That looks like a 58 Studebaker to me, not a Chrysler.

jimntempe, I stand corrected. I received the photo from a friend who said that it was his Dad's 57 Chrysler. I didn't look at it closely, and now that I did, I'm sure that it isn't one. I thought the air scoop looked out of place!

Actually, guys .... it's a 58 Packard.

Note the wheel covers (red hexagon) and number of letters on the
hood (too few for S-T-U-D-E-B-A-K-E-R).

Yup. Dr. De Soto is right. That is a 1958 Packard and not a Chrysler product at all. That was the final model offered by Packard before they ceased making cars and it's essentially a Studebaker Hawk. Only the trim is different. A sad end to a famous make. Packard thought Studebaker would be a good company to merge with to give them some visbility in the car wars, but Studebaker was sicker than anybody realized and it ended up in bringing down Packard in 1958. Studebaker itself stopped making cars after the 1966 model year because there just wasn't money in the bank to create cars the public wouid want to buy.

That Packard Hawk is pretty rare. The company didn't manage to sell many of them. I've only seen one in a musuem.

That's not a Hawk. It's a four door sedan. But, yes, essentially a Studebaker. What a sad end for Packard (though I DO admire Studebakers...)

The 1958 Packard sedan was based on the 120½" wheelbase Studebaker President sedan. The rest of the Studebaker and Packard sedans, wagons and DeSoto-like hardtops were on a 116½" wheelbase.

There was a Packard Hawk for 1958. Why, nobody really knows.

When Studebaker and Packard merged no one knew how sick BOTH companies were. Studebaker production costs were way out of line with the rest of the auto industry while Packard, due to aging management in the 1940's, was years behind its competitors, Cadillac and Lincoln. Packard management wanted to update their 1941 bodies and sell them as 1950 models. They thought their straight eight would carry them on into the future. It gave the much maligned James Nance, Packard's new president, about four years to bring Packard from 1941 to 1955.

And both firms were stuck with aging, neglected assembly plants.

NICE looking family, in their up-scale Firesweep sedan!

The pic, 4-upwards, is VERY similar to a "MoPar" ad, (from 1959, iirc?)

If my memory is correct, the DeSoto had a crack in the block and water filled a cylinder and hydrolock the engine and it wouldnt turn over. It was fixed under warranty but my Dad would not have a car that had to be repaired so soon so it was traded in on the Chrysler. The chrysler got traded in on a 60 Matador which he had until about 66 when it started to act like the transmission was going out and he traded it in on a 64 T-bird. On a trip out of town the T-birds PB booster went out so OUT WITH THAT CAR and on to the next one, I think he switched to caddy's at that point and got a 69 convertible. That convertible stayed in "the family", I even owned it for 6 months around 1980, and is now owned by the husband of the daughter of one of my Dad's "practically family" friends. It's been parked since I sold it to that guy.

The 58 Windsor, above, looks like it has color-coordinated headlight 'doors'.

Did any of the design staff from Studebaker-Packard slideover to Mopar about this time ?

There is a link between the two cars.

William M. Schmidt was at Studebaker-Packard in the mid-1950's and had a hand in the styling of the Packard Predictor, the model S-P was showing as a possible theme for the 1957 Packards.

Shortly after Exner had his heart attack in late 1956, William Schmidt was hired on to head Chrysler Corp styling while Exner was on sick leave. Although Exner was back in the saddle by 1958, Schmidt remained until early 1959.

Given the timelines for styling approval and tooling, the 1960 models would have been approved in 1957.

Which I suspect also explains why the 1959 models were so un-Exner like.
