| While on the hoist it appears the rear axle is a sure grip with a 4:10 ratio Looks like this old Sierra wagon had towing in mind. Only numbers I can detect are 1141644
Any ideas? I'm not a MOPAR expert. Thank You Kindly |

The axle ratio is stamped on the pinion gear carrier. Mine (56 Dodge V8 Custom Royal Powerflite) was 3.54. There was a 4.1 but typically that was for manual transmission cars with over drive. That said, 4.1 might have been available as an option for hilly country.

Location: So. Cal | A picture or two might help to identify. I say that because sure grip didn't come out until 1958, so whatever it is, it isn't stock. |

Location: Under the X in Texas | While "Sure Grip" as a marketing label was on the option list for 1958, the same unit was available from introduction about mid 1957 model year and simply known for what it is: a limited-slip differential. Several Imperials and Chryslers and a few DeSotos are known to have been ordered with the option.
But, granted, 1956 Mopar axles are different in construction and dimensions. I don't know of any Chrysler products with limited slip prior to 1957.
" Packard pioneered the LSD under the brand name "Twin Traction" in 1956, becoming one of the first manufacturers. " https://gaukmotors.co.uk/post/limited-slip-differential-lsd |

| Thank you to 60 Dart, Powerfllite, 56D500boy and all who replied. I was wrong and confused. Using photo above and holding one wheel as suggested, I have a 3.54 open rear end (so marked) so a 8 1/4 rear end. Again, thank you again I appreciate it. |
