especially when one illustration was used for more than one make and an artist just changed nameplates, emblems and hood ornaments. This particular illustration may have started out as a Dodge and was modified to a Fargo and then to DeSoto. But the hood ornament was not changed from Fargo to DeSoto. Not that the average truck buyer would have noticed.

A little history on Fargo, a truck that has been labelled as a Canadian truck that went to the export market, when in reality the opposite is true. And it started out as an American truck.

The very first Fargo Truck appeared in July, 1928, as a 1929 model in the U.S. and Canada. The 4 cylinder Packet (½ ton) used Plymouth's 4 cylinder engine (model Q). Thus the first Packet was model QC. The Plymouth engine was replaced by the DeSoto Six model K engine and the Fargo Packet became model KC. A larger 3/4 ton Clipper was introduced (model PT using Chrysler P engine), followed by the 1 ton Freighter line (model K-1). Larger 2 and 3 ton Fargo models were advertised as coming soon, but never did.

The Plymouth 4, DeSoto 6 (basically a Plymouth with a 6 cylinder engine) and Fargo were finalized for production during 1927. W P Chrysler wanted Dodge Brothers but planned the three models to be introduced whether Chrysler could acquire DB or not. The models went into production and Chrysler acquired DB at the end of July, 1928. DB built Dodge Brothers passenger and commercial cars as well as Graham Brothers trucks. GB Trucks became Dodge Trucks on January 1, 1929 and Chrysler decided to ease the Fargo off the market. The last Fargo trucks were built in the U.S. in the fall of 1930, classified as 1931 models. Chrysler of Canada built 41 QC and 3 PT Fargo Trucks. No KC or K-1 trucks were built in Canada.

During the two years and a bit the Fargo Trucks were on the market in the U.S., production totalled 1,024 QC, 2,090 KC, 1,421 PT and 7,715 K-1 models.

During 1930-32 Chrysler used the Fargo name on model 80, 81, 90, 91, 94, and 95 buses. These were either parlor car (a door for each row of seats and no centre aisle) or street car bus (one front door and centre aisle with seats on either side). Serial numbers were listed under Dodge Trucks in the "Model Chart and Serial Number Guide". As were the Graham Brothers Truck models and serial numbers. The above mentioned 1929-1931 Fargo Trucks used FEDCO serial numbers and never appeared in the model chart and serial number listings.

In 1933 Chrysler in the U.S. began building Fargo 1½ ton trucks (model HF) for export markets. The model line up was expanded by adding ½, 1, 2 and 3 ton models. In 1936 Chrysler of Canada began building Fargo Trucks for the Canadian market Plymouth-Chrysler dealers. The Canadian Fargos were the same as built in the U.S. In 1939 Chrysler of Canada began importing 4 ton Dodge Trucks but with Fargo nameplates and emblems. Serial numbers were US Dodge Truck numbers.

The first DeSoto trucks were built in the U.S. starting in 1939, model number prefix DC, all for export markets outside of the U.S. and Canada. 1939 serial numbers were in the U.S. Dodge Truck 1939 T series numbers. Chrysler Canada began building DeSoto Trucks with the new postwar series in 1948. Starting with the 1954 models DeSoto Trucks used Dodge Truck serial number sequences while the model numbers were Dodge Truck numbers with the letter "S" at the beginning of the prefix. Fargo Trucks added the letter "F" at the beginning of the Dodge Truck prefix. Canadian-built Fargo Trucks continued to used unique serial numbers through 1958.

The last Fargo Trucks for the Canadian market were built in 1972 and Canadian Plymouth-Chrysler-Fargo Truck dealers became Plymouth-Chrysler-Dodge Truck dealers for the 1973 model year. Export truck production from plants in the U.S. and Canada came to an end during the 1970's as Chrysler expanded its production of cars and trucks in foreign markets. As well, Chrysler sold British-built Dodge Trucks (now based on ex-Rootes Karrier and Commer models). When Chrysler sold off its foreign subsidiaries in 1978-82, the rights to the DeSoto name were sold to the Turkish company that had re-purchased the Turkish subsidiary. Thus DeSoto trucks are still built in Turkey. By the end of 1982 Chrysler's International Group consisted of Chrysler Canada and Chrysler Mexico. Dodge Trucks were built in Great Britain, but they were a product of Talbot, a subsidiary of Citroen-Peugeot. Talbot was originally Chrysler Europe and built cars in Great Britain, France and Spain. Chrysler sold Chrysler Europe in 1979.

Anyone who owns a 1970's Dodge Truck check the latch pillar on the driver's door. There should be a tag there with Plymouth, Dodge, DeSoto and Fargo on it. It was a case of just changing the nameplates by then. They all used Dodge Truck hubcaps or wheel covers.

Well actually it is a mobileshop. It was very common at countryside since to 70's and even these days there are many left (not so well desingned than that one ) when there are no crocery stores in small villages but there are lots of summer houses and people having vacations there on summer months.
Close to summer house mobile shop visits once a week. Nearest mart or market is more than 25 kilometers away.

