Member Posts: 35 | I have a later 318 magnum in my 61 and the pressure is off because the steering goes to the left side.. Is there a way to set the power steering pressure. Should I run a flow control to slow it down.

Expert Posts: 2312 Location: Arizona | If I understand the question correctly, the issue isn't "pressure" per se, but an unbalanced valve that's making the power steering box want to turn the car to the left with hands off the wheel. If that's what the problem is, first verify the problem is with the PS system and not a bad wheel alignment by jacking up the car so the front wheels are off the ground to verify the PS box is turning the wheels to the left when no one it touching the steering wheel (engine running of course). It it is turning left on it's own I think there is a simple procedure outlined in the repair manual for loosening a couple bolts on the outside of the PS box and shifting the housing for the shuttle valve to get it centered. I had a company 70 plymouth that did this and by the time the shop finished "fixing it" the car was unsafe to drive so they pulled it and gave me another one and sent the old one to auction. If you follow the manual you should not have that problem.

If everything else is ok such as alignment and tire pressure the centering adjustment is through the steering shaft and should only be done as the manual says. I agree with Jim (above) in not starting there but looking every where else first and completely ruling out pressure.

BTW, I wonder what effect those (alignment?) shims have, on the P/S gearbox's installation and operation.....onto the frame? Maybe Derek's got a problem with the gearbox's installation to the frame? Member Posts: 35 | I am thinking its pressure because I am using a pump from a 5.7 hemi with the separate reservoir. On the 318 magnum the truck and jeep power steering pumps did not clear the battery tray. The pump I am using is for a rack. I figured the rack and gear had different pressures. Everything lines up great on the car. The gear mounts to the frame in the factory spot tires are straight. I found a flow control valve a street rod friend told me about at speedway. I might have to give it a try. I will try to get an engine picture up soon. Thanks for the help. Can't wait to get it back on the road. It has been off the road since 1976.

I don't know for sure but I thought if it pulls to one side or another, ever so slightly loosen the bolts that hold the " valve" and tap it to one side or the other. Tighten it up in the neutral spot. Greg

Expert 5K+ Posts: 8445 Location: Perth Australia | The above is right Just be carefull adjusting it With my plymouth, someone had played with that adjustment and had it fully adjusted to left bias The engine didnt work and there were only remnants of the P/S hoses, so I fixed all that When I put the hoses on ect and started the car, the steering wheel spun very fast to the left and I couldnt pull it straight Once I worked out what was wrong, I found the little pivot arm thing inside the box was broken Not sure if this happened when I started the car or was already done, but wow that steering has some gunt if its wrong

Member Posts: 35 | Ok, I will try to adjust it by moving the valve. It was loose when I got the steering gear.

Expert Posts: 3802 Location: NorCal | If the steering box has the top-mounted control valve the adjustment procedure is outlined below. It's imperative that the wheels be unloaded during the procedure. I put a 5.7 l hemi in a 1974 challenger and plumbed a Heidt's adjustable power steering valve between the pump and gear box to solve this problem.

Regular Posts: 52 Location: nasco, falkoping | YOu mean, when your car is still steering Wheel starts to go left or right?( in your case it goes left) you can hear a sound from presurehousing. IF your steering Wheel go at left. loose your bolt to on housing and move forward just a Little bit. and move it upward if it goes to right. hope you understand.
