I ordered the build card for my car from Chrysler. What a nice service they have. You can watch the car building assembly line video and see how the card was used. It's amazing for the time to me.

Chrysler_Historical_Build_Record_Request.pdf (chryslerclub.org)   This is the form you send in to get your build card.

(113) Wishes on Wheels - Chrysler Forward Look - YouTube  This is the assembly line video which is really cool.

And this is the build card for my car.

Sam: Here is a slightly better version of your car's IBM card (for Igor (frwl) and/or Robert (RDP) to work from).

This one is 1280 x 720. The original pdf tp jpg conversion that I will send you is 7823 x 3533 - a bit big for most screens here.

Thanks Dave. This copy is really clear. Pretty cool stuff I think.

Hi Robert. The dealer was Plains Motor Company in Pampa Texas. Plains Motor Company was owned by Doc Pursley back then. He was my dad's uncle. My dad's aunt was the original buyer of this car and I still have the original sales receipt. I also have the Plains Motor Company / Pampa thing on the back of the car.

Wow, it must be a great to have a car in your family since new.
Plains Motor, DeSoto-Plymouth dealer at 113 N. Frost St. I heard about them, but I didn't have the dealer number. Thanks .

Previously, I thought that the 1956 LA built Dodge IBM cards were like the 1955 (and maybe 1956) Detroit built Plymouth IBM cards. To that end, I found a card and improved it for comparison purposes.

Maybe this will help you Sam.

UPPER ROW:

BODY TYPE 44 (or 344 as punched below) – it looks like Savoy V8 Series (4) Two Door Sedan (4)
COLOR 605 – Miami Blue (or 680 as punched below – Largo Green over Glades Green);
What exact color your car does have? Is it Single Tone or Two Tones Scheme?
TRIM 405 – Gabardine and Texture Glow Fabric; is it Green or Turquoise?

Next “3” to the TRIM 405 is a MOULDING PACKAGE 443. I see “MLDG PKG” lettering just below that includes:
Exterior Windshield Visor Trim
Front Door Finish Trim
Lower Quarter Panel Medallion
Drip Moulding Wide Trim

ROUTE 5 – Delivered by TRUCK!!!
MONTH 12, DAY 17 – Scheduled on December 17, 1954… while built on Dec 20 and shipped on Dec 21, 1954…

MIDDLE ROW:

381 – Front Air Foam Seat Cushion
398 – Radio
405 – Heater with Defroster
411 – Accessory Group 411 that includes: Rain Shields, Cigarette Lighter, Wheel Covers, Directional Signals, Glove Box Lock
513 – White Side Wall Tires

Serial Number 22195771 shows this car was built at Evansville Indiana Assembly Plant

I'll get the pictures and answer questions about all of the colors in a day or so. Will take me a few minutes. The car has been reupholstered and repainted but painted just like original. I have fixed up the inside and that is complete but the outside still has the 1973 repaint job and some rust holes. But it looks good enough to drive and when it's running, I enjoy driving it. I have pictures to post but I want to look at the original sales receipt to see the names of the colors of the original. So I'll be back with some verified information. Thanks for the clear card Dave and thanks for all of the information you guys have provided. Very interesting. I didn't know it was built in Evansville Indiana.

Here's the information on my car. It all is pretty much just like you said based on your review of my card.

It's a Savoy 2 door sedan with two tone paint. The body color is Tampa Turquoise and the roof is a dark green color. This was original color scheme and also how it was repainted in 1975 or so.

I redid the interior and it is pretty close to original colors but not exactly. I used a fuller fabric for the seats. The original upholstery colors were the turquoise fabric scheme like you show above. I have some of the original fabric that I saved when I reupholstered the car. I'm glad to have this color information you provided by the way. It came with a plastic type floor liner and I was going to reuse it so I very carefully took it out of the car and set it in the corner of the garage. A few months later, my wife decided to move it and folded it in half to do so and that is why the car has carpet now. The original floor was pretty brittle but it was near perfect until it was folded in half.

I took pictures of the trim package you showed and believe it is all there. You can see it in the pictures. I took a picture of the rear quarter panel medallion and it looks amazing because I got a NOS medallion in 2010 on Ebay for 25 bucks and just bought it for the heck of it. I have the other one and it is not nearly as pretty and the other side is not very pretty either. I'm just saying this because the outside of the car is not in real good shape but that medallion in the picture looks pretty good and the car isn't that good unfortunately.

It has the heater, defroster, cigarette lighter that still works, and radio that does not work. It is a V8 with a 3 speed manual transmission and no power brakes or steering.

My great aunt died and gave the car to my dad. He drove it for 4 years and then parked the car in the garage in 1977 and pulled the spark plugs with the intention of oiling the pistons. It's very humid where I live so the car degraded a lot while sitting there for 40 years. But it's almost a complete car so I was real lucky.

Here are a bunch of pictures and the original sales receipt.

