Is pts. a pint. And why the don't use qts. instead?

Location: Newcastle Australia		This came up as a trivia question many moons ago.
The answer apparently relates to how the liquids are sold.
Fuel was sold by the gallon.
Oil was sold by the quart.
Transmission fluid was sold by the pint.
Well at least that is the answer the organisers claimed was correct.

I've never seen ATF sold in less than quart containers but I believe they express the capacity in pints because a lot of transmissions take less than even quarts.

Location: DFW, TX		It is important that you do not overfill an automatic transmission. Maybe they are being very specific about measuring in smaller units to make the reader more careful?
