I'm searching for 1957 Dodge Paint. Both PPG and Axalta (Dupont) do not list paints back that far anymore and can't mix my colors, Turquoise and White. The Axalta guys say they can match a sample but I tried that several years ago and they missed it by a mile. About all I see on the internet is TC Global in California. They supposedly mix anything. I have read some reviews on them and customer service is really poor and some of the paint doesn't match. Has anyone used them on this forum, or do you have any other sources I could order paint from?

Old paint colours can not be made with new paints. End of story. A good scan helped me match my paint very well.

I got my paint from TCP global. I got the restoration shop acrylic eurethane.

The lady mixed up some 1960 FF-1 Willow Green and it looks great.

I spent a sh*tload of time trying to find someone who would even talk to me and mix something up for me and I didnt have the original paint(i talked to PPG/Nason, Dupont. Nason corporate pretty much laughed.. I have used the "paint reader" at a local paint shop(ppg) and it was crap... utter crap, after a couple times of shooting the paint i gave up, wasn't even close.
I actually bought a small scale car with that color and they were pretty much not interested in dealing with me at all.

A gallon kit for my custom mix was 250$, not horrible. I seems very similar to what Eastwood was selling? Maybe its Kirker, but who know who makes their paint,

Go check out my thread and you can see me painting results, so far i love it. Custom mixes are 250$ and a premix color is like 100$ a gallon a kit, thats cheap. I know paint "selling" is a racket, I can find someone selling a gallon for 1800-2500$ which is stupid and the guy selling it is laughing at suckers. Paint isn't rocket science.

there are only really 3 paint manufacturers in usa, Sherwin Williams, Dupont(Axalta) and PPG, BASF is german. Sherwin bought out Valspar.

Prospray is Valspar, Wanda is Akzo from netherland(sikkens)

I have heard issues with TCP global cans popping open because they drop them in transit... I opened my box and the can did have pretty good dent in the corner... i was like cmon, they should pack the boxes better but they seem to always replace it easily if it pops open. I dont need customer support. I think it does dry very slow, so kick your reducer up a full notch but i heard thats because its low VOC, which made it nice painting. I didnt feel i was going to choke to death when i get a wiff. You can tell the really nasty paint, this stuff isn't that. Im not saying breath it at all, i've failed when i smell paint, but sometimes i get in a hurry.

You can come up with paint charts on the internet that have numbers, but when you go to PPG of Axalta the numbers don't exist anymore or they have been reassigned to another color. PPG told me the tri 5 chevy group actually took this on as a project and spent the money to have all the 55-56-57 GM colors recreated exactly in modern base and clear. Oh well I like a challenge!

When I went in to Martin Auto Color, which sells PPG mostly, all they needed was the year, make, metallic or not (poly in the old charts means metallic), and letter code for the color, such as NNN, XXX, or WWW etc. That was it. They didn't use the specific number code because their database isn't linked up that way. From that info, they could mix up a new batch, but as stated, it won't be perfect because new paint colors aren't exactly the same as the old paint colors when they mix them. But it should be close that way anyway.

Are you planning to paint an entire car, or spot in some repairs or panels?

I ask, because I want you to have no expectations that brand new paint is going to look anything like the 1957 paint that you might be trying to match.

As said here, you have some options for getting a newer "version" of the color mixed up that will be pretty close, and you can also peruse the huge paint chip books to find something that looks like your color. There were some '70s vehicles painted a very similar turquoise, but not sure if that is close enough for you. Good luck!

Yeah I ended up just taking a turquoise and white part in and going through the modern color cards and matched it as best they had. I am doing the whole car so it will be close enough.

Has anyone used Eastwood products? Back in the day (80's) I used DuPont acrylic enamel with hardener. Now I want to do a single stage urethane. Factory paint code TT . This stock color seems close. At least for this job. All of the car will get color eventual, but want to be close since it will be piece-meal work.

My only criticism in watching it so far is that you should put a good epoxy primer sealer down first before you apply any filler. If you don't, as the paint gets chipped, scratched or wears and thins with time, it will let water through it eventually. If there is plastic filler in that region, it absorbs water well so that water will be distributed all across your fresh clean metal everywhere the filler is located, and start to rust your panel from underneath. It won't take much time from there before that entire area starts bubbling out and the filler falls out leaving a rusted area. But seal the metal first, and the water absorbed by the filler won't rust your panel so it will remain in good shape for a whole lot longer. I haven't found any adhesion issues with putting filler over epoxy primer sealer either. But I have seen many, many long term issues with putting filler over bare metal.

Another thing I do is to use a large ladle to carefully scoop the paint out the cans. I hate spilling expensive paint and I like to keep the cans cleaner because I may come back to them a year or two later.

I don't apply filler over primer either, a chip wont make it down to metal and should be addressed and it wouldn't be able to get beyond the paint and primer down to the metal. Maybe if you shoot the car with a bullet

I also use the pourable paint lid spout, no mess and i can reuse easily.

the worry about sealing the metal before applying bondo is if water comes in behind a welded area but you should make sure there is no entry point to behind the body and rustproof also.

Ive never seen paint wear through the uppercoats down into the bondo. If its done that, the car is already well beyond gone.

If you leave a scratched car in the weather/rain that made it into the bondo without addressing , you obviously aren't worried about the car

So that sealer over bare metal is to me a unnecessary step.
