updating a '57 Dodge 2-door wagon

I have posted some pics under "Members rides" but thought maybe I should start a thread here as it is going to be considerably modified. I purchased an '06 Chrysler 300C at an insurance auction as a donor. So far I have installed the independent rearend, the 14" front disc brakes (on the '57 spindles), and just finished making the transmission and motor mounts for the Gen III hemi and 5-speed automatic. The trans crossmember was installed backwards, notched to clear, and reinforced. I was going to use Trans-Dapt motor mounts, but they have what I consider a design flaw - they need to both be offset 5/8" to the right in order to compensate for the block bolts being 1 1/4" farther back on the RH side. Since they refused to acknowledge the problem or make me a modified set, I just copied their design with the appropriate modification. The frame mounts are gusseted on the rear which doesn't show in the photo. I installed a MoPar rear-sump oil pan in order to clear the Chrysler 300 AWD power rack and pinion which is the next task. It will mount on a removable cradle to make engine removal easier as things will be rather tight down there. The stock Chrysler exhaust manifolds appear to line up nicely, pointing between the frame and torsion bars. I plan to use the Chrysler master cylinder assembly, complete with power adjustable brake and throttle positioning. I originally had planned to use the factory navigation and 6-CD player, but not sure if they will work without a computer tie-in.

It's a slow process as I work alone and am nearing 70, but being retired really helps.

1958 Imperial Tail Light Alternative

I found these tail lights on eBay for $20/pr. They are for a 1963 Ford Fairlane but they fit on my '58 Imperial perfectly.
It may be blasphemous to use a different manufacturer's part but...
the price and especially the availability is such a relief compared to the near impossible to find originals.

1955 custom royal converting to manual trans

This is my first post here, so bear with me. I have a 55 custom royal that I am converting to a manual 5-spd transmission with a hydraulic clutch. Any advice on what clutch pedal assembly to go with to add a third pedal? I ordered a set for a 68 camaro that doesn't seem like it will work out without a lot of modification. It doesn't quite wrap around the steering colum like it should. Any advice on what would work aside from just fabbing something up from scratch? Thanks

354/392 Hemi's in Plymouths/Dodges with 'usable' headers...

Anyone know if some company ever made proper fitting passenger car headers for those with Plymouth/Dodges with engine swapped 331/354/392 Hemi's?
Tried some Googling for it but came up dry.

Just tried to install a 392 Hemi in a '58 Plymouth with block hugger exhausts, but because of their straight down exits right near the oil pan, they end up hitting the torsion bar anchor and part of the lower control arms. Also the angle the exhaust tube has to make to clear the steering linkage is impossible, unless you run it under the linkage, where the tubes are very prone to being smashed up.
The current available shorty/hugger headers are lousy designed and only suitable for hotrods it seems.
Pretty much looks like starting from scratch and built your own set is the way go unfortunatly.

Variable speed wipers.

OK, so WAY back in the early 70's, I helped my dad put a variable speed wiper motor and switch in my 64 880. They never parked, just turned off anywhere.
Fast forward to last night. I was looking for the reason the reverse lights didn't work. I found that the wiper switch was not connected properly, and since the reverse lamps pick up power from the wiper switch side of the circuit breaker on the switch, I reconnected the wires correctly. Now I have reverse lights. And also the wipers park. In the UP position. Since the first arm on the motor isn't removable, how is this possible? Maybe the arm pivots are 180 out of position? The illustration in the service manual isn't very clear. Maybe someone had a late Exner car and can post a photo of how is is supposed to look?
Norm

A guy in Australia is adapting an LS intake to be used on a poly 318. I wonder if something like this could be done with a new hemi intake. Bore spacing is probably the biggest factor to take into account.

Anyone Fitted Functioning Lake Pipes?

I am considering this on a custom I'm building, but there is not clearly a good way to route the connection to the exhaust manifold. If you have ever fitted lake pipes on a FL or any other similar framed car I'd love to get some ideas on how you went about it?

Gear Reduction Starter

I installed Clifford headers on my 1961 Dodge Dart Pioneer wagon and needed a reduction starter to since the original direct drive starter would not fit. I ran a modified late model starter at first, but the shop that modified it said that the metal was machined pretty thin so I decided to look for a purpose-built unit. RobbMC makes starters for niche models and since he had a hemi starter I asked him about making a unit that would fit on my car. It took a while to work out the details but I put the starter in a couple of week sago and so far it starts like a charm every time. The cost was high - about $350 but I decided that if I avoided one tow I was ahead of the game.

New Car Rebody

I've been seeing more of these lately. I personally don't like them because the last thing I want to see is some new car interior in my old car, but I do appreciate the desire to get a better handling suspension on a '55-'56 car. Doing it to a '57-up car seems like a lot of effort for almost no benefit though. Welding the body to a unibody frame is just crazy, as you could accomplish the same thing by just replacing the frame, and the structural integrity of the end result would be very questionable.

One thing I have considered doing is to replace a '55-'56 frame with a '57-'59 frame. That would be an interesting upgrade that I might like. But I don't think I have ever seen someone do that. I know that the early frame is wider than the newer one from the firewall back, so that makes it a lot of work getting the mounts fitted in the right places.

The quest for more caster.

I have been updating the front suspension and brakes on my 1964 Dodge 880, same as Newport thru 63. I replaced the upper control arm bushings, and all 4 ball joints. I installed 1979 Cordoba spindles and disc brakes. The original specs call for very little caster even with power steering. Dialing in more caster leaves me with negative camber. Has anyone experimented with shorter strut rods to pull the lower ball joint forward a little and get more caster?
