I was driving the daughter's Savoy home tonight when I noticed a car riding my bumper. He hung out there for a few minutes then pulled alongside (in a late model Mercedes 500 SL), then slipped back behind me, then beside me again.

We came up to a stop light side by side and he made a dramatic effort to get my attention. I rolled down my window and he said, "What is that thing!?!". I told him it was a 1961 Plymouth, he said, "I LOVE  the lines !" and sped off........so many sickos in this world .

I told my daughter what happened after I got home and she laughed her head off.

I am so familiar with my '59 Plymouth that when I find myself sitting in traffic with people looking my car over, I wonder what their problem is. "What the heck are they looking at?"

Well it a lot better looking than his Benz, and after owning 2, The Plymouth is a lot more reliable and a heck of a lot cheaper to fix.
I think I have spent a lot less on the 64 on the 43 years I have owned it, than I did I those 2 benzes, for example an oil leak is , or was, 6 years ago, $1500/ side and yep, both sides leaked, also had to budget a new starter every year, got rid of those freakin things, bought a Honda for my business and a 93 Allante for the wife, both , just like my Dodges, are Trouble free!!!!

Twice over some 20 years, I got pulled over by a cop, who, upon approaching the door, said "Sorry to give you a rush like that. I just had to get a better look at the car". That was all they wanted.

Once was in my green 58 Limited, and the other time was in my black and gold 56 Adventurer. The latter time the cop told me he had seen the car a number of times, but it was always going the opposite direction, etc. He said he was getting frustrated and lit 'em up to prevent "another escape". I told him about the NDC and he made a few of our shows.

It is funny how you get used to a car when you drive it all the time and then people react like you are piloting a steam locomotive down the street. How could he NOT like your 61 Plymouth ?

I like your analogy, Brent. Though rare, there was some street trackage used by steam and diesel locomotives.

Usually, the big interurban electrics shared city streets with automotive traffic at some point along their journey.

I wonder if a Humvee driver or even an Imperial owner would be willing to dispute the right of way with one of these fifty two ton puppies?

Once they reached their own right of way, hitting 80-90 mph was oftened part of keeping their schedules:

S-I-G-H-H!!! Did you see the price of gasolene at the station in the first picture Kenny J posted? 29.9 cents! Those were the days!! I'd say the picture was taken ca. 1962 when V-8s were the normal powerplants of the domestic cars everybody was driving in those days and if your car only got 13 mpg, who cared? As for foreign cars, well, there was the ubiqutous VW Beetle or the Renault Dauphine but you'd have to be pretty strange to WANT to drive a four cylinder car with a stick-shift!

Just imagine what it is like never having seen a 61 Plymouth and then finally seeing one up close! I can understand the guys reaction, I had similar reactions when I used to drive a 61 Plymouth years ago. When I drove to work every morning, there was this one guy who would drive next to me or slightly behind me for 10 miles, every morning! He would just stare at it!

I can remember hearing odd comments as well, like "what is that!?!" as I would drive by. And one time, I actually scared the crap out of a little kid who was sitting a few feet from where I pulled into a parking spot! He thought it was a monster coming to get him!

And how many of you have had that ****y buddy of yours riding in your car, ready to start a fight because someone was staring at him? Relax buddy they are just looking at the car!

Wes,the Big Brother censor HATES the contiguous letters c-o-c-k , in ANY format. I used them in mentioning an alcoholic mixed drink,
and it came out : " ****tail " Gimme a break!

Stephen: I would rather pay $3.00/gallon for gasoline, now, than try to come up with $0.30 for it, back in the 50's-60's.

It truly is mind boggling to consider how much it cost to operate a car in the 50's/60's, with short-lived EVERYTHING on-and-about
them; not least of which was their about 5-7 year service life!

A good hourly wage rate was $3.00 which would equate to about $5,760.00/year.

All things the same, and equating 10% lower purchasing power since then, a similarly good hourly wage would be around $30.00/hr,
to produce $57,600.00 in gross annual income.

But, for our $3-bux/gallon, we routinely drive cars that get over 20MPG, and which need very little maintenance, over their 15+ year
service lives.

So, YEAH: I don't like paying $3-bux/gallon (let's NOT mention European gas prices!!!) , but, I just say to myself, upon each fill-up:
"Your're just paying [the equilavent cost of] what they did pay for 50's gas , back IN those days !"

AND: remember when kids would POOL their money, to comeup with enough change, to be able to go out
"cruising-around" ?

Oh, comeon you guys, don't be hypocrates, they're just giving you the attention you all really want in those cars. (lol).

Gasolineprices ? I remember when living in the L.A. CA district back in the mid 60s, it was 27 cents a gallon for 98 octane leaded Super. My first job then was at a car wash, earning 95 cents an hour. Still, the gas feels more expensive today than it did then. But that's perhaps because I am living in Norway now.

Yep, 29.9 cents a gallon--those were the days. Of course back then, if you made $2.50 an hour you were doing right nicely--wife stayed home with your 2 or 3 kids; you could make payments on your GI home; and probably could swing the payments on last years model car. If you move both decimals points one place to the right, you will hit pretty darned close to where they same guy is today.
Except now you pay 7.65% of the first $94,000 for social security, and your employer gets to match that, instead of 3.6% of the first $4,800 you did back then. You got a deduction of $600 for each dependent, and the interest on your house, car loan was deductable, as well as your real estate tax, plus a lot more tings that are no longer deductible, which pretty well shielded your average american $5,000 annual income from the Feds. And who only has 1 car?
Gasoline has just recently caught up with what the politicians have done to the value of our money over the past 50 years.

I'll let you decide which part the bad word " thingy " censored out..

Neil (D500) is right. Cars and operating costs have never been lower than thay are today. We have the Japanese to thank for the low cost, inexpensive to operate cars of today.

Yes, I drive Japanese as my daily cars.

i absolutely adore the '61 plymouth. i think theyre just gorgeous. ive been looking for one for a while, but i've seen none here in australia, but i am certain that i will find one one day. i am only 19 so i have many more years to keep looking. my dad told me about how your daughter found hers and i almost cried, i am green with envy!! anyway for the mean time i will just drive my ap6 valiant until a '61 plymouth crosses my path. dont worry my dad and his mates always pay me out because they reakon that it is the ugliest car ever made by chrysler. but i disagree. if making your daughter drive a '61 plymouth is child abuse, then im all for it!! cheers and enjoy, adriana
