Thanks' for posting the beautiful monochrome pictures Sid! Do you know if they are from Hong Kong or Japan?

Glad you liked them Wiz, i have no idea, i believe hong kong. here's where i found them: http://www.mikipress.com/m-base/atoz/

a picture of a Mitsubishi A6M Zero-Sen at the top of that webpage should be obvious to one of their allies which country it is,eh Sid?.

"to one of their allies"..... i don't know, the war is over for 71+ years in case you haven't noticed and germanys allies are the US of A, since long before i was born. and you mean the origin of things featured on the page gives a hint were these pictures were taken? so its the USA?

The 1958 Packard Hawk and 58L sedan in the auto show photo is certainly cool to see.

The 1958 Packard Hawk and 58L sedan in the auto show photo is certainly cool to see.

The light coloured car with the Continental-like trunk lid is a 1958 Studebaker Golden Hawk. The Packard Hawk used the 1953-55 trunk lid (no Continental bulge) with a faux spare tire cover, similar to the 1957-58 Imperial. The fins were riveted on. You can just see the headlamp pod on the Packard sedan. It, too, was riveted on.

The red one is a 1958 Studebaker Commander Starlight hardtop. Roof line styling was taken from the 1957 DeSoto and Chrysler. Studebaker-Packard had no money but did what they could to make a 1953 body look up to date for 1958.

I agree about that "Cities Service" sign, Sid. It seems Citgo's logo has been less than spectacular over the years!

No need to worry about that re-post, James. It's a good one!

i'm into mid century design, roadside architecture etc and that "cities service" sign in the 2nd picture
scares me! looks repulsively like straight out of the 80s! the shape, color, letters and logo. seeing it
without the cars i would have bet my last penny its not from the 50s.

================

The horizontal mesh and neon halo up top are the only clues
this isn't an 80's design. Cities always had the dull green and
the amorphic clover - BORING ! I think the only people that like
these signs are into them for nostalgic reasons, certainly not
becuase they were a good "jet age" design.

I am sure that when lit up, with the neon backlit letters (maybe
that whole mesh thing lit up from inside ?) it was more impressive
than it look in the daylight.

i think the mystic triangle or pyramid logo give the answer, in case someone thought time travel is not possible

Not a potato digger, but looks like a drag strip dryer... for drying the race track.

This was probably taken in early April 1960 based on the vegetation and the colour of the license plate (white on black = 1960), west of Regina Sask. If true, that is a 9 yr old me on the trestle in a red sweater and blue jeans with my oldest sister. I think my mother, who is in the car, didn't want to be photographed because she was pregnant with my younger sister. That is the 55 Canadian Dodge Regent that became mine when I turned 16.

My wife found this unopened puzzle at one of the thrift stores in Colorado Springs a few days ago for only $3. See if you can find the forward look car in the first photo before you scroll down to the second photo.

The caption on the puzzle underneath the red and white 1958 Dodge 2 DR HT is "1958 Swept Wing DODGE". It even has exhaust deflectors! But the mirror is mounted in the wrong location...

So sad. I guess snow brushes (and brains) hadn't been invented back then.

Snow brushes and scrapers were around back then. But drivers are just as stupid today. Have seen people driving down the street with a small area of the rear window cleared off - just enough to see there is a car behind them. At least today heaters put out more heat and can melt the snow on the side windows. No longer need frost shields.

Also, they still do not replace burnt out rear taillights. Notice the left brake light is rather dark while the right is nice and bright.

"Frost Shields"!! OMG I had totally forgotten about those stupid things (I guessed they worked but they were FUG-A-LEE)

Taillight bulbs out is a pet peeve of mine. When following somebody with one (or two) out, I often think how BCAA (AAA) should have small truck with all the bulbs on board and the power to pull folks over and then replace the bulb(s) for them for free. I am guessing that there would be a payback with few accidents resulting from actually being seen.

In my dreams.

It has been 20+ years since I drove the Mt. Rainier scenic loop, but the
road looked pretty much the same then.

Doc, I drove 410 last year and the Rainier loop looks about the same and just as beautiful as it did when you were there, except the narrow stretch between the Crystal cutoff and the pass has crumbled and shifted, and been patched enough to make me nervous. Maybe I'm just getting too old too fast!
