Awesome, a "Ploto!" That is a very cool looking car...was that sold in Belgium or is it an import? I thought Plymouth-Desoto hybrids were only sold in Australia?

I thought Plymouth-Desoto hybrids were only sold in Australia? No, no. They were available through out the Western Europe (and for example South-Africa too) - alng with the Dodge Kingsways. We did not get the Regents, Mayfair etc. line Plodges. I have a '57 four door sedan (still dismantled in the back of the shed :() . There are a couple Diplomats in these pictures from last summer: http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=21805&... And here is one that I went to see some time back: http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=4212&p... Again, fine '59 wagon you have there. That really is a rare car. I have only seen one '59 Diplomat in person before (a 4d sedan once again). Edited by FinFury57 2009-01-30 9:57 AM

Posts: 19146 Location: bishop, ca | Clerbois, & Frederic, can you guys post some more images of your cars' interiors so that we could compare their appearances and conditions? It seems that the only major difference between you cars is the color of the dash uppe panel. The upholstery colors are probably the same style. It IS a small MoPar world, nowadays. Location: Bjorneborg, Finland | >>fabulous!! love the canadian crossbreds... I bet this Diplomat wagon came from Detroit, Michigan, US.. as most other export models OR an assembly plant in Antwerp, Belgium. Though, some 4-dr Diplos were assembled in Windsor, Ontario. There is also a '59 2-dr Wagon in Finland, but it's a Kingsway.. Edited by spinout 2009-02-01 8:10 AM

Kudos to you folks that struggle with your posts in English. We have plenty of folks here in the States that refuse to speak English ! Your efforts are a nice change of pace and add a little "flavor" to the mix. Most times it is perfectly easy to understand what you are trying to say. Thanks for the effort. Expert Posts: 1357 Location: Iowa USA | I took a look and I do not have a scan of the 59 Brochure on my computer and my literature is burried while I do some remodeling in my daughters room. Most of the Diplomats that I have run across were made in Detroit. Like the 58 Convertible here in Iowa was originally exported to Hawaii. The trim tag on the cowl will verify the location of manufacture. Both the wagons are rare and vary greatly from American models. We could not get 2 door wagons and the last 6 cylinder Desoto (other than fleet ordered cars for taxi service) was offered in 1954. In 1960 they switched to Dodge bodies until 1964 when the last export Desoto passenger car was offered. This 1959 is in South Africa and was probably shipped over CKD (Complete Knock Down) and assembled locally? My Diplomat was made in Australia and is a 56 but carries a 1954 body style. Extreme Veteran Posts: 384 Location: Hershey PA | This thread started in parts wanted as Clerbois was looking for a rear seat. Looking at the sales catalog (issued as export) for the 1959 Desoto Diplomat it shows these cars as being "commerical". Could this mean that there was no back seat? It looks like comparable pictures of the twins would help one another. The National Desoto Club has for a number of years been plotting the production of the 1959 models. We previously found one similar Diplomat (Desoto front clip/Plymouth rear) a 2 door hardtop in England that came ourt of the Newark plant. Hopefully the twins can find their respective data plates so we can plot the information as to plant of manufacture and date, options etc. Wouldn't it be something if they were made on the same day?

But since the Firesweep was built on the Dodge assembly line and was a 122 inch wheelbase car instead of a 126 like the upper models many of the parts are Dodge. As for the windshield, here it is! Veteran Posts: 116 Location: Durham,United Kingdom | Just found this thread 3 years too late. LOL I owned a RHD 59 Diplomat Coupe for 11 years from 1989 to 2000. It came off the Newark Delaware (USA) assembly line and it's tag was as a 59 Belvedere tag would be. (It's RHD 1957-8 Dodge dashboard is pictured above (Red and White)) The white 59 Coupe pictured above looks just like mine when I bought it and I honestly thought mine was the only RHD coupe in the world. The same models are used for the Plymouth (Savoy, Belvedere and Plaza)
As you can tell by the fins, the car of the topic starter as well as mine is a genuine DeSoto. I believe mine was also build in the Chrysler assembly in Antwerp Belgium and then sold in France. I still have my doubts if this was ever used as a hears, since the distance between the back of the front bench and the closed tailgate is too small to have proper room for a full size coffin. Expert Posts: 1819 Location: Vancouver, BC | This DeSoto was the 649th Plymouth / Kingsway / Diplomat 6 cylinder Wagon (Utility) built at the Lynch Road plant in Detroit. "6" would used for the Newark plant starting with the 1960 models and Lynch Road would become "1". The assembly plants for the 1959 model year (and only 1959) - 1 - East Jefferson Avenue, Detroit, Michigan 2 - Hamtramck, Michigan 3 - Evansville, Indiana (Last year - replaced by Valley Park / St.Louis for 1960) 4 - Los Angeles, California 5 - Newark, Delaware 6 - Lynch Road, Detroit, Michigan 7 - West Warren Avenue, Dearborn, Michigan (Former DeSoto body / engine plant) 8 - Valley Park, Missouri (Not opened until 1960 model year) 9 - Windsor, Ontario Although DeSoto Diplomat and US-built Dodge Kingsway models used Plymouth serial number prefixes, the model numbers were unique - MF1-L M - Model Year - 1959 F - Car Line - DeSoto Diplomat 1 - Standard Engine - 230-cid, six cylinder engine L - Series / Price class - Low Standard V8 engine was 318 engine (USA) / 313 (CDN) and used number "2" for the enginein the model number Price class / Series names - L - Diplomat M - Diplomat Deluxe H - Diplomat Custom P - Diplomat Adventurer The U.S. plant built Diplomat and Kingsway models as offered by Plymouth, thus the Diplomat Adventurer and Kingsway Lancer for the Sport Fury. The Canadian plant built only 4 door sedans for export - Plymouth Belvedere, Dodge Kingsway Deluxe, and DeSoto Diplomat Deluxe. The Dodge Kingsway was Car Line E. The last DeSoto Diplomat models were built in 1961. The DeSoto Diplomat name was used in South Africa for 1962, but the cars were imported as Dodge Darts and given DeSoto nameplates. Same with the DeSoto Rebel models which were imported as Dodge Lancers and given DeSoto Rebel nameplates.
