Rebuilt 413 with around 500 miles on it, recored radiator, and all things new involving the cooling system. The temp gauge needle hovers slightly to the right of center at cruising speed. With the air conditioning on and or in stop and go traffic, the needle goes to the highest point on the normal range. The radiator cap hasn't released any coolant, but that gauge worries me. With the radiator cap removed, I stuck an accurate thermometer and air conditioning on the temp was right at 180 degrees which is normal. The gauge was showing about 3/4 range. Its got me concerned on what the temp is in heavy traffic with a.c. on with the ambient temp being over 90. Is there a way I can check this temp? I don't have an infrared thermometer. I'd hate to overheat this new engine.

Infrared thermometers are $20 now, Go get one. Drive on a hot day, Let it idle a bit and check temp at thermostat area and inlet to radiator. See what you get and report back to us.

Report! After 20 minutes of idling with air conditioning on, 90 degree day, and a lap around the block, the highest temp I could manage to record at the radiator top tank was 195. The dash gauge was showing it being at the end of the normal and into the hot range.

No water spewing out? Radiator cap ok? You should be fine.

Negative to both. I'm going to check the bulkhead connector for corrosion and maybe I can get this old gauge to read a bit more accurately.

Mount two nuts on the threaded stud on the sender and carefully turn it a Little. Clean all Contact Surfaces and try again.
If the gauge still reads too high, then the sender is not the correct type, or the voltage limiter faulty.
If all other gauges reads normal values, then the voltage limiter is good.

You can correct the too high Reading by adding a small resistor in line.

Since the voltage limiter seems to be okay and the sending unit if fairly new, I willl need to find a resistor that puts the gauge into a more normal range. Water doesn't boil under 16psi until it reaches about 260 degrees. Is it safe to say that once I see,a reading of 180 on the radiator top tank, the gauge needle should be at its midpoint?

that water temp isn't bad, I typically run Red Line water wetter though.

At what temperature would it actually start to run hot? Trying to get everything dialed in with this gauge.

That depends on your radiator cap - http://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/boiling-point-water-d_926.html

Thanks! A 3 ohm resistor seems to have solved the problem

Congratulation "plymouth". You just found out the value I noticed in an older thead:

I wrote: "The serial  resistance value I added is 3.3 Ohm (0.3W), for 80% reading at standard running temperature.  - SERGE - "

This is not philosophy, but physics!  - SERGE -
