A newbie to the forum here. I’ve been a Mopar nut my whole life and recently caught the wing car bug. I picked up my first piece of Virgil’s art and have a funky fender tag I need help breaking down. The car is either a 57 or 58 Coronet. The core support hood and grill are missing but it has a 354 short block under the hood. The body code on the fender tag is only three digits long and I’m not sure what to make of it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am certainly not an expert but based on what I can see from that very small photo (you can up load photos up to 250Kb, i.e. 1024 x 768 is better), I would have to guess that a) the car is likely a 1958 because the 1957s had four digit body codes and b) it was built in/around Oct 1957 (as a 1958).

If there is anything left to indicated how many headlights there were and it shows 4 then you are for sure looking at a 1958.

Regardless, a 354 was a Chrysler engine, not a Dodge engine. 1957 was the last year that Dodges had double rocker (wide) heads (i.e. hemis) until 1964. And those engines were 325s and were stamped KD 500 - 1nnnn. There were a few 57 Dodges that got 354s but they would be in four digit code bodies and were called D501s.

In 1958, the double rocker Dodge engine was no longer available so a 354 definitely is out of place as a factory engine. It could have been added after the car left the factory.

I can't really read the cowl tag that well other than I think I see 293 at the left side. 293 = Torqueflite transmission (cast-iron A-466).

Post a better photo of the tag and some photos of the front and rear of the car.

This is the best I can do with what you've posted:

Thanks so much for the help. The serial number on the engine comes up as a 57 poly but it has been converted to a hemi at some point. The body code is 332, that’s the main part of the tag I’m curious about. I’ll try to upload a better pic. Thanks again.

Again, I am not the expert (that's LD3_Greg, Lancer Mike, Chrycoman and lately frwl (Igor)) but in the meantime, I do know how to use the search function and cut and paste. That lead me to these:

Chrycoman - 2017-07-23 3:47 PM
Body - 333
3 - Dodge
3 - Coronet V8
3 - 4dr Sedan

and

Lancer Mike - 2015-05-16 8:25 PM
BDY 362 = Dodge, Custom Royal, Lancer Coupe

and in response to a 335 tag:

Lancer Mike - 2019-12-05 5:22 PM
it appears to be built on or around April 16, 1958, Hamtramck, Dodge Main Dodge, Coronet, Lancer Convertible

And in response to a 363 tag:

Chrycoman - 2018-08-07 8:43 AM
363 -
3 - Dodge
6 - Custom Royal
3 - 4 door sedan

So based on those four, I have guess that your 332 = 1958 Dodge, Coronet V8, 2 dr Lancer (hardtop). *BUT* I could be wrong.

Greg? Mike? Bill?

Right on. So it looks like 1958 cars have a 3 digit body code rather than a four digit like the 1957s?

Apparently. And for some reason, no one seems to have fully documented the 58 Dodge codes.

For the 1957 Dodges, I built on info from LD3_Greg to do a visual body code documentation on the 57 Dodges (first credit goes to Greg and Neil Vedder (RIP)).

The non-D500 57 Dodges:

http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=74413&...

The 57 Dodge D500s:

http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=74433&...

And as they are discovered:

*SOMEBODY* should do the same for the 1958s. (I hope that is NOT me!)

Supposedly there are only 15 (not 19 like 1957) different models. How hard could it be??

Okay. My bad. I should have included frwl (Igor) as one of the experts. Sorry. I won't let that happen again.

Two things

1. Neil Vedder once said in reference to a 58 Dodge 2dr hardtop with a 352 code:

d500neil - 2013-06-14 1:12 PM
Juha, the 1958 V/8 Coronets have BDY codes of 33X....the Royals are 35X.
In your car's case, the third digit is a "2", so that confirms the 2-door hardtop models.

So that fits with what you are saying above. I also found a 333 code that Chrycoman confirmed as a 4 dr Coronet sedan. Again, fits in your list.

2. I am pretty sure that if you find a 58 Dodge IBM card, the transmission column will be 32 so 322 = Powerflite, 323 = Torqueflite, etc. And through the magic of a Dodge engineers mind, these become 292 and 293 on the cowl tag.

Found already: Transmission code is a 293 (29x)…
Also:
BODY CODE 352 = Royal Lancer 2 Door Hardtop – it is confirmed with lettering BLACK ROYAL in the right lower corner of the sheet…
Don’t understand – why is it Black? The paint code shows same colors as on the example above…

Yikes. From that photo, it would appear that the car is sitting on the ground (not on its wheels). That will mean rot in the floor and trunk pans (all fixable) BUT ALSO frame rust/rot. That is a death knell. (Sorry)

You might want to walk (RUN!!?) away.

Ya, I think it’s more of a project than I want to tackle as far as restoration goes. It will end up being used for parts. Thanks again for all the help with the tag.

If it is a 1958 Dodge (which it is), it is a car worth saving!  Here's all my information on codes (see attachment).

Disclaimer - my list is a work in progress!  Some information in there may be conjecture, particularly the TRM codes...

Thanks for that additional info Lancer Mike. What’s the interchange between 2 door an 4 door cars? I assume the doors are different... maybe I find a decent four door as a donor???

Basically, they used the same front clip.  However, the bodies of two doors and four doors are really different: there are no easy exchanges.  The green house is different, the roofs are different, the rear quarters are different, the doors are different.  Inside, the dashboards are the same, but there are a bunch of differences rolling back from there.  Thank goodness, drivetrains and frames are the same for Dodge, for everything except the convertible, which means the floor pans and trunk pan should basically be the same.  Long story short, there are a lot of parts you can use, but you are best off getting a parts car that is a coupe, if you can find one.

Got ya. That’s what I was afraid of, I have a 68 Polara 2 door that’s in the same boat. Luckily it’s in nearly perfect shape so I shouldn’t need a parts car :).
