Veteran Posts: 137 Location: Davis, CA | hey everybody, I pulled apart some of the cooling system tonight. i pulled off the top hose, the bottom hose, temp sender, the top housing with the thermostat in it. When i pulled apart the housing, this is what greeted me. I have never seen a thermostat like this, is it just a really old one? maybe i'm just too young (25). there were no markings on it indicating what temperate thermostat it was. i thought it might of been installed backwards!was it installed backwards??? sorry for the blurry pics, best i could do. but check it out it has the mechanism and 2 springs on the hose side and basically nothing on the other side. I picked up a 190 thermostat at the parts store to replace it,, should i have gotten a 180 one instead? here are a couple pictures that will explain it better.

Expert Posts: 2011 Location: Ballwin, Missouri | Larry --- If that first picture is how the thermostat was positioned in the housing it was, indeed installed backward. The Thermostatic portion of the thermostat ( the part that senses coolant temp ) ALWAYS goes down or toward the engine water. It doesn't do any good to sense radiator water temp. Good Luck

Expert Posts: 4533 Location: Ripon, WI | Every parts store you go to nowadays recommends too hot of a thermostat because newer engines run better hotter. That is bs... our engines run better cooler. many of them, if they get to the 190 range start to get into the range that the cooling system can't recover from, and they run hot.
