DV John’s affordable Hemi

Generally “Hemi” and “affordable” don’t go together in the same sentence but with a little luck and the right situation anybody can have the legend living in their car.

I’m building a Christine for John and while the car we are starting with has a genuine Fury block poly head engine in it he wanted something with a little more umph and “wow” factor so he chose one of the best for that.

What he found was an interesting ‘56 Chrysler New Yorker / Tractor with a 354 Hemi.
Now this was a bit of a gamble but this is where the luck came in. The car shows something in the 66K mile range and it was last tagged in the late 60's so there is a chance.

I got the engine running so I could do some checking on it. Compression is good ranging from 124 to 128 si between all 8 cylinders, Oil pressure when warm is 40+ PSI and there is zero smoke.
With these findings we have decided to get it whipped into shape and make it pretty as well as easy to deal with inside the ‘58 Plymouth engine bay.

Here is the first load of parts we have for it. Some I got local and some came from Hot Heads.

Now here is the list of parts on the next order from Hot Heads.

Tomorrow I pick up the MSD distributor.

All and all I think this will be interesting for Hemi enthusiasts to see and it will be cool to see how well this old “Tractor” engine wakes up this old ‘58.

I’ll post more when I have more.

Thats so cool! Lucky you. Are you going to paint it up in original colors? Can't wait to see it in a '58 Plymie. Marc.

So with all these brand new performance and upgrade parts, how affordable is it staying?

That doesn't look very affordable to me! heheheh

Sure does look pretty though! You would think Hemi parts would be cheaper. Especially since they leave big gaping holes in all the valve covers...

What are you gonna do for exaust? If manifolds put the engine in with the pass side manifold already on. I didn't and it's a real crowdpleaser getting to some of the bolts/studs, good luck with the heaterbox clearence to that distributer, I wanted a MSD but with the limited space fore and aft I went with the smaller MoPar one, The p/s box is a charmer also, good thing these engines mnt. on eccentric isolaters, you'll need 'em. Maybe the 354's shorter deck might give you more room than a '92 hood wise but it's going to be wider at a lower water line. It would be nice to see some under hood/car shots like service manual type pics of a 501 to see how the factory did it. Danny(57 Burb), do you have any? Speaking of affordable if you run a MoPar dist and sent the MSD back along with them fugly v/covers you could trade for some Donovans w/breathers like a real Hemi has

I don't have any D501 images, but Neil might.

As for valve covers, I had a pair of Imperial units that were chromed about a thousand years ago and have holes on the ends for breathers. Just neat old race car parts. Then my dad cleaned them up and detailed them, now they're priceless to me. I'm going to run those dinged up old jobs on my Chrysler, they are too cool not to.

Again, Adorable and Hemi may not always go together but this one will be on the lower end of Hemi money.

At the end of the day it's a Hemi......'nuff said.

Yea, Donovan Valve covers would be sweet but these are way cheaper. As for the MSD, We want it to run well so if I have to modify the heater box then so be it.
No problems with PS or PB because this doesn’t have either and as for exhaust I think we can get away with a set of shorty block huggers but I want it in the chassis before I give him the final verdict on that.

Eric @ HH has a 354 in his 57-58 Ply he used Sandersons, said it wasn't a problem, I couldnt tell if that was a remote filter adapter in the Mr Gasket pack but the upswept adapter from HH works, keep us posted.

Donnie, you copy/pasted the abbreviated HotHeads-links and therefore they don't work now here.

I'm not a fan of all that billet-stuff myself but I'm sure the valvecovers will sure look nice in that Plymouth. Although I personally would never put an orange engine in a bright red car. I probably would prefer to paint the engineblock and heads castiron-grey. A hemi in itself will be enough of an eyecatcher under that hood.

So just curious, how are you going to go about cleaning and prepping the block before painting? Are you going to tank it or what? Just curious as I'll be painting mine next summer and need to do something similar.

As I am getting ready to paint Kenny's DeSoto after assembly, I can tell you how I prep and what I will do.

I first of all had the engine hot-tanked (for a WEEK) since it was really sludged up.

This got most stuff off. Then the block got deburred of any casting flash (not much on this engine...very good casting).

It then got some carb cleaner and hand work to get anything the tank forgot to get.

The oil passages and drain holes got rifle-drilled out and will be gun brushed with wire brushes followed by cloths soaked in acetone.

The whole engine block will also get a final acetone wash down, followed by a wire brushing.

Then the engine gets a warm soap and water cleaning followed by a blow dry with air.

The inside of the engine block gets Glyptol paint to seal the surface and promote oil drainback.
The outside gets about 3 coats of high temp engine paint of Kenny's color choices.

Hope this procedure helps.

There are other ways to clean a block, but this is how I do it.

Since the short block isn't coming apart this one won't be getting hot tanked but that is my favorite way of doing one. Our goal here is to show that you don't have to go all out on a Hemi to have a really strong engine and it's still just as dependable when you find one that isn't worn out.

Of the links, we are still waiting on Lifters, push rods, tube boots for the plug wires, windage tray and I think that's it.

Pulled the old car / Tractor in and did some test fitting and such. I wanted to get a few things done before I pull the engine.
Looks funny to have all that new stuff on that old engine.

But, I now have the wires fitted and a ruff cut out of the coil mount I’ll use as well as making sure on the carb height.

My best friend is a guru at running custom fit plug wires and making them look neat. His pay for the night is in the glass beside him.

I might add he almost had a private moment in his pants when it occurred to him that this was his first Hemi wire.....Said he couldn’t remember the last time he got that excited putting something in a hole...

Your Pics inspired me to visit Hot Heads. Sweeet, indeed. Did the Plug Tube grommets come from HH? THey have a 426 style grommet but I like the ones you're using.

It appears he's doing the same thing I do...wheel cylender seals NAPA # 2937. 8mm wire fits tightly in them

No those came from Hot Heads and are made to fit down in the new valve covers. Got in a bunch more stuff for it but I've had some computer problems so I'm a little behind on pics.

I am on a goverment computer here, so all the images on Photobucket aren't showing up, but how much would a build like this run? I am getting a relapse of Forwardlook fever, and we'll see if I can cure it when I get back home in June!

It's a real shame. I'm really going to miss that old tractor. You should have restored it instead.
Just kidding. Looking good.

But it does vaguely remind me of a '56 Desoto that my parents owned that was mounted on a 2.5 ton military truck chassis.
