Elite Veteran Posts: 769 | SavoyPlaza - 2018-12-27 6:06 AM Very nice! She looks ready to go. Not only heater delete, but cigarette lighter delete as well! What are your plans for her? Pete My original thoughts was to use the rust free fenders and hood on one of my furies. Then replace the fenders and hood with body worked ones. I have a rebuilt 61 361 hp motor with sub frame and was thinking going with the black and white police car theme. Or leaving the 6 and going the yellow cab route OR red with Fire Chief theme OR the Dept of the Navy car that it originally was. The 6 runs pretty well and moves along much better I thought it would.

Elite Veteran Posts: 769 | Here is a link to the Mare Island Naval history museum where this Plymouth was some sort of fleet car? The museum is located in Northern Calif. Vallejo. If you haven't ever been there I can highly recommend a visit. There is on display vintage machinery,Cold War era, old signs, pt boats, weapons, etc. You can still freely tour the base and view the housing, bunkers, etc. http://www.mareislandmuseum.org/

Expert Posts: 1819 Location: Vancouver, BC | Actually this car is not delete anything. Back in those days heaters, radios were optional, thus if you did not specifically request a heater or radio, you got neither. So this car is heater and radio optionless. Also, the cigar lighter and the rear door arm rests were optional on the Savoy. No sure what the wheel covers are. The only option on the car appears to the Torqueflite transmission.

Elite Veteran Posts: 769 | Looking at this 61 today in the yard today. Just thinking of what direction to go with this one. The body is very straight and solid. The only rust I found was on the bottom of the back window and the trunk lid lip has a few bubbles. The 6 runs extremely well. The interior has be redone in two tone blue, but not very well. It's a comfortable and clean interior. Everything works except the speedo. My first thoughts are to use the solid clip on one of my 61 furies and I have another savoy clip that needs a few repairs, but will be a good replacement clip. From there I was thinking of the possibilities with this one. Keeping in mind I don't have much of a budget for this one, It will be more of what I call a restify than a restoration. There is not much trim or options on it so it should not be that difficult or expensive to do. (A) Police car black and white with a rebuilt 361 HP motor and restored sub that i already have ready to go. I also already have a vintage siren and Motorola CB. (B) Taxi cab yellow leave thie 6 ,Add a fare meter, and vintage taxi cab roof sign. (C) Red fire chief car with the 6 or the 8cyl (D) Dept of the army olive drab. I used to have a 64 ford 4dr original army car (E) Dept of navy car of which it originally was. I dont really know what it looked like back then. (F) Just leave the way it is and don't fool with it. (G) Other Which of these would you choose if it were your choice? Edited by Apollo 61 2019-01-02 10:29 PM

Elite Veteran Posts: 1172 Location: Georgia | Ah, what to do with a rust-free running 1961 Plymouth sedan. Probably the best route would be to just send it to Georgia here and that way she wouldn't interfere with your hardtops! ha ha Personally, I'd go back to Navy attire. It would probably take a little research to find out the color scheme--I am assuming the data plate would show a 999 trim, like my Air Force wagon, which denotes a special order. Those wheel covers on her currently appear to be mid-1960s Chrysler caps, if I'm not mistaken. Pete

Location: Parts Unknown | Original Navy - keep the history, or Don't mess with it, ... also keeping it closer to its historic roots. Some of my deepest regrets in this "thing" we do are not saving or altering historically interesting cars, just because they weren't what the hobby deems desirable or "sexy". I still suffer from that mentality - it is ingrained - but when everybody is doing the sleek and sexy, the other kinds of cool gain a lot of "punch" for not just being another one of the typical. Nice find.

Elite Veteran Posts: 769 | I forgot to ask the second owner if he had any back in the day photos of the 61 on the base. I looked at the data tag and I did not see any 999 code on it? I was looking for any early 60s navy fleet car logos and could not find any. This jay Leno 61 dodge CHP video looks very interesting https://www4.bing.com/videos/search?q=jay+leno+1961+dodge&view=detai...

Location: Parts Unknown | In a recently posted photo in the old photos and postcards album there is a 57 Chevy wagon, plated to the USMC. It is typical of USN/ USMC vehicles of the period .... fleet strippers in a deep blue paint. ======================== (57chevUSMC.jpg) Attachments ---------------- 57chevUSMC.jpg (227KB - 186 downloads)

Expert Posts: 2905 Location: little rock, AR | I had a '61 2dr Belvedere that I sold to another member. '61's are getting tough to find in any condition. I have a couple of parts cars but don't ask for HL rings. lol I drive a 4dr sedan car and get a lot of attention. The attention I get maybe because its windshieldless car. lol I also have a couple of 2dr HT cars that I've never driven. Long live '61's and flatheads and /6 cars. Not everything has to be a big V-8 with a lot of horsepower. Pete you need to sell that ragged 2dr, /6 wagon. lol

Elite Veteran Posts: 769 | I've located some 1961 diamond E government issue California plates and I have a set of 1961 US forces in Germany plates. The original color is baby blue. I want to get a set of poverty caps. The only option I can see the car has is the auto trans. Found this 57 Chevy pic while searching for military fleet pics Attachments ---------------- image.jpeg (115KB - 204 downloads) image.jpeg (173KB - 192 downloads)

Elite Veteran Posts: 769 | Old wood, I have 4 61s and barley have enough headlight rings to make one passable set. The good news is there going to repop them. I haven't seen one yet. They will ready in a couple of months. I will send you a pm with a parts wish list.

Location: Parts Unknown | Many years ago, Widdo Bwudder and I stumbled onto a property along the old highway south of Yakima that was covered in 50's military fleet cars. A dozen, maybe more. Showing just how stupid our mentality was back then, we were bummed that these were strippers and had no "sexy" parts to snag. It was odd to find so many in one location like this. Wish I had taken photos !

Expert Posts: 1207 Location: Ponder, TX | While military fleet vehicles were mainly strippers, there were some that defied logic. I think it was 1974 or 1975 and car sales were way down. GM offered to sell the government all kinds of cars and trucks for pennies on the dollar if they would take existing stock from the acres and acres of unsold vehicles. The electric shop at McChord AFB, WA was one of the shops that got a new truck to replace an ancient step-van. It was a standard cab Chevy half-ton step-side with the Silverado trim package and a 454 engine with automatic. It was a flight line truck that spent 99% of it's time at 15-25mph, so it was always out of tune, mostly because the plugs would foul badly. Instead of turning it in to the motor pool, once or twice a week we would request clearance to make a high-speed run down the runway to blow it out. That was usually all it needed to run okay for a while. That said, I'm quite sure that some crews requested a high speed run more often than needed, as it was great fun to wind out the big engine. The one time I rode with my boss, he got it up to near 90.
