What is a good LED to replace the 7" round headlights in my 56 Dodge???? I have been searching and found various answers, Sylvania L6024 seems to be a good headlight. 5400K Low Beam, 6300K High Beam, plug and play, no relays or additional wiring as the amp draw is considerably less as we know. No deeper than the original so it will fit in the bucket. But, I cannot get an answer if they have a problem with flickering.

Del: You might want to review the 2 pages of the LED headlight thread that I started a couple of years ago when I installed LED headlight bulbs in European H4 housings from California Imports (very inexpensive for the housings). They fit in the OE head light buckets quite well (no modifications needed with the bulbs I chose).

Good morning Dave, read your post and will probably follow your lead as I don’t like the looks of others.

Have you contacted Dan Stern Lighting yet? Automotive lighting engineer, Mopar enthusiast, outspoken curmudgeon, opinionated, extremely helpful, and I doubt there is anyone on the planet more knowledgeable about automotive lighting.

Good day fellows. I have not contacted Dan but will take a look. I am just researching LED bulb and have a question. From what I see other than watts, lumens and amps, there is also an rotational adjustment on some bulbs and others are fixed when you click them in place. Any ideas if one is better than another. As I recall there are adjustments within the headlight housing to adjust beam angles on the old girl. One of our local supplies has found a set of (2) Hella c/w halogen bulbs for me a t a good price. I will look at them this aft. If I buy them I will have two halogen bulb to give to some needy soul.

The Valio/Cibie headlights are the very best available on the market. I have them on my Saratoga with LED's and it's beating all the new cars. Serge was the first on this forum to install LED's and then Serge and I found the Valio headlights. Serge tested and I followed with the same set-up.

I have installed the 7" Valios on a '57 Chevy and the owner is extremely happy with them.

Merry Christmas to everyone who looks at this site. Help me understand something about LED lights. Headlights in particular. I have found the information on the incandescent 7" round headlights from years gone by. 1956 Chrysler, their 7" was a 5400 part nbr 1648.135, the first of the 12vdc sealed beams. I could not find the info on it but the next generation was the 6012 and one manufactures (GE) bulb current draw was 3.91 Hi / 3.13 Low at 12.8 VDC with a 3.27 ohm filament. Immaterial for this conversation. The next gen was the 6014, current draw 4.69, etc. Looking at LED bulbs to use as conversion it is extremely difficult to find a manufacture that states current draw. Using the formula of watt/volt = Amps a typical 60 Watt LED draws 60/12 = 5 Amps. Yes they put out a whole bunch more light so I guess the answer is...You don't get something fo nothing except a brighter cleaner light. Now from a user of Trucklite and his test of their 7" round tested current draw was 4.5 A Hi & 57.6 W and 2.5 A Low & 32 W. at 12.8Volt.

I'm Looking at using a Aukee H4, 9003 Hi/Low, 30 W/bulb, 6000 L/bulb, Voltage range 9 - 24, fan cooled. This bulb is plug & play, small enough to fit in the headlight bucket (shell) without having to butcher anything. Any suggestions on bulbs other than this that don't break the bank.

Well kick me in the pants and call me Bob. You finally forced me to search back on my eBay Purchases (which I dredded due to the $$$ that I have spent over the years) to see which set of H4 Led bulbs that I bought to run in my 56 Dodge with retro-fit H4 Bulb housings. Turns out it was Nov. 6, 2018 and it was these or equivalent (might be a different seller but everything looks very familiar, down to the box):

Del: Note the diameter of the hole in the back of the OE 56 Dodge aluminum headlight bucket is 2.5" (63.5 mm) whereas the diameter of the base of the LED bulbs that I am running is 52 mm. So lots of room. And the plugs are the same. Win Win.

I have had difficulty finding the Amp draw on LED bulbs as I try to find what I want to use in my Hella sealed beams when I toss the Halogen bulbs. Manufacturers seem to evade publishing that number. But I did find one today on Amazon.ca. DEAL AUTO ELECTRIC PARTS, Watts 29.5 =/- 3.5, Amp 1.3 -1.65. This is just interesting but not for any other purpose.

Oops, forgot something. Voltage range is 12 - 24 Volt. I would rather have something between 9 - 23 Volt.

Good morning and a MERRY CHRISTMAS to all.
Darn this Covid, most of my time is spent reading! The last few days I have been researching LED bulbs that I might use with my nice new Hella globes. What I have concluded is that most advertisements for bulbs overstate their performance. Mostly Lumens. When I see an ad showing 12,500 Lm I must question that data. So.. I looked up the data on the lighting in my 2016 Dodge Ram, Halogens. Data was not easy to find but the OE bulbs are just over 3200Lm. Then I tracked don the the bulbs in my wife’s Nissan Murano. LED’s. same thing, just over 3200Lm. So how do these other manufactures get so much out of theirs? By stretching the truth for the sake of being better than the competition. Amazon and eBay are just sellers so can’t blame them for misleading advertising. Now dig dealer, more expensive bulbs manufactured in North America are a bit closer to the correct output of their bulbs. But there are some sold on Amazon that are not misrepresented and once again our friend 56D500boy has done his homework. A bulb named “LED” and available on Amazon.ca at C$25.99 is a good as all the rest but their ad is showing a lower Lm rating and probably get pasted over for that reason. At this price I can take a chance and see how I like them!
