I was working on my 58 Desoto, changing the differential oil when I noticed a plug at the bottom of my gas tank and wonder if it can be removed to drain the gas. The plug has a recessed six point star, so I guess it takes a special tool to remove it. Is it a plug?

Thanks,

Carl

Yes it is a drain plug. Same plug used in the 40s up until 59 I think? They can be very difficult to remove, use plenty of penetrating oil.
Also, you'll want to have a new rubber gasket (#1122361) handy or it will leak. You can buy them on ebay.

Used search function and found a 1/2 drive extention will remove the plug. Just need to find a gas resistant washer to seal it. Any source for these?

The 55-58 Parts Manual has one set of PNs for 1955-57 and another for 1958 (and maybe beyond):

1955-57 = 1122 359 for the plug and 1122 361 for the seal

For 1958 = 1739 194 for the plug and 1739 196 for the seal

This thread has some related info including a chart for gas-compatible rubber washers:

Anybody has some of those Viton washers for me (will pay for it), I don't want to order 100 pc + shipping + customs, - I need only one

Here is a picture of the plug, and the picture of the "SPECIAL" tool

Tom, I bought a small sheet locally and made my own washers. Got the tank sender gaskets tailormade too at a reasonable price
