Hi, all.

I really feel stupid for not figuring this out, but it's driving me crazy! I'm doing a suspension rebuild and disc brakes on my '57 Savoy. Finally got it all cleaned, new bushings installed, new ball joints, etc. - all ready to go back together. For the life of me, I cannot get the upper control arm bumpers in. Please - someone tell me there is a trick to doing this.

Thanks for your input!

Daryl

the upper has a hole, most "new" bumpers used are bolted in but the originals just popped in.

If your trying to reuse the original bumper you better lube it up to push it through the hole.

Use some gear grease?

Spray it with Windex as a "lube". It dries fast and the residue is soluable in water.

Thanks for the input. I was using dish soap. The rubber keeps deflecting when i try to get it through. Other thoughts and suggestions?

Thanks!

Didn't do it with one of these but I busted a knuckle trying to put something similar in a nice tight hole like that. Anyway, if you can understand my crude arthritic drawings. I took a long peice of threaded rod witha large washer and nut at one end. Slid the bushing down against the washer. The rod was smaller than the shaft that would later go through the bushing. I put the rod through the hole where I needed the bushing to go and then slid a u-shaped plate with a hole down over that until the ends butted against. I then put a nut on that end of the rod and started tightening with a little silacone and wiggled as I tightened and it popped right in.

If that helps or even makes sence?

Later,
Karl.

Thanks, Karl. I appreciate your input and drawing!

I like your idea, but my control arm bumper is solid so I can't get a threaded rod through it. I'm open to any additional ideas, though!

Thanks,

Daryl

I bought new nylon bushings for my 57 wagon. They have a stud on the bottom that bolts right through the hole. Easy peasy. The upper snubber is the same.

yeah new ones have bolts, get one off rock auto or summit for like 7$. I know some were press in but the part catalogs from the factory show bolted bumpers. These cars use those bumpers... every time you jack the car the suspension sits on the upper.
