In order to remove and paint my 56 D500 valve covers, on the left side of the engine (the 1-3-5-7 bank), I had to remove (okay move) the generator/PS pump combo out of the way. In doing so, I had to disconnect the two wires on top of the generator. Somehow, I've managed to lose (drop somewhere), the nut for the bigger stud. Anybody know the size of the nut? Probably a machine screw thread, very fine threads. I didn't lose the smaller nut. 1 for 2.

On the upside, I found that there were two holes on the generator mounting bracket (which also came off and got painted) and when I re-installed the generator/PS this afternoon, I used the outer two holes which should help with air cleaner clearances.

I am thinking 1/4-28. If stud is 3/16" then 10-32. Some nuts are brass or copper.

Went out to find 1/4"-28 not even sure if it was 1/4". Bought a 1/4"-20 (all they had - lumber yard - not a House of Bolts) knowing it was probably going to fail. (It did - but the 1/4" was correct)

While I was contemplating my next move, I started putting the fan belts back on. I needed a light to see the crank pulley and during that episode, I saw a nut laying on the cross-member below the front of the engine. 2 minutes later with my magnetic extendable parts retriever, I pulled it up and put on the generator. DING.

Thanks for your help though. Much appreciated.

Next time when I pull the nuts off the generator to move the wires, I will put the nuts back on the studs so they won't go "walkabout" on me.
