New User Posts: 2 | Hi I have a customer that we are restoring a 1950 Dodge pickup for. He purchased a 1955 Super Red Ram hemi for it that he is having built to make 300hp. His truck is originally a 3 speed fluid drive transmission. He was reading about fluid drive transmissions and decided he wants to find and use a M6 transmission. He asked me to come on here and find out if we can bolt a M6 transmission onto his 270 v8? He also wants to keep it how you shift it on the steering column. If you have any thoughts or info on how this can be done it is greatly appreciated

Also, the transmission would take the fun out of having 300 hp. I know this isn't the kind of "help" you're looking for, but I think he would be really underwhelmed by the transmission if you got the two together. Edited by jboymechanic 2017-12-18 11:43 AM

Extreme Veteran Posts: 406 Location: Hilltown, PA | I had a customer with a 1950 Desoto with a fluid drive and tip-toe shift. I don't know if this is the same trans set-up you are discussing, but if it is I can say that while it was an interesting arrangement, and worked OK once I got it sorted out, I would certainly never take the time to install one where it wasn't originally. I agree that it would totally eliminate any "fun factor" associated with a high HP engine. In a period correct car it is an interesting and sufficient driveline - I would think behind something modified it would become a liability and an annoyance. Gregg

Elite Veteran Posts: 1102 Location: Hayward, Calif | I agree with the rest of these guys. If you can get it bolt up to the 270 he will be disappointed in performance. The M-6 is a 2 speed trans with a overdrive in each gear. 1stspeed is extremely low geared, good for pulling stumps out on the farm. The 53 Chry was the last year to use that fluid coupling/M6 set up. It was great for Grandma to cruise around and not have to shift gears. Jerry

New User Posts: 2 | I'm not too crazy about trying to figure it out something weird myself. He mentioned someone told him to use a 3 speed manual out of a 1970 dodge. Do you know what is involved in putting that on a 270 and keeping the 3 on the tree?

Elite Veteran Posts: 888 Location: Peoples Republic of Oregon | A '70 Dodge 3-spd 'could' be used if you can find a 57-60 bellhousing. Right approximate depth for the longish input shaft. Some of the bells have bolt pattern for both the L6 and the V8, makes it easy to identify. Send a PM with an email address if you want a pic of one. Call Wildcat auto wrecking at 503.668.7786 or Big M auto at 530.473.2225 Be sure to identify which flywheel was used with the bell...146 tooth vs 172 tooth.