Your car looks great! And with it's original 259 / 3 speed manual, it sounds like a lot of fun to drive. You can get reproduction stickers for the air cleaner on Ebay if you decide to restore it.

Sam: Thanks a lot for the pictures you posted!
All chrome trim mouldings are stand as they should!
The rear quarter medallion is magnificent!

So, now we know that the color code digits 6 – 8 – 0 are punched on the build card is more important than color code 605 printed at the top of it!
It is very interesting: why they did it? Why they’ve printed 605 and changed to it to 680?

From the trim code 405 we can figure out that is a GREEN Vinyl & Texture Glow Fabric; not a TURQUOISE!!!

One more question, please:

Your car has body type “44” printed at the top of card;
But actually it has a body type code “344” that punched below on it – I’ve highlighted it by red;
Could you post the image of underhood body tag?
It is located as on the photo you posted. It should be started at 344…

Thanks Nathan. I'll look into the reproduction air cleaner stickers. I have one I bought from Gary Goers a few years ago but haven't put it on yet. Thanks for the help you have given me to get it running. That's been a big help to me.

Thanks Igor, I'll go find and post that tag you showed and I'll also get out the original patches of fabric and take a picture and post that. I just want to make sure I'm seeing it right and telling you correct information.

Hi Igor.

Here's the picture of the plate in back of the engine compartment and also two pictures of my original upholstery that I used to make patterns. One upholstery picture has some fabric that is not sun faded so you can see the original color better. Both of the factory colors are sort of close to the same looking to me. But if you look at the part of fabric that never saw the sun, it is closer to the green than to the turquoise. I thought it was turquoise but can see that that is wrong now.

Regarding the colors, it really looks like turquoise on the fabric that went between the seats on the bottom of the picutre and the greener color fabric that went behind or under the seat on the right hand side of the picture. I wonder if they were using scraps for the underside....

Here are some more upholstery pictures. Due to the fading, I can't tell if original was turquoise or green but some of the stuff that was under the seat or in places where it couldn't be seen were definitely green.

Thanks for posting more images, Sam!
Looks like the body number on the firewall (112) is not match to the number printed (44) or punched (344) on the build card;
The letter “E” shows that body assembled (or equipped) at Evansville, Indiana;
Detroit-built bodies had not any letter after body number on the underhood plates;
Below the picture of Plymouth serial number listing, it’s a definitely Evansville-built car:

Yes, that’s true – originally it’s GREEN!
There are no other upholsteries available with Largo Green over Glades Green paint scheme 680!
Green only!
It says on the sheet of the 1955 Plymouth upholstery book

I might be slow to the party here but did just figure out that the 1955 Plymouth body numbers are directly related to the VIN number (which would make sense, I guess), i.e. body number 2771
vs the VIN that starts with 22 and ends with 771. I never noticed that connection before.

Another Evansville-built '55 Plymouth has VIN 20818120, but body number is 110-E-37502

Thanks for all of the information. I've learned a lot from this. Since the body number doesn't match the card right, does that mean this is not my card or that something is not right about the build data for my card? I don't think the front end of the car has been replaced.

No, they shouldn't match anyway. Your body tag tells you your car is the 1771st Plymouth 2 dr sedan to come off the Evansville assembly line. Your VIN is just a running number that counts all Plymouth cars from the Evansville plant.

Followed samsrader's link. Confused by VIN/Serial Number on the request form. I have the VIN, is the serial number the SO number on the data plate? I thought that stood for special order? Or are they saying VIN OR a serial number?

Danielle at Historical needs the VIN number (which is sometimes called the Serial Number). The number that is on the aluminum tag that is on the driver's door post.

An eight digit number like these (note they are called serial number by Mopar, but VIN by the DMV authority):

New “old” news:

Found this document in my database, that dated February 14, 1955 (Happy Valentine);
Irregular 1955 Plymouth Paint Codes (those are not started at 6xx)
It is not paint code 605, as I’ve assumed earlier: it’s a PAINT CODE 805 (!!!!!)
I’m confused…
Dave, Robert, Nathan… ANY THOUGHTS?

My guess is that 680 is the color code that Evansville was using for that combo, but that 805 was the code sent from the dealer order. Maybe they weren't coordinated yet for some reason? But I agree that it does look to be printed as 805, not 605. Maybe that's also the reason why the color & fabric book didn't include any color codes in it - because it wasn't fully standardized yet.

I've double checked everything against these paint codes and paint colors and I'm sure my car was originally painted to the 805 code. I always thought my car was turquoise but it is the Glades Green/Largo Green color for sure. Glades green looks like turquoise to me actually but I can see that it is more green than the turquoise.

The original interior colors were the Green texture glow fabric just like Igor said too. I can see it now that I know what to look for.

That little card is more valuable that you might think. I'm actually really happy to learn all of this stuff about my car...

Thanks to everyone!
