We generally know that most of the 55 and 56 Canadian Dodges were "Plodges", i.e. Plymouths with the 115 inch wheel base but with Dodge front fenders and hood, etc. This is true for the 55 and 56 Dodge Regents and Mayfairs but not true for the Canadian Royals and Custom Royals. They ran on the 120" American Dodge wheel base and, with the exception of the engines, were much the same as the American 56 Dodges. The V8mengine for a 56 Canadian Custom Royal Dodge was a 303 cu in Polyspherical head. This engine was made in Canada and was similar to the 56 Plymouth V8s. The 303 was also used in the 56 Plymouth Furys (with some modifications).

In addition to these similarities and differences in equipment, the 56 Canadian Dodge cowl data tags were completely different than the 56 American Detroit and Los Angeles cowl data tags. The Canadian tags listed only four things: The model (which was very explicit), the number of the car as produced, the Paint Code and the Trim Code.

The Paint Code is fairly straight forward with two numbers siamesed together, as in 1025 where 10 = Jet Black, as used on the roof and any side sweep/Sport Tone and 25 = Cherry Red used on the rest of the body, for one example. To somewhat complicate interpretation of the Paint Code, the Paint code sheets are not always complete, e.g. they are often missing 10 = Jet black or higher numbers like 51 = Desert Rose (not shown on the chip charts for reasons unknown).

The Trim codes are more difficult to interpret. They seem to be all JXX, e.g. JAR, or JAO or JCA . Bill W. (Chyrcoman) has suggested that J = 1956 so that part is "easy". After that, it gets difficult because the dealer sample books that were used by the sales personnel (and customers) to help select the appropriate trims only use two numbers, no letters.

The following info is based on previously posted Paint and Trim code info. These are followed by four examples (two 56 Canadian Custom Royals and two 56 Dodge (Plodge) Regents. I have a third 56 Canadian Custom Royal in hand but I need confirmation of the interior colour before I can complete its compilation.

All of this is open to revision, as needed.

The paint code chart (missing 10 = Jet Black and the 5n series colours):

A listing of 55-58 Chrysler Canada (all divisions) paint codes as previously posted by soiouz (Dave ?) still missing the "10" for the 56 Dodge Black but listing colours for 50, 51, 52, and 53.

A larger version (still not very clear (Sorry)) of the 56 Canadian Chrysler Corp. colours:

As for the 56 Canadian Dodge Trim Codes, here is information that I have previously posted with the two digit codes:

56 Canadian Dodge Crusader (like the Plymouth Plazas):

56 Canadian Dodge Regents (like the Plymouth Savoys):

56 Canadian Dodge Mayfairs (like the Plymouth Belvederes):

56 Canadian Dodge Custom Royals (like the American Dodge Custom Royals - mostly):

Now for the examples (so far):

Do not understand:
There are two models – two Plodges wb 115’ and two really Dodges wb 120’;
And five series – Crusader, Regent and Mayfair – wb 115’ plus Royal and Custom Royal on 120 inches base rode…

Why the trim codes have not difference between the series?

60 = Blue
65 = Green
70 = Gray
80 = Rose Gray

They should have a difference…

Similar situation in the ’59 and ’60 Ford trim codes; they have same code numbers in independent series…

1960 FORD TRIM CODES FOR EXAMPLE ONLY:

Fairlane Sedans

31 = Nylon Faced Block Stripe Pattern Fabric and Ribbed Vinyl – Gray
32 = Nylon Faced Block Stripe Pattern Fabric and Ribbed Vinyl – Blue

Galaxie Sedans

32 = Nylon Faced Fabric and Vinyl – Blue
33 = Nylon Faced Fabric and Vinyl – Green
34 = Nylon Faced Fabric and Vinyl – Beige
36 = Nylon Faced Fabric and Vinyl – Black

The first "J" trim code letter probably means a model year: J = 1956, K, 1957 ets. as we know

K = 1957 not a "K, 1957"

And there you have it. The two digit codes come from the Dealer Paint and Fabric book. For reasons not known (at least not to me), those two digit codes did not translate on to the cowl data plates that used three alphabetical codes. J is a given (the 1956 year code letter), then you have 26 x 26 = 676 potential possibilities of which we only see a few in these four examples. JCA, JAO, JAF, and JAR.

And yes, the 115 in wheel base Dodges were Plodges *BUT* the 120 in wheel base Custom Royals are all American Dodges, well, except for the engine which was the Canadian built 303.

We need more 56 Canadian Dodge examples to help figure out the code pattern.

Maybe. Close but no cigar. The "A" works for the Canadian Custom Royals that I posted and the "C" works for the Regent sedan that I posted *BUT* your theory didn't work for the Canadian Regent two door hardtop (Special Coupe) which you thought would be "C" but it is "A" instead. (WHAAAATTT????)

Here's another crazy one: The 56 Canadian Custom Royal 4 dr sedan above that is wearing a coat of Flat Black primer (instead of its original Surf White and Desert Rose colours) has a "JAO" interior that is in greys. I have now confirmed that a different 56 Canadian 4dr Custom Royal sedan local to met also has a "JAO" interior *BUT* its interor is in blues, I have seen this one in person so I can confirm its JAO = blues. This makes me crazy because I think the other "JAO" car in greys is appropriate for the original Surf White and Desert Rose colours.

Something is wrong. I just don't know what.

Here is the latest one:

And something like this: from up to the down and from right to the left…

JAO = 70 = Royal and Custom Royal Sedan = Gray
JAP = 65 = Royal and Custom Royal Sedan = Green
JAQ = 60 = Royal and Custom Royal Sedan = Blue
JAR = 85 = Royal and Custom Royal Lancer Hardtops = Gray
JAS = 65 = Royal and Custom Royal Lancer Hardtops = Green
JAT = 60 = Royal and Custom Royal Lancer Hardtops = Blue

This is interesting. Now I see JA0 as in Jay A Zero, not Jay A Oh. The last letter/digit is like the 0 in the 3021 Paint Code, not the O in DOOR. Hmm....

Which is the same thing with the 1151 Paint code car. JAZero, not JAOh. But Greys, not Blues. Ouch my head hurts.

So, the digit 3 in lettering «D63 – 3 – 4 DOOR SEDAN» does not match to «3» to «3021»; «3» and «4» to «4331» as well…
I guess these are just different fonts…
Why they did it? Why in letter code introduce a digit? It complicates things. I think this is OH not ZERO…

Not hard, impossible, to see. If I see anything, it is J?H (??)

As for the turquoise and white Regent 2 dr Club (post, not hardtop) sedan with the Corvette motor (and not much else), the paint colours make sense 1121 = Surf White (11) and Turquoise (21). The trim code JAF implies greys which matches my guess for the Cherry Red and Black 1025 2 dr (Special coupe) hardtop which also has a JAF trim code but the interior has been redone in modern day velour. Since the 2dr sedan seats and the 2dr hardtop seats would be the same, I think JAF = Code 60 Regent greys for 2 dr cars. (I suspect the the Corvette Dodge interior was redone at some point in the past (before the engine transplant) because the cloth fabric does not match anything in my 56 Dodge/Desoto Paint and Trim dealer book).

I can't really see the cowl tag but I think this car started out as Regent 6 cyl 2dr hardtop with Surf White (11) roof and side sweep and Mediterranean Blue Metallic (18) body. I would guess this is a JAF (grays) interior Trim.

Now that I look at that Blue and White Plodge above again, I wonder why it didn't come with the Code 60 blue based interior? I haven't seen one yet so I have no idea what the three letter code for that would be J??
