Hey there Rocky Mountain Forward Lookers,

Heading to Kremmling, Colorado in the 300-G. Coming from the east on I-80/76. It's going to be a Friday afternoon (hopefully not too late) so I was scoping out US 34 as an option instead of going through Denver. I realize that goes through urban areas, too. Looking for some advice on how US 34 rolls through Greeley, Loveland, etc. and if that's a good option. Also, if there are any major construction projects or anything going on that might cause problems. We've had this car on US 34 (or maybe it was 14) west off of I-25 many years ago, so I sort of know what I'm in for in general. Thanks!

Hi, Andy:

Sounds like a fun trip! So if you take 34 I think it takes you through Estes Park, Rocky Mountain National Park, Grand Lake, Granby then on 40 to Kremmling. That's a nice way to do it! Things get a little slow through Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park with all the visitors, but that's ok - you want to see the sights. The G can stretch it's legs a little through the Big Thompson and on 40 to Kremmling. Even though it is a little bit longer than 1-70 - that's the route I would take - much prettier.

Cool, thanks, Lancer Mike. Always looking for a non-Interstate route, though we'll be looking to make time across IL, IA, and most of NE. Forward looking to get back to that pretty country!

Good for you, Andy. A few things you may want to make time to see: The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park - could be a good lunch stop. Make sure to take a half-hour to hike Rock Cut at the top of Trail Ridge Road. You can step out of the car, stretch your legs along a short path and climb an easy rock formation. On top of the rock formation is a brass disk. Look over the disk and the pointer identifies every mountain you can see and the elevation! You'll love it.

On the far side of Trail Ridge Road, still in RMNP, is the Coyote Trail (right side of the road as you are driving) - a meadow trail that's very nice. It goes quite a ways, so you can walk as long or short as you like. Also, the Tonahutu Trail (left side of the road) is cool - a woodland hike that gets you to the edge of Tonahutu Creek. That one might take an hour to get to the creek and back.

As you exit RMNP, the Grand Lake Lodge is a fun place for a quick visit or meal. The Town of Grand Lake and the public beach are a must see. Another quick hike on the east end of Grand Lake is Adams Falls. A 30-minute hike takes you up the east inlet to Adams Falls and back or you can hike a bit further to the meadows. Rock Cut and Adams Falls are two quick and easy hikes that are totally family friendly and fun. Definitely recommended.

Make sure to take some pictures and post 'em here!

Great stuff! I've been in the area a few times over the years, but i don't think I've done any of your recommendations. Thank you!

My pleasure, Andy! A few of the other RMR people will probably chime in on their favorite haunts. The Stanley Hotel has a Stanley Steamer right in the lobby. The car and the hotel founder are one-and-the-same! It is a must see as well as the historic Grand Lake Lodge. I would send you to the C Lazy U Ranch, but that is a bit out of the way on your trip to Kremmling. Let's see what others come up with!

Wow, that's a solid-looking G!

Anyhoo, we had to cancel the trip due to a death in the family. We are not rescheduling since we were going there to attend a wedding. May see you next year if we drive to the 300 Club International meet in California. We have done that before. Thanks again.
