Location: Hickory, NC | Yea that dude came to buy a car I was selling some years ago. He tried paying for half and have me sign the title over and give to him. Then he would "come back tomorrow with the rest of the money." When I said I needed the full amount before releasing the title he then asked why I didn't trust him. I said I didn't know him from Adam's house cat...and that he could leave a deposit and come back with the rest the next day. He then got really agitated and started raising his voice saying how he can't trust me with a deposit and basically trying to threaten me into signing the title and letting him leave with the title and come back with the rest of the cash tomorrow. I then told him to get off my property. He was very belligerent and I thought I might have to shoot someone if it got any worse...then he stormed off and I never heard from him again.

Location: NY & VT | That car was on CL about 2 yrs ago with pics. I had some interest as it's the same as my grandfather's car that got me interested in FL cars. I suppose if one showed up with cash and a trailer it might work out, otherwise... ?

Location: NY & VT | Who cares, possession is 9/10s of the law, I've bought many vintage cars w/o title, no big deal, here at least. |

Location: The Mile High City | I would say that title issue is state-by-state Roger. In Colorado, no title means big risk.
There are ways for people to get title to cars that have been in their possession, but they need to do that BEFORE they sell.
If you buy a car without a title here, there is always the risk that someone else out there actually holds a valid title to the car.
The rightful owner can come get it whenever they want, with a Sheriff at the ready.
If you buy a car without a title and do a full restoration on it - that could be a free restoration for the legal owner.

Location: So. Cal | You can register a car without a title here in CA without any trouble at all. You just need a good, signed sales receipt -----as long as it was purchased from someone within California. For out of state purchases, they require a title no matter what. I don't know why they do it that way. It doesn't make a lot of sense to me, but bureaucracy never was known to compliment reason much. |
