Expert Posts: 1497 Location: Fairfax, Minnesota | 1. Can someone help with determining what versions of the 59 Dodge 383 were available? 2. Are these differences reflected in engine casting numbers-or any other place on engine? 3. Were there any differences in the internals - valves, cam, compression, etc? Thanks Edited by Ray 2014-09-25 12:53 PM

Expert Posts: 1506 Location: Colo Spgs | Hola Ray 1. As you know there are two 1959 MoPar Engines with a 383 Cube. The one that lasted to the end of The 1971 Production Year has a Machined Pad next to The Distributor ...and it has The ID Stamping there. 2. The same as #1. **** Engine Casting Numbers can be thought of as Surnames such as Smyth, Johns, Campbell or Dowling. It is The Engine ID Stamping that truly means something. **** 3. Every "baby 413" ( aka RB 383 ) - 413 - RB 426 ( wedge ) or 440 all use a Head Assembly -- Exhaust Manifold --- Cam/ Timing Assembly ---- Water Pump Assembly ----- Oil Pump from a 383/ 361 Engine. Expert Posts: 1497 Location: Fairfax, Minnesota | Now that you all agree that the 59 Dodge 383 was a "B" engine... Did the 2 bbl have the same cam and piston/compression as the single 4 bbl and dual 4bbl? Were the D500 engines specified on the pad?

Expert Posts: 1506 Location: Colo Spgs | Hola All A 1959 Parts Book shows that all "common" 361 - 383 and 413 Engines used The Same Cam Shaft Assembly. If the Engine was a "Performance Version" of the above --- They had a Cam Shaft for them The 2-4 Bbl Engine's all used a "Solid" design, and it is The Third Parts Number for 1959's. d500 4 bbl 383 should have the .430 lift 268 duration 48 overlap cam and as far as i know dodge used special (unique) HOLLEY carburetors, not carters like plymouth and desoto, at least in 1960. the 2bbl 383 got the .389/252/30 cam. however a 1960 car magazines claimed 1960 4bbl dodge 383s got the .389 lift cam and only the police cars got the 430 cam. maybe that changed for 1960. d500 distributors should be of the dual breaker point type. pistons, compression, block, etc is all the same.

Elite Veteran Posts: 1102 Location: Hayward, Calif | The 59 Dodge FSM has no listing for a 383. It shows only the 325, 361, 230. Could this be a special order eng from the factory ? And if so did they install the DeSoto B short stroke 3.38 or the Chry RB 3.750 long stroke eng ? Chry only used this long stroke 383 for 2 yrs, 1959 & 1960, then discontinued it. I put one of these 383 RB eng's in a Dodge P/U. I thought it was a good eng. Jerry

The block casting numbers on my 383 indicate it started out to be a 361 According to Allpar, Dodge wanted a larger engine for 59, but the Chrysler line for 383 RB blocks was booked solid. Dodge decided to bore 361B blocks to 383. Edited by Ray 2014-09-28 2:35 PM

Expert 5K+ Posts: 7210 Location: Victoria, BC, on Vancouver Island, Canada | Thje RB 383 was only used in the 59-60 Chrysler, US production and never on Dodge, DeSoto or Plymouth. From allpar.com : The 383 cubic inch RB engine was only available in 1959-1960 on the US built Chrysler Windsor and Saratoga (thanks, Ian Smale and Bill Watson); one of Trenton Engine’s lines had been converted to the new RB engine (to make the 413), and demand for the 383 was too high for the remaining line. The solution was to create an RB 383 to fill the gap, until the plant figured out how to quickly switch from one block to the other. American-made Chrysler and Imperial cars used the RB blocks, with the 413 going into Imperial, New Yorker, 300E, and 300F. U.S. Chrysler/Imperial usage for those years was: Vehicle................................... Engine .... 1959 ....... 1960....... Total Chrysler Windsor / Saratoga RB - 383... 47,219... 52,349.... 99,568 Chrysler New Yorker / 300 RB - 413...17,025 ..... 20,602... 37,627 Imperial ................................. Expert Posts: 2120 Location: atlanta | I had a 60 Fury, a GC car, the pad said P38, supposedly the 383 wasn't available in Fury's in 60, the block casting wasn't for a 383, this may be a special order engine, someone told me the 383 60 DeSoto's had this same block, maybe an industrial 361 bored to 383.
