61 Windsor, 383 with A-466 trans. Got a problem with my transmission on deceleration shortly before coming to a stop - at about 10mph. It feels like everything is out of balance, with clunks and rattles, but does not always do it see notes below.
Here's the back story. installed aftermarket aircon and dropped the drains into the trans tunnel. The day after the first drive, trans fluid and water mix on the garage floor - prob about a pint, but looked worse than it was. Appeared to be leaking from around pan gasket and neutral switch. Drained fluid from trans and torque converter - was milky. Installed new safety switch, cleaned up pan, new gasket, and refilled per service manual. 1st drive, no issues. 2nd drive, problem surfaced. checked fluid and added 1 pint. 3rd drive trying to replicate problem, no issue!! 4th drive came back again! Any of you transmission gurus have any thoughts?

On the left side of the transmission theres the throttle valve lever with a seal that in most cases are worn out - water will enter here for sure.
Then there's the cable for the pushbuttons, in most cases the outer plastic cover is dry cracked or missing near the transmission - water might enter here.

On the right side there should be no risk of water entering.

I'm thinking sprag clutch issues or ball & trunnion wear

How about intermix in the trans cooler in the radiator?

Just spitballing here but, in normal operation, when decelerating to a stop, the trans drops directly from 3rd to 1st. If a governor problem prevents the trans from dropping out of 3rd at low speed, the engine lugging could cause a shudder which would amplify an existing problem like loose u-joints, etc.

Again, just spitballin'.

If I understand the original post correctly, you installed an after market Air Conditioning unit and drilled thru the transmission tunnel to install your drains. Is there ANY possibility that you drilled into your transmission case?

No we didn't drill through to the transmission. it's not loosing fluid either.

This is exactly what I think is going on. Will a governor cause it to intermittently not shift back to 1st?

You might want to get the transmission over hauled.

Yes, but what about the water in the fluid?

Well the trans filler tube can be a culprit, especially using a pressure washer in the engine bay.

Yes, and a sticky 2-3 shift valve would do the same thing. Only way to know for sure is to plumb a gauge to the governor pressure test port at the rear of the transmission case and monitor the pressure while driving.

In the interim, you might try an additive like Trans-X to loosen up any sticky parts.
