This car is already sold, but when I bought and resold it there was 2 feet of snow on the ground. Even I didn't know how good this car was going to be.

This has to be the best example of a Forward Look ragtop you will ever pull out of a junkyard, on the east coast at any rate - while it does show some frame rot, there is actually less welding in patching the two spots than there would be to put the X into another frame. Even after loading and unloading on a rollback, the passenger door opens and shuts like new. The left side rocker is a little weaker, you have to lift a bit to open the door. There is no rot at the rear spring shackles or in the trunk section of the frame rails. I've had hardtops with more rust than this has.

The trunk pan is toast, as is the gas tank, and the quarters rotted at the base of the "fin" on the top. But it still has a lot of the interior pans in it, I was able to tuck a bunch of Ford carbs in it to bring back and not lose any.

The fenders could probably be saved, too, they have very small rust areas at the bottoms. The tops are perfect.

This even had the keys dangling from the dash when I found it. It's missing a few trim pieces and the dual antennas are broken; under the hood no one's touched it since it was parked.

Oh yeah - it's a '58 Coronet Spring Special. 325 motor, torqueflite, PS/PB, I found what looks to be one original spinner cap in the trunk. Nothing too fancy on the options list, just your everyday late 50's ragtop. Good color combo, too, red and white. I guess in this case, it's faded to "resale salmon" ...

cheap and mirrormatic, thats a contradiction in terms insn't it? Jeff usually gets to that stuff before I do.

He's probably going to have some 58 Plymouth parts, I should have a '56 Plymouth ragtop coming, my other friend already has a '54 Plymouth ragtop in that is about the same shape as this car but was stored in a barn for years. Who knows what else, trying to get these passed on to good homes before they're all recycled into Chinese imports -

Rusty New yorker, just out of curiousity how much does a car like taht sell for, I am not asking you what you paid for it or what you sold it for, what I am asking is what is it worth on the open market. I would like to know in case I come across something similar sometime.

Boy - that side trim on the photo looks more like a 57 Dodge than 58 Dodge, can't see the grille so can't verify for sure but 58 narrow side trim ended about a foot ahead of the tail lights, and 58 Spring Special trim was much thicker than this one.

Boy, I thought the same thing about it appearing to be 57 Dodge-ish. Maybe someone along the line had access to 57 Dodge trim and maybe this car had seen some sort of wreck or something. These parts came available perhaps. Who knows?

Looking at the tail light bezels, they appear to be '58 style . I don't think the '57s had the notches in them - can anyone enlighten us ?

I've seen pictures of the interior of that car and it's got a '58 Coronet interior - no doubt about it. Everything on the car is '58 with the exception of the skinny lower trim on the quarters. But you never know with '58 Dodges, especially the spring trim; I wouldn't be surprised at all if that was original from the factory (or dealer) as it came in 1958. True, I've never seen one like it - but I would not be surprised at all if a customer said "I don't like the wide trim, can you put regular trim on it" or if somebody at the factory said "hey, before we start using the wide trim, I've got a ton of the '57 trim - let's throw some of that on." Ha! One escaped before Exner fired that guy. I guess stranger things have happened; the mint produced 1913 V nickels!

Yes, the taillight bezels are certainly 58, as someone could've preferred the 58 style.

It does scream 58 except for that side trim.

How did you find this thread?

BTW, this car has the 1958 dual headlights and thin front-surround moldings, and, the rarely seen Spring Special-painted
headlight doors.

The car was not OEM 'Crimson Red', originally, but probably the Spring Special 'Paris Rose', or, maybe 'Poppy Red'.

Its Coronet nameplate was installed on the front fender, behind the wheel opening, under the molding.

What is very unusual about this car is the absence of the S.-S. wide side moldings (each S.-S. trim piece was separately
available, so any particular car did not need to have any/many of those unique S.-S. parts on it).

What is also very unusual is that this car is painted in the "Saddle" style, where the second color is applied all along the
side of the car (as in 1957), but, the fins are also painted in that color.

It would be real-nice to see this car's Paint/Trim data plate and its IBM build card.

This car was 1-of-FEW built, in this scheme, that's for sure...at least, we know that it's not a D500 model (too).

I have too much time...nah that's not true.

Saddle painted cars in 58s didn't have fins painted same as lower body color, always upper. This car is Poppy Red, but odd to have a black and white interior instead of the coral color offered that went with Poppy Red.

You can see the holes for the wide license plate escutcheon.

Where do you see that it has the black and white interior?

As per Mike's comment, above, you can clearly see that this car has worn its "thin" side moldings since it left the factory.

I see the stainless steel trim above the upper tail light, so it never wore the spring special fin end caps. Here are a few images from the archives!

Thanks Mike. Ever noticed the space between the license plate escutcheon and the Dodge script. Factory SS cars had a larger space.

It is Poppy Red, a Spring Special 58 Dodge color.

The original poster hasn't logged on since 2008. I imagine he got his $2500 asking price. This is the same guy who found the rusted 58 Firedome Convertible now owned by parat11 on here.

Wow! I had not noticed that before. Good stuff, Matt. Dang it, now I have to fix the Gammel Dodge and my convertible (just kidding - what's done is done)! I thought those looked too close for comfort, but that was the factory hole spread for the non-spring cars! It looks to be maybe two or three inches further over to the right. Maybe we could add that hole template to the thread in the technical section!

The convertible looks like it is Poppy Red. The hardtop is Paris Rose - another spring color.

RustyNewYorker is a friend of Jeff Nichols, who sold the '58 DeS to Max, I think perhaps by way of Bo Malefors?
