Very Cool video of a 2 very rare FL cars. I wonder where both of those cars are now. I'm sure the Limo survived or one would hoped it did.

Waiting for the ferry to Vancouver in Nanaimo BC circa summer 1956. I see a 56 Savoy and I think a 56 Chrysler 2 dr hardtop for starters.

That's a Chrysler Royal, either AP1 or AP2, Steve.

Yes, the original parade cars were built in 1952, using the grille of the 1951-52 Chrysler Imperial. The rest of the car was done under Exner, with the rear quarter treatment influencing the 1955 DeSoto, Chrysler and Imperial. They were built on an extended Crown Imperial chassis (147½" compared to the production 145½" wheelbase). The bodies were done by Chrysler employees, not Ghia, based on the full-size clay models from the styling department. They were labelled "Parade Phaetons" and shipped out to three cities - New York (black with light grey interior), Los Angeles (cream with rose red interior) and Detroit (green metallic with pigskin interior).

With the arrival of the 1955 models, the Parade Phaetons were starting to show their age. Chrysler updated the cars with 1956 Imperial front and rear ends. The New Yorker and Detroit cars were redone in off-white with red leather interior while the Los Angeles car was silver blue metallic paint with white interior.

Bill: You might need to update your info. The Los Angeles car is definitely white with red leather, at least now.

I ended my note on the Parade Cars with the 1956 update.

Since then, the New York car was repainted black sometime in 1960's but kept the red interior. Still owned by the City of New York.

The Detroit car was sold to Paul Stern, who then sold it to the Imperial Palace collection in Las Vegas. Robert Petersen purchased the car in 2001 and had it on display at the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles. Somewhere along the line it was painted white. Still has a red leather interior.

The Los Angeles car was repainted white sometime in the 1960's and still belongs to the City of Los Angeles. You can see the car in its original condition in the 1959 movie version of "Li'l Abner" where General Bullmoose is chauffeured around in the car. The car had the interior redone in red at some point.

So, we have two Parade Cars presently in Los Angeles, both painted white with red interiors.

1955

I have seen that photo associated with the "The 100 Million Look" designs led by Exner.

Discussion here: http://www.allpar.com/history/chrysler-years/chrysler-1955-56.html

"Exner had proven his skill at developing concept cars, but for 1955 he would have to design production cars to be built and sold in high volume and at a profit. As the leader of the design team, not just the sole designer, he would have to create distinctive designs for each of the five nameplates, using common components wherever possible. Finally, the cars should be built to the standard that Chrysler buyers had always received from Briggs bodies, whether or not they were aware of it."

Chrysler Corporation President "Tex" Colbert is in the front of the picture while the man in the light grey suit is Virgil Exner.

Not sure who the other two are.

Could be.

They were probably standing around watching the proceedings when Colbert told them they should at least be looking like they are working for a living. Had them stand/sit in the photo. Gave the photo that "group effort" look, too.

First time I have ever seen the other side of that fence. The employee's parking lot with a view of Highland Park in the background.

Dave --
A great picture showing Exner in first moment of triumph. No doubt the gentleman at the bottom is the corporation president (who's name I can't remember) and the others are the division chiefs. Very neat.

I was checking out that employee parking lot to see how many were driving Chrysler products.....

Way to go, Dave!
One thing does seem pretty obvious, there isn't and Jap c*** in the lot!
