Elite Veteran Posts: 667 Location: Frederick, MD | Is there any way to determine the build date of a '55 Plymouth? Neither the body tag under the hood nor the serial tag on the door frame have a build date. Mine is serial 20816283 and from what I've found online is that it should be an Evansville car and in the later part of the production run. I need to get a new synchronizer for the transmission. The parts book shows a changeover on 16 August 1955. So, I don't know what to buy as I have no idea when my production date was.

Typically there is a four digit SCHD (Scheduled build date) on the body tag, e.g. 0831. Your VIN number is very late in the Evansville series for 1955 so I would think that you are past the change over date (BUT that is just a WAG). Expert Posts: 1819 Location: Vancouver, BC | 307-E 5821 The 307 is the model number of your car, E for the Evansville body and 5821 is the sequential production number for bodies built for model 307 at the Evansville body plant.. Plymouth started using body tags later than the other divisions and I am not sure if Evansville ever did. The Evansville body plant was small (built by Graham-Paige in 1927) and bodies had to be shipped out from the Mack Avenue body plant to have enough bodies for final assembly. That was the main reason why the Evansville plant was closed and a new plant built in St.Louis. Evansville could not build all the bodies needed for production and there was no enough property to expand the plants. The last 1955 models were built in August,1955 and 1956 production started in September. Looked in the parts book and they list a different countershaft gear that changed around August 16, 1955. No changes to the synchronizers. There is more precise information given to identify the which unit changed - the ID stamping on the transmission. These numbers and letters are stamped into the transmission and not cast. The early part number, 697 823, was used with transmission 1322 758 stamped with the letter K. This was used up to August 16, 1955. After August 16, 1955, part number 1633 761 was used intermittently with transmission 1635573 stamped with the letters CK. So check the transmission casing for the above numbers and letters. That should take you in the right direction.

Elite Veteran Posts: 667 Location: Frederick, MD | I looked at the transmission and did not see any stamp on it. I saw what might have been faint traces of white paint on the driver's side of the case. However, I don't know if the stamps were paint stamps or stamped into the metal.
