Location: Lower Mainland BC | This is probably not news but I just wanted to confirm, if anything, that the 1956 Dodge gauges (or gages for the Yanks) are not painted that loverly shade of green but are likely anodized aluminum. I just bought a strange two gauge pod with a coolant temp gauge and fuel gauge and needed to dismantle it so I can develop it in to a tach and voltmeter pod attached to the steering column (at least that is the plan). As I took the two gauges out of the pod, I could see that they are made of aluminum and therefore I believe that the green is anodization not paint. That was popular back in the mid-50's with tall drinks glasses made of aluminum so I am not surprised that gauges would be anodized too. Probably came out of the aircraft industry after WW2 (I'm guessing)
