Now that my 56 Dodge generator is generating and my car (and I) is out and about , I will need to lock it. I can lock the doors but not the trunk. No keys.

I assume that I will have to remove the lock cylinder (somehow) and take it to the same shop who did my ignition and door lock.

BUT I am not 100% clear as to how I remove the trunk lock cylinder. I have the sneaking notion that I have to remove the trunk (aka "deck lid") latch to access the cylinder. And I don't want to unnecessarily open up another can of worms.

This is what the cylinder looks like (apparently, according to Mopar Mall):

PN 1455 721 (55-56 Dodge, Desoto and Chrysler)

There is a clip that goes in the notch at the key end. Look for it.

Thanks Marc for that and the links. Do you think it is necessary to remove the trunk latch to remove/install that clip?

No just pull the clip and the lock should pull away from the 'latch'.

Dave if you remember I'm a locksmith, and can make keys for the lock if you can't find anyone in Vancouver to do it for you. http://www.acmesafe.ca
You may or may not be able to get at the clip without pulling the latch off. Either way, there are not usually any issues when removing either one of these items.
I do have a complete cylinder and keys like your old one for sale.

I was able to remove it very easily from my '56 Plymouth so I don't expect you to have any trouble. Just use a pair of dykes to grap the clip and pull on it, if you know what those are.

Ian, my issue is with matching the glove box to the trunk. Are you able to convert one to match the other? If so, which is easier to change, the trunk or the glove box? What about the ignition or the doors? I assume that to get a key made for a lock that I would need to ship my lock to you. Is that right or is there a code listed somewhere on the lock? What kind of old style keys do you have available? The newer '60's door keys that most people say will work in our cars do work in the ignition, but they don't work in the doors because of a change in the shank recess. I had to purchase a bunch of old keys from a warehouse because no one was willing to stock the proper keys.

I know what a "dyke" is but not in the context of pulling on a clip. Usually they have hairy legs and pits and wear socks in Berkenstocks and listen to KD Lang and Melisa Etheridge.

How would two of them help me pull the clip?

Maybe a lot of them bite their nails, and their fingers are stubby and strong and used to working in blind holes, so they could pop that clip right on outa there . . . ???

Thanks Marc for that and the links. Do you think it is necessary to remove the trunk latch to remove/install that clip?

UPDATE: I bought a compatible trunk lock with two keys from Ian Smale (imopar380 from here). I think it took a only day to get to me via Expedited mail.

Lock arrived in the mail just before lunch. After lunch I went out to the 56 Dodge and using a big BIG screw driver, pried off the old clip (it let go with a BANG) and removed the old lock. I've now temporarily installed the new lock (no gasket at the moment), with the clip. Works. Didn't even have to swap the paddles. BUT I was surprised that I needed to turn the keep 360 Degrees to disengage the paddle/lock the trunk. Interestingly, no rust damage in the lock hole. Same shape as when the car left the factory. Yippee.

Now to find/make a gasket and get my NOS Diamond-head DPCD key (from Jesser's Classic Keys) cut to these new trunk lock keys.

Thanks again Ian.

PS: Ian says "The reason it needs a full turn is that the lock is a pin tumbler lock and there is only one position to remove the keys where the pins line up, just like a house lock. You always have to remove the key in the same position. The scratches on the button were there when I acquired it."

(I will use a points file to smooth out the minor damage (previous plier job - not Ian's) on the push button)
