Member Posts: 35 | Hello knowledgeable Persons, I'm considering just going ahead and putting kits in both my trunnion joints when I swap transmissions. Looks like there are kits that year for small or large joints. I'm gonna assume that a strip-down 6 cyl. Plaza is going to be the small joints - am I correct in this assumption, anyone know for sure? Thanks in advance!

Exner Expert 10K+ Posts: 10179 Location: Lower Mainland BC | . Your Plaza will have front and read ball and trunion (or ball and pin) U-joints protected by a rubber boot at both ends. I believe that the PN for the boot kit in question is 1603 397 (or 1603397 (no space) when researching the internet. On that basis, here is one example of such a kit: https://www.hiltopautoparts.com/product/nos-mopar-u-joint-cover-fron... There might be cheaper alternatives out there. Member Posts: 35 | Thanks all. This should work, correct? https://www.moparmall.com/MoPar-PN-1603398-Ball-Trunion-U-Joints-p/8... I can't seem to find it now, but I thought I saw something where there was a different (larger) joint in some applications. Pretty sure mine is not.

Pretty sure mine is not. You might have found this post in which I documented three known sizes of 1950's Mopar ball and trunion universal joints. Your Plaza would have the smallest size (3.75") http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=71485&...

Member Posts: 35 | Thanks, as always, for the awesome info! Can you confirm (or opine) whether this is the correct service kit for the small joint? I'm pretty sure it is. Seems like my best bet price-wise: https://www.moparmall.com/MoPar-PN-1603398-Ball-Trunion-U-Joints-p/8... Thanks! P. S. - I LOVE BC!!! I've been there or through there several times. I wish I was there now, beautiful landscape! Are you near Vancouver, or further inland? Edited by Elmore 2024-06-01 7:56 AM

Seems like my best bet price-wise: https://www.moparmall.com/MoPar-PN-1603398-Ball-Trunion-U-Joints-p/8... You're welcome. I try to help. I have some resources and I know how to use them. And I am a "sharer" and former (in one of my lives) an educator. Back to the topic: *IF* a kit shows front and rear booted ball and trunion bits, it is for the smaller Ball and trunion. The larger ones only had one booted ball and trunion joint (at the front end of the driveshaft). The rear used a more conventional cross and ??? universal. As for Mopar Malls being a "Best bet price-wise", that sentiment if very rare. Typically people say they (Mopar Mall and Atlas Parts, etc. (all the same out of Temecula CA), a *VERY* expensive. Be aware that the big pins have to a) be pressed out of the drive shaft ends and b) have to be precisely installed (again with a press). Hope you have the factory service manual for the details on that. As for Mopar Mall's product code 817-051(X2)_E, I don't think that it relates to the OE service kit numbers.
