That was what nice young men wore to school at upper class private schools. No jeans, no t-shirts, no sneakers - everyone wore the same outfit.

And one removed one's cap when in the presence of a lady.

That appears to be a book satchel on the ground by his feet.

My dad sold insurance, in Toledo, and I very well remember him wearing this type of dress-up (but still, informal)
clothing, during the warm and humid Midwestern summertime.

As an old fudd who was in high school from 1956 to 1960, and in college from 1960 until 1965 (I crammed four years of college into five, to say nothing of grad school!), here are my memories:
1. I really can't tell if that cap is an "Ivy League" cap, as a "real" one had to have a buckle in back. With no buckle, it was only a "newsboy's cap." Considering the rest of his appearance, chances are pretty good it was Ivy League.
2. I didn't go to an "upper class private" school, only a parochial high school, and while we boys weren't in uniforms, we could NEVER wear sneakers, jeans, or T-shirts! Cords and "Chuko" shoes (black with thick soles, heels, and with a white strip between sole and upper) were really in as well as "penny" loafers -- but I wore simple lace-ons that I shined periodically, and corderoy, cotton, or wool pants.
3. After class, jeans were in, but never new and with the cuff rolled very tightly (a WHOLE inch bordered on the uncool!) just above the shoe top. I was never much for T-shirts (those were for the guys that rolled their packs into their sleeves -- I was supposed to be a jock so I didn't smoke) but we all rolled any shirt up so the chicks would see our muscles.
4. In college, cords were still in (especially white cords) and ivy league shirts (button down collars -- front and back -- and with the loop in back) and now Khakis came in -- again, with the loop in the back over the butt. Believe or not, only girls wore tennis shoes on campuses (and many even wore them with nylon stockings!). The first time I saw a guy in Bermudas and knee-highs, I gave him a wolf whistle, so he took off for the parking lot behind a few other laughs.
5. For what it's worth, I was criticized in those days for being a member of the "greasy T-shirt crew" because I liked to drag race. However, I always wore khakis, a button front shirt, argyle socks, and loafers when I ran (but the guys that beat me wore T-shirts).
6. If you want to see what cool guys wore back then, check some of the early Kingston Trio, Limelighters, and Beach Boys web sites for their attire then.

Location: milano, italy		yes, it's an italian movie....checked on the plates many years ago, and they belonged to a Fiat 600. No way of knowing where is the New Yorker. There also was a 56 DeSoto conv in Le notti di Cabiria, ( Nights of Cabiria) from Federico Fellini, with italian plates. Plates were real, but car disappeared...still active plates, but non existant address

just googled it. its on main street invermere, columbia valley BC canada. wonder if its still there.