Thanks for the rundown there, Bill, I know we can always count on you for history...

However, the pic of the truck I posted above would be well before Chrysler started making Commer-based trucks
(and some with a cab shared with Leyland in the seventies) in England would have been purely Dodge trucks,
using a Dodge chassis and local bodywork to bolster local content.

In Australia we had the complication that International Harvester had their truck bodies stamped by Chrysler
Australia and some shared components diluted the Chrysler model, some coming with an International cab roof
(pickups only) instead of the 'Pilot House' style. And the upgrade of the Australian-produced Pilot House bodies
in 1959/1961 was totally unique to this country.

A pic? Yes, a pic, and a close-up of that De Soto 'Parrot Nose' to show the source of the beast, Kew in England.
and a third pic of what we had from 1962 on - mildly altered International bodies over Dodge chassis:

I never understood 2-door station wagons...

Were they the 'businessman's coupe' of the fifties and sixties?

Not really. There were still cheap Plaza coupes available that you could buy. There are 2 reasons people bought these over a 4dr wagon, both of which have faded with time. One reason is that people were more frugal back then. Anything that saved a couple of dollars was worth it. Two door cars were cheaper and that was all that you needed to say to some folks to make up their minds. But there was another reason. Some people back then had a fear of 4 door cars with children. Two door cars were seen as being much safer because the kids couldn't open the doors while driving on the interstate. I've heard a couple of people from my father's generation express this.

Another common term associated with 2-door wagons back in the day
was "handyman's wagon". They were often owned by the local carpenter/
handyman, who preferred a car over a pickup truck to double duty his
work and personal life. I remember seeing a lot of them with lettering
painted on the door or side letting all know of someone's business.

I struggled with the 2 door wagon thing until my Mate bought a 57 Nomad. Nomads are not typical 2 door wagons though, having the coupe doors makes a big difference ( I like 56 Nomads a lot!).
I always take notice now when I see a 2 door Forward Look wagon (or a 4 door for that matter) So rare!

I sometimes wonder what would have happened if Chrysler had imported 2 door wagons and 2 door coupes into Australia. (That would be something......finding a RHD 58 Fury in the outback, in some farmers old shed!)

Steve.

So when did child-proof locks emerge?

I've seen them in cars back to 1959. There were undoubtedly others I didn't see or recognise.

===================================

This looks like the Columbia River, or one of its tributaries
like the Deschutes or Snake. With the boat on top, I'd say
he's more likely to be going fishing, but I have known duck
hunters to use boats, so you may be right. In my lifetime,
duck hunting was always a winter activity, regulated by the
State. Winter in this area is much colder than what this
feller appears to be dressed for.

My Dad loved to go fish all these places for steelhead. Some
of the photos posted in this thread of car ferries show the same
background. There were many of them along the river before
most were replaced by bridges. These scenes are distant
memories of tagging along on those fishing trips as a little
kid.

Seems a bit dry for the Columbia. But then again, the Tri-Cities is very dry and I am sure the Hanford area is dry.

The licence plates are white with dark numbers. Washington state plates were white on Green from 1954 to 62. http://staff.washington.edu/islade/run2.htm

Oregon plates were yellow on green from 56 to 74. http://www.oregonplates.com/licplatepicenlarged.htm

Idaho plates were dark on white in even years from 1956 to 64 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vehicle_registration_plates_of_Idaho

Montana plates were never dark on white from 56 to 68 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vehicle_registration_plates_of_Montana

So the money would be on Idaho. Who da ho? You da ho? No, I da ho!

The Columbia, anywhere upriver from The Dalles to where the Spokane River
dumps in looks like this. As does the Snake up to Lewiston, and the Deschutes
running way south, not even sure how far. The high banks are peculiar. Are
there river locations in Wyoming like that ?

The license plate looks like the 63-issue white, with dark green letters, that
replaced ALL previously issued plates, and were commonly seen into the 1980's.

We used to stop in Arlington, Oregon on those long ago fishing trips. I was
always taken by this sign on the outside of a tavern that faced the gas station.
Years later I went back and found it was still in place, but was no longer lit. It
took 15 more years of never catching the place open before I finally did find the
owner and purchased it from him. He said he quit using it when Oregon state
law banned the sale of to-go alcohol.

I remember the first years of my driving, I was paying $1.03 for the Super Unleaded at Amoco.

In 1960, the gas i pumped gas at my dad's gas station was $0.149 per gallon. That's no a typo -- it was FOURTEEN POINT NINE CENTS a gallon during what was a "gas war" (an event in which one company, or perhaps more, would try to reduce competition driving others out of the area or even out of business.

Nice batch there, sid! Not FL but I thot it was interesting the one shot of JFK in a Ford (with 60 Dodge behind) has California manufacturer ("MFG") plate. Also, the '61 Plymouth has really been growing on me last couple years. I did not appreciate them for the last few decades but those shots of them new with the chrome and aluminum all shiny look great! I have a couple '61 converts in parts car shape - they don't give the full effect.
